The available software for simulating virtual clothing can roughly be separated into two groups. The first group of software is focused on animation and used to visualize cloth for games, movies, commercials. The second group is used for the virtual prototyping of garments in the apparel industry. Their main focus is to check a garment for the fit, and the 3D software is an extension on patternmaking software that was already available. Various software applications are explored in this thesis. An overview of functionality and a comparison of pros and cons are identified. Software aimed at the apparel industry is not very flexible in accurately visualizing a garment and especially the fabric of that garment. Through the use of sophisticated fabric design, this thesis shows how to use existing visualization techniques available in Autodesk Maya 8.5 differently to enhance the realism of virtual fabric and garment simulation.     FABRIC DICTIONARY A Absorbency- The ability of a fabric to take in moisture. Acetate- A manufactured fiber formed by compound of cellulose, refined from cotton linters and/or wood pulp, and acedic acid that has been extruded through a spinneret and then hardened. Acrylic- A manufactured fiber, its major properties include a soft, wool-like hand, machine washable and dryable and excellent color retention. Alpaca- A natural hair fiber obtained from the Alpaca sheep, a domesticated member of the llama family. Angora- The hair of the Angora goat. Also known as Angora mohair. Angora may also apply to the fur of the Angora rabbit. Antique Satin-A reversible satin-weave fabric with satin floats on the technical face and surface slubs on the technical back created by using slub-filling yarns. It is usually used with the technical back as the right side for drapery fabrics and often made of a blend of fibers. Argyle- A pattern designed with different color diamond shapes knit into a fabric. B Bamboo Fabric- Bamboo fabric is a natural textile made from the pulp of the bamboo grass. Bamboo fabric has been growing in popularity because it has many unique properties and is more sustainable than most textile fibers. Bamboo fabric is light and strong, has excellent wicking properties, and is to some extent antibacterial. Barkcloth- A textured woven, usually printed cotton fabric that was popular in the 30s-40s and 50s as an interiors fabric. The prints were often large vines, leaves and florals. Basket Weave- A distinctive technique of weaving that creates a fabric resembling basket work with interwoven fibers.

    -A- ABRASION RESISTANCE The degree to which a textile can withstand changes to its appearance though rubbing, chafing, or other surface wear. Measured by the Martindale and Wyzenbeek tests. ACETATE A manufactured fiber formed by a cellulose compound composed of cotton linters and/or wood pulp that has been extruded through a spinneret and hardened. ACRYLIC A soft, wool-like manufactured fiber that is machine washable and dryable and has excellent color retention. ACRYLIC BACKING A finish, applied to the back of the fabric, which increases abrasion resistance. Range from light, SA-1 to heavy, LR3. ALPACA An animal-based natural fiber, specifically from the llama, used mostly for dresses and apparel. ANGORA The hair of the Angora goat or rabbit, also known as Angora Mohair. ANTI-BACTERIAL (ANTI-MICROBIAL) Resistant to, or inhibiting the growth of bacterial organisms. Can refer to a chemically treated fabric or a fiber created by incorporating the anti-bacterial chemical into the fiber formula. ANTI-STATIC Resistance (either natural or acquired through a finishing process) to the accumulation of an electric charge. APPLIQUE Material that is cut from its source and then sewn, embroidered, or fastened to a fabric. ANTIQUE SATIN A sateen or horizontal satin drapery fabric with horizontal (weft) slubs which imitate spun shantung silk. Most fabrics are one color from a selection of many. Occasionally the warp and weft yarns are dyed different colors to give an iridescent effect. Antique satin may also be printed. Generally used for drapery, but can also be quilted for bedding. -B- BACKING A polymer or resin treatment applied to the back of a fabric to provide enhanced performance characteristics, including stability, seam integrity, reduced fraying and curling, and better physical performance.

Silky textured fabrics have a smooth, lustrous surface often referred to as satin fabric. The term satin is the name of a weave. The sheen of the fabric comes from yarns that float over several yarns before interlacing with another yarn. These floating yarns reflect light and produce a shiny surface. Fibers used in a satin weave include rayon, polyester, acetate and silk. Some fabric names include crepe de chine, crepe-backed satin, sateen, shantung, antique satin and charmeuse. Patterns Because these fabrics are selected for their beauty and not durability, prom dresses, formals, wedding dresses, jackets and blouses are patterns most often used. Preshrink Check the end bolt of the fabric for care requirements. Some fabrics may be washable, while others may need to be dry cleaned.
