And, to my father, who left me with a quote I kept on my desk in New College: “Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.” ii Abstract The history of scholarship on John 21 is characterized by a routine set of general conclusions about its relationship to the rest of John. The following thesis begins with a survey of these longstanding historical and interpretive frames to demonstrate that historical, literary, and related standard methods of analysis still have difficulty in producing anything more than provisional explanations for its presence at the end of John. This is in part due to the relative lack of space in academic work given to John 21 in comparison to other areas of John’s gospel. It is also, though, in greater measure due to the elusive nature of this text. More recent research on the Gospel of John using enhanced literary and historical methods to locate the gospel’s most unique features in its initial literary environment have proven effective in reconceiving basic questions about its provenance and early readership. This thesis works in these innovative critical spaces to reassess the nature and composition of John 21. Following a survey of scholarship on John 21 and a close reading of the text, taking its cues from many of the issues raised by its history of interpretation, are four case studies treating specific literary features of the chapter in turn. The first case study assesses the function of the anonymity of the Beloved Disciple with specific reference to its historical context and contemporary debate on Johannine authorship. The second explores self-awareness in John 21 as part of a key, broader authorial strategy in the gospel. The third explores the shift in narrative time from John 1-20 and John 21 as the core emphasis of the chapter. The fourth probes the reference to “books” in the final verses as related to the emerging culture of book technology, lending chapter its unique position in the composition history of the gospel. CARSON TRINITY EVANGELICAL DIVINITY SCHOOL, DEERFIELD, IL 60015 O SPEAK of the current source criticism of the fourth gospel is to raise T questions in three interrelated but distinguishable areas: first, the relation between the fourth gospel and the synoptics; second, recent developmental theories concerning the construction of the fourth gospel, theories which postulate several layers of tradition developing as a process under the hands of a number of writers, from (perhaps) an apostle through an evangelist to final redactor(s); and third, recent attempts to identify and isolate concrete literary sources. The method followed in this paper is: (1) to comment briefly on these three areas; (2) to survey rapidly the most important literary source theories; (3) to concentrate critical attention on the literary source theory of Fortna and his followers; and (4) to conclude with a gentle plea for probing agnosticism in this matter. I If the fourth gospel were demonstrably dependent in a literary way on one or more of the synoptic gospels, that would quite clearly be the place to start in any search for literary sources. A few scholars believe that John depends on Mark, Luke, or both; 1 but those who hold this position are forced to admit that John has treated these sources in such a way as to make their retrieval impossible if we did not already possess them. More commonly, scholars follow the line of P. Gardner-Smith 2 and deny any direct dependence of the fourth gospel on the synoptics; or, alternatively, they take a middle road and suggest that the fourth evangelist leans on pre-Markan and/or pre-Lucan 'E.g.

    The earliest Jesus group in Jerusalem1 Andries van Aarde (University of Pretoria) ABSTRACT The earliest Jesus group in Jerusalem Church formation in the history of early Christianity emanated from the kerygma about Jesus after his death. The kerygma was based on memories of Jesus which were used in the Christian cult as both explanation and apology for the encountering of God through the traditions about the crucified, buried, resurrected, and ascended Jesus. The aim of the article is to argue that the term “the Twelve” served as a self-reference of the earliest Jesus group in Jerusalem. They regarded themselves as “apostles” and “prophets” of the “new Israel”, analogous to the twelve patriarchs in the Hebrew Scriptures. Reconstructing a trail from Jesus to the earliest group in Jerusalem to Paul, the article demonstrates a fundamental difference between Paul and the Jerusalem group. They understood the notion of “the Twelve” as exchangeable for “all of Israel”, represented by “all the apostles”. For Paul the concept “apostles” is an expansion of “the Twelve” in Jerusalem. 1 INTRODUCTION Despite his centrality in Christian theology Jesus should not be seen as the founder of Christianity.     329 THEOLOGICAL TRENDS Some recent trends in the study of John N A LECTURE AT THE BRITISH New Testament Conference, held at Bristol I in September 1989, Mark Stibbe drew attention to several monographs and a healthy list of articles in academic journals, but was able to point to only four major books on the Fourth Gospel which have appeared in the past decade. I Moreover, out of these four works, the two which stand in the great tradition of massive scholarship are judged in each case to mark the end of an era rather than the opening of a new way forward. But we should not for this reason jump to the conclusion that Johannine study has reached its limit, as if there were nothing new to say on the subject. Promising lines are being laid down for the future. The last ten years have produced the groundwork for what may well prove to be a great synthesis in the next decade. It is certain that John will emerge with enhanced authority as a profound interpreter of the primitive Christian tradition, as I hope the following pages will show. Commentaries One of the four major works is the commentary of E. Haenchen, published posthumously in Germany in 1980, and in an English trans- lation in the Hermeneia series in 1984. Though, as an unfinished work, it has many gaps and the treatment of the Gospel is inevitably uneven, it is notable for the attention given to theological issues in John. R. Kysar in a review article praises it for the theological force of the exposition of the Gospel and for the recognition of the 'dynamism of tradition' which lies behind it.

The resurrection of Jesus is assumed by the New Testament to be a historical event. Some scholars argue, however, that there was no empty tomb, but that the New Testament accounts are midrashic or mythological stories about Jesus. In this article extra-canonical writings are investigated to find out what light it may throw on intra- canonical tradition. Many extra-canonical texts seemingly have no knowledge of the passion and resurrection, and such traditions may be earlier than the intra-canonical traditions. Was the resurrection a later invention? Are intra-canonical texts developments of extra- canonical tradition, or vice versa? This article demonstrates that extra-canonical texts do not materially alter the landscape of enquiry. 1 THE QUESTION OF SOURCES Jesus’ resurrection is central to New Testament tradition, both as historical event and as theological metaphor. There are two main strands of early tradition: appearance stories and stories about the empty tomb. The earliest witness is Paul, who uses the appearance- traditions and makes nothing of the tomb apart from a passing reference (1 Cor. 15:4). Empty tomb stories enter New Testament writings later through Mark and develop through the Gospel traditions. The question is whether the New Testament is the only or best source of material about the resurrection. Some early Christian writings were chronologically close to later canonical writings. The First Letter of Clement dates from c96 (Staniforth 1987:20), and the Didache could have begun late in the first century (Kleist 1948:5).
