Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisations – an introduction

The Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisations, founded by

Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba in the year 1965, is a service organisation with a spiritual core and base to benefit all mankind irrespective of religion, caste, creed or sect. The Organisation serves as a platform for its members to undertake service and other activities motivated by an urge for one's own transformation with the aim of realising one's inherent divinity. Without any distinction of religion, nationality, race, socio- economic status, either for those who work in the Organisation or for those who are served by it, the Organisation transcends all barriers leading humanity towards the ideal of 'Fatherhood of God and Brotherhood of Man'. The concept of fees or membership subscription is alien to the Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisations, for there cannot be any fee or subscription for one's journey towards his own self. The organisation functions through its primary units called as Samithis and Bhajan Mandalis of which individuals - from different strata of society, different ethnic groups pursuing different religions and faiths -are members bound by the dictum of “Love all, Serve All” and pursue their own sadhana towards self-transformation following the path of selfless service to humanity. At no point is an individual asked to follow a certain religion or rituals. On the contrary each is inspired to follow his own faith so as to ensure that a Hindu becomes a better Hindu, a Muslim becomes a better Muslim, a Christian becomes a better Christian and so on. In fact, this spiritual basis inspires everyone to pursue his own religion better by putting into practice Love and Selflessness. That is why the Organisation features in its emblem the symbols of the major religions of the world.

“The Organisations named after Me are not to be used for publicising My Name, or creating a new cult around My worship….They must render seva (service) to the helpless, the sick, the distressed, the illiterate and the needy. Their seva (selfless service) should not be exhibitionistic; it must seek no reward, not even gratitude or thanks from the recipients. Seva is sadhana (spiritual exercise), not a pastime of the rich and well placed. You must have the firm belief that the aim of this Organisation is to remove the obstacles that keep man away from God, that separate maanavathwa (Humanity) from Maadhavathwa (Divinity).. This Organisation must elevate the human into the Divine.” Sri Sathya Sai Baba

WINGS OF THE ORGANISATION Spirituality and Service are supplementary and The Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisation complementary to each other. Spirituality is the functions under three wings viz. Divine Visit Bhagawan visited Ernakulam in 1967. Swami stayed at the house of Sri. V Balakrishna Eradi who was a govt. pleader at . Bhagawan had a meeting for devotees from all over Kerala and issued clear guidelines for the activities to be undertaken by them to follow the Sathya Sai path. Bhagawan visited Tripunithura after this with Prof.Kasthuri. Swami stayed at Tripunithura for two days at the house of a devotee Mr. Elias whose wife was a member of a leading Christian family (Pattasseril, Tripunithura). Bhagawan addressed the devotees assembled at the neighboring school ground standing on the balcony of the house on that Christmas day. The divine biographer Sri.N. Kasthuri narrates this discourse comparing to the “GIRIPRABHASHANAM” of Jesus Christ. During this visit, Bhagawan laid foundation stone for the Women’s/Children Ward at Govt. Hospital Tripunithura. Sri. B. Wellington who was the Health minister of Kerala also attended this function. It is to be noted that Sri. B Wellington, who was a hard core communist and a known atheist, became an ardent devotee of Baba from that day onwards and became very close to Swami. Bhagawan laid foundation stone for a Samithi Mandiram at Tripunithura. The construction work of that Mandiram was executed by a North Indian contractor from Puttaparthi under the instruction of Baba. Miniature forms of many art works seen at Prasanthi Nilayam including the "Sarvadharma sthoopam" were seen in this Mandiram. Prof.Kasthuri described this Visit as a Devine Drama of Swamy to keep up his promise to Kasthuriji that" He will take Kasthuri to his place as a King on his birthday (December 25th)". During the next year, 1968, Bhagawan again visited Ernakulam and by then Mr. Balakrishna Eradi was elevated as a Judge of Kerala High Court. Swami stayed at his residence. Bhagawan was given a public reception at next to Ernakulam Siva Temple where Swamy addressed the devotees.

During this visit also Bhagawan visited Tripunithura and the Samithi Mandiram was inaugurated by Bhagawan. This Mandiram was active for some years and later the Samithi activities were shifted from there for the reasons best known to Bhagawan. Elderly devotees still cherish those golden moments in their memory.

A collection of those Golden Moments in pictures are below

SAI CENTERS SSSSO Ernakulam is blessed with a “Sai Center” which is located in the town, Aluva. Operationally Sai Center is acting as the district headquarters of the Sai Activities in Ernakulam District. This is a 3 storied building which has all the facilities to accommodate medium scale events up to 500 in head count. Sai Center is located near to the Civil station on the Bank Road. It is only walkable distance from this location to the Aluva Railway Station and private/state bus stands. Most of the district level activities are being operated from this building which is under the ownership of the Sri Sathya Sai Publication Society, which also owns and manages a school, Sri Sai Vidya Vihar at Thiruvaloor - Aluva, an institution which has CBSE curriculum up to higher secondary level. Sri Sai Vidya Vihar is one of the better rated institutions under CBSE, delivers excellent academics and also focuses on Value Based Education which is the most important factor advised by Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba in the field of character building for new generation.

Being geographically located almost at the middle of Kerala State, and also being easily accessible from Railway Station and Bus Stands, Aluva Sai center is fortunate enough to host various State Level Sai activities and meetings.

In the recent Floods witnessed by Kerala, the Sai Center was effectively utilized to co-ordinate the material collection and management of flood relief activities from all the Sai Centers/Samithies across Kerala and also from other States as well. There were co-coordinators even from other states coming and staying at Sai Center to help the flood relief activities during that season.

Sai Center is also acting as a Primary Health care center, under SSSPHC scheme. Every Sunday The Sai Youth of Ernakulam District is actively conducting this PH Center, which is run by the District Organization. This PH Center caters various levels of medical consultations as well as medicines to the needy, with the modern day technologies involved. All services including Lab Tests as well as medicines in this PH center are absolutely free of cost.

Apart from this, Sai Center is also a place of worship for its other below mentioned aspects as well. One of the Saffron Robes used by Bhagawan is maintained here. Swami's Divine Idol and "Paduka" are also installed in Sai Center. So keeping the sanctity of the premises as a temple, every morning pooja is offered to Bhagawan in the early hours. Around 20 blessed families, on a routine basis has taken up the responsibility performing morning rituals. Both husband and wife perform the pooja together. Cleaning the Dias,Omkaram Suprabhatam, Veda Japam, Ashtotharam Archana and Arathi are part of the daily activities.

One more property which recently came to Sathya Sai Central Trust comes under the geography of SSSSOErnakulam. A two storied building of approximately 3000 sq ft area, located at Pooppani Perumbavoor. This building was earlier functioning as Sai Bala Bhavan which was accommodating around 20 orphan children under the total adoption scheme. Mr. Bhanusankar who was the convener of

Perumbavoor Samithi was the man behind this mission. Mr. Bhanushankar (who merged with Bhagawan recently) & Family dedicated this property at the Lotus Feet.

Various locations were identified and medical camps were being conducted joining the hands with the Sai Samithi located in that area with the local support. The Ambulance used to carry the necessary medicines to the camp locations which used to happen every 2nd and 4th Sundays.
