(Charles Doussault, Église de Saint-Georges à Bucarest in “L’Illustration”, nr. 566, 31 décembre 1853, p. 445 ; Călători străini, VI, p. 151). Charles Doussault (1814–1880), a French painter and illustrator, became known as an Orientalist painter following his voyages to the Ottoman Empire; he also paid special attention to Wallachia, which he visited during the first half of the 19th century. There, he becomes an integral part of society and is welcomed in the boyars’ homes and at the Court so much so that, in August 1843, he is invited by Prince Gheorghe Bibescu to be part of his delegation going to Constantinople to pay tribute to the sultan. -

The Development of Analytical Chemistry in Romania
THE DEVELOPMENT OF ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY IN ROMANIA GRIGORE POPA Department of Analytical Chemistry, University of Bucharest, Romania ABSTRACT A brief history is given of the development of analytical chemistry in Romania. Aspects concerning the teaching of analytical chemistry in Romanian univer- sities as well as the achievements of the scientific research in this field are presented. The earliest beginnings of analytical chemistry in the territory of our country can be traced back to identify themselves with those of chemistry itself. The more so as analytical chemistry is one of the branches of chemistry with the widest range of applications in all fields of economic life. Its theoretical character materializes in the study of the properties of materials in terms of concentration P =f(c)and the development of analytical methods, whereas the practical character resides in the analytical techniques themselves. In fact, the study of materials with a view to using them has been the concern of man since the earliest times, a concern that was manifest in this country, too. In the following I shall try to outline the major stages in the development of analytical chemistry and of its teaching in our country. Certain skills, such as the potters', the smiths' or metal workers' (with the Dacians), etc. requiring practical chemical knowledge have long been familiar to the country's inhabitants. But the lack of written documents would make it impossible in practice to state a precise date for the beginning of the development of chemistry in our country. In feudal times, with the exception of boroughs, a number of trades sprang into being, closely connected with the processing of material products, which helped develop chemistry to a certain extent. -

Ealth Legislation in the Romanian Principalities from Organic Regulations H Until 1874
JOURNAL of Humanities, Culture and Social Sciences, Vol. 1, No. 2, 2015 ISSN 2393 – 5960; ISSN – L 2393-5960, pp. 76-85 ealth legislation in the Romanian Principalities from Organic Regulations H until 1874 Elena Steluța Dinu, Ph.D. “Babeș- Bolyai” University of Cluj- Napoca, Romania, [email protected] Abstract From the third decade of the nineteenth century, with the application of the Organic Regulation (1831-1832) in the two Romanian principalities began a process of medicalization of the population. This process was coordinated by the state. From the medical point of view there were many problems to solve. Three of them were, however, priority: the disappearance of major epidemics, lowering morbidity and prolong life expectancy. The achievements materialized in the creation of health - administrative structures both in the counties and the cities, including Craiova. Key words: Organic Regulation, Trusteeship of Civil hospitals, Health Committee, Medical Commission, Superior Medical Council. 1.1 Organic Regulation The Organic Regulation (1831-1832) encodes and regulates for the first time in the Principalities the health and public hygiene service, thus representing the beginning of the health system. At the same time, The Organic Regulation has established the western pattern of the health organisation in the Principalities, the western pattern in general and the French one in particular (Trăuşan-Matu, 2011, p. 28). It was written by the councils of the Divans from the two Principalities, under the presidency of the Russian general consul M. L. Minciaki, for both Wallachia and Moldavia and it was enforced in Wallachia in 1831 under the government of the Russian general and Health legislation in the Romanian Principalities from ……| 77 diplomat Pavel Dimitrievici Kiseleff (1788-1872), the governor of the two Romanian Principalities during 1829-1831. -
Iordache Filipescu, the 'Last Great Boyar' of Wallachia and His Heritage
Iordache Filipescu, the ‘last great boyar’ of Wallachia and his heritage: a world of power, influence and goods1 NICOLETA ROMAN The ‘Nicolae Iorga’ Institute of History and New Europe College Bucharest Abstract The ‘‘Nicolae Iorga’’ Institute of History and New Europe College Bucharest This study explores the manner in which two competing empires, the Ottoman Empire and the Russian Empire, acted through material culture and diplomacy to strengthen their influence in a territory lying at the periphery of Europe. To this end, the distribution, rhetoric and reception of the awarding of decorations is analysed, starting from the case of the great Romanian boyar Iordache Filipescu. Wallachia, an Ottoman province under Russian protectorate, in what is today south-eastern Romania, was at a moment of transition on the political level. Attracting loyalties and creating local action networks became diplomatic strategies, and one way in which pro-Ottoman and pro-Russian groupings may be traced in the Romanian space is through the intermediary of decorations. They transpose at the public level merits and services rendered to one of the two powers, but it is necessary to trace at the individual and family level the extent to which loyalty won in this way continued to exist. The message that the decorations transmitted remained a deceptive one: their possession was not equivalent to a transfer of power towards the holder in comparison with his compatriots, just as it did not guarantee complete adherence to the cause of the issuing power.
