7.1.6 Quality Audits on Environment and Energy BEYOND THE CAMPUS ENVIRONMENTAL PROMOTIONAL ACTIVITIES 2017-18 100 PONDS PROJECT (18/03/2018) College NSS unit was an active partner in the project for the rejuvenation of the Ponds in Ernakulam which was initiated by the District Administration with the support of Cochin Shipyard Limited. The maintenance of ponds is essential to retain the ecological balance. On March 18 the volunteers cleaned the pond near the Durbar Hall ground and the activities were led by the District Collector. Pond cleaning under 100 Ponds Project GREEN THEVARA- SURVEY (22/03/2018) NSS Unit in association with Kerala Urban Transport Corporation (KURTC) surveyed the results of the green initiatives launched earlier in the year. The joint effort monitored the growth a saplings and issued more saplings. It is heartening to note that 90% of the saplings planted are surviving. Green Thevara- Survey BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATOIN RALLY (06/01/2018) The Department of Zoology conducted their annual Fest ‘Genysys 2k18’ by the name ‘Biomyriad’ from 4th to 6th January 2018. The fest which centred on the theme “Biodiversity” witnessed the participation of 12 colleges. A Biodiversity Conservation Rally was coordinated from Thevara Junction to the College. Biomyriad was inaugurated by Dr. Joe Kizhakoodan, Princpal Scientist, CMFRI, Chennai. A talk on ‘Understanding Lobsters’ was the prime session of the Fest. Intercollegiate competitions including quiz, debate, power point presentation, poster designing, treasure hunt, photography, face painting were the highlights of the fest. The residents of the Govt. old age home, Thevara were special invitees. Biodiversity Conservation Rally ENERGY CONSERVATION RALLY AND AWARENESS SEMINAR (14/12/2017) As part of observing the National Energy Conservation Day on December 18, the Physics Association conducted an Energy Conservation Rally. The Rally, in association with the NCC naval wing cadets, was flagged off by Boban Nedumparambil, Vice-Chair-person, Maradu Muncipality. Principal Fr. Prasant Palackappilil, Mr. Boban and Lt.Cdr.Dr.Sibi Mathew spoke. A street play was staged by NCC cadets, highlighting the relevance of energy conservation. SHANTHINAGAR BEAUTIFICATION (02/12/2017) The NSS volunteers had a cleaning and planting programme at Shantinagar area at Thevara to transform the place to a beautiful garden. After cleaning and clearing the area of waste, the volunteers planted trees and flowering plants. The landscape was curated suiting the topography so that the place would become an attractive garden from a waste dumping area. The initiative was undertaken as part of the SWATCH BHARATH MISSION Shanthinagar beautification ORGANIC RICE CULTIVATION (06/01/2018) NSS volunteers participated in the paddy cultivation activities at Arayankavu at the farm land owned by the college. Principal of the college and farmers from nearby places guided the volunteers to do the farming. The volunteers had undertaken the entire gamut of activities associated with paddy farming at different plots right from the preparation of field, planting, plucking out weeds etc. Organic Rice cultivation at Aryankavu RALLY ON NATIONAL ENERGY CONSERVATION DAY (14/11/2017) As part of observing the National Energy Conservation Day on December 18, the Physics Association conducted an Energy Conservation Rally in association with the NCC naval wing cadets. Rally was flagged off by Ms. Sunila Siby, Chairman, Maradu Municipality PLASTIC FREE THEVARA CAMPAIGN (14/10/2017) As a part of PLASTIC FREE THEVARA MISSION NSS unit along with the “Vyapari Vyavasaya Ekopana Samathi”,and ”Janamaithri Police” hosted a programme for eradicating the plastic carry bags from 8 divisions of Kochi Corporation which include Thevara, Perumanoor, Konthuruthi, Ravipuram, Kadavanthra, Panampalli Nagar,Island,South Ernakulam divisions.The programme was flagged off by Kochi Mayor Smt. Soumani Jain, Rev Fr. Prasanth Palakkappillil ,Councilors and other Dignitaries. The programme commenced with a rally from Thevara junction which was concluded by a flash mob that highlights the message to eradicate plastic carry bags. Plastic free pledge was taken by the volunteers, public and the dignitaries during the occasion. Plastic Free Thevara campaign THEVARA CANAL CLEANING (26/09/2017) NSS volunteers in association with Cochin Shipyard Limited conducted “THEVARA CLEANING DRIVE“on September26, 2017 as part of the SWATCH BHARATH MISSIONby cleaning the Thevara Canal.The programme was inaugurated by the authorities of Cochin Shipyard Limited in the presence of Principal of Sacred Heart College Rev. Fr. Prasanth Palakkappillil. It was a massive effort jointly completed by the NSS volunteers and the employees of Cochin Shipyard Limited. CLEANING DRIVE AT ERNAKULAM SOUTH RAILWAY STATION (22/09/2017) As part of the SWATCH BHARATH MISSION, a cleaning drive was conducted on Sept 25,2017 at South Railway Station, Ernakulam in association with the employees of Railways. The cleaning drive was led by the Principal of the college and top official of the Railways. Volunteers also cleaned the surroundings of the station and declared it as plastic free and initiated gardening activities in the area. SWACHHTA PAKHWADA- AWARENESS RALLY (15/08/2017) Themed on promoting a clean environment, an awareness rally was conducted by on Independence Day – “Our Dream Kochi – a Clean Kochi” SWACHHTA PAKHWADA- SANTINAGAR CLEANING (11/08/2017) NSS Volunteers cleaned the area near Shantinagar junction and commenced the work for building an attractive park over there with the support of Cochin Corporation. SWACHHTA PAKHWADA- KURTC BUS STAND – GREEN HUB (09/08/2017) NSS volunteers cleaned KURTC Bus Stand area (a public transport area) and planted 25 saplings all over the area as the second phase of the Green hub initiative. The volunteers also maintained the earlier planted saplings. Cleaning and Planting Trees at KURTC Bus Station SWACHHTA PAKHWADA- AWARENESS CAMPAIGN (06/08/2017) NSS volunteers Thevaracolony area and conducted door to door awareness campaign to make the local citizens awareof the need for a clean environment and sensitized people against open defecation. Kudumbasree workers of the Thevara residential area joined the NSS Volunteers during the campaign. Volunteers also shared information on decomposing organic waste material using techniques such as pot composting, bio- digester pot, ring compost etc. FORT KOCHI BEACH CLEANING (29/07/2017) NSS volunteers of SACRED HEART COLLEGE did an excellent team work to clean the Fort Kochi beach from the menace of waste and making it attractive for the tourists.With this initiative the NSS unit has become part of the Clean Kochi programme. AWARENESS CAMPAIGN FOR THE PROTECTION OF MANGALAVANAM (23/07/2017) Mangalavanam is an ecologically sensitive area situated at Kochi city.Covering about 2.74 hectares it is considered as the Green Lung of Kochi, which is home to large variety of migratory birds . As a massive protest against deforestation in the Mangalavanam premises, the NSS unit of SH College joined the protection campaign and tied green ribbon over the trees conveying the message that the tree are protected and no one can cut it off. This campaign was inspired from the Chipko movement of 1970s. .
