Haney Department of Humanities, Classics, and Comparative Literature Master of Arts New Testament text critics are fueled by a search for origins. But in the absence of an autograph, questions of origins are complicated at best. The fruit of that search for origins has resulted in the creation of hypothetical, eclectic texts—texts which have left us translating and interpreting the Bible in a form that no community in human history has before. Far from being failed projects, however, these eclectic versions aptly represent the problem of the One and the many, a problem not easily solved: When faced with hermeneutic duties, can we effectively speak of New Testament texts without speaking of their thousands of various and actual instantiations in the world? The answer, of course, is both yes and no; but the timid no has typically taken a back seat to the boisterous yes. This thesis develops a new literary historical hermeneutic based on the Categories of C. S. Peirce, a philosophical approach that will demonstrate the need for both an ideal (the yes) and a concrete (the no) approach to New Testament criticism. After this need has been demonstrated, the Gospel of John will then be under examination, both in its ideal and in one of its more concrete forms: P66, a second century Greek papyrus manuscript of the Gospel. But in the absence of an autograph, questions of origins are complicated at best. The end result of this search—which search manifests itself most patently in the task of collating thousands of manuscripts and fragments, comparing their unique readings, and selecting, according to text critical assumptions, the most likely original readings—is the creation of an eclectic text of the New Testament upon which more detailed philological and narrative analyses, as well as modern translations, are then based. That critical endeavor raises the question: When faced with hermeneutic duties, especially those phenomenological and historical in nature, can we effectively speak of New Testament texts without speaking of their various and actual instantiations in the world? To quote Bruce Metzger on the problem: Most commentaries on the Bible seek to explain the meaning of words, phrases, and ideas of the scriptural text in their nearer and wider context; a textual commentary, however, is concerned with the prior question, What is the original text of the passage? That such a question must be asked—and answered!—before one explains the meaning of the text [and, I would add, before one can begin to reconstruct possible sources for a text or to inductively reconstruct possible communities around which that text was 1 The purpose of the coloration and triadic nature of the title will be made clear through the course of the project. CARSON TRINITY EVANGELICAL DIVINITY SCHOOL, DEERFIELD, IL 60015 O SPEAK of the current source criticism of the fourth gospel is to raise T questions in three interrelated but distinguishable areas: first, the relation between the fourth gospel and the synoptics; second, recent developmental theories concerning the construction of the fourth gospel, theories which postulate several layers of tradition developing as a process under the hands of a number of writers, from (perhaps) an apostle through an evangelist to final redactor(s); and third, recent attempts to identify and isolate concrete literary sources. The method followed in this paper is: (1) to comment briefly on these three areas; (2) to survey rapidly the most important literary source theories; (3) to concentrate critical attention on the literary source theory of Fortna and his followers; and (4) to conclude with a gentle plea for probing agnosticism in this matter. I If the fourth gospel were demonstrably dependent in a literary way on one or more of the synoptic gospels, that would quite clearly be the place to start in any search for literary sources. A few scholars believe that John depends on Mark, Luke, or both; 1 but those who hold this position are forced to admit that John has treated these sources in such a way as to make their retrieval impossible if we did not already possess them. More commonly, scholars follow the line of P. Gardner-Smith 2 and deny any direct dependence of the fourth gospel on the synoptics; or, alternatively, they take a middle road and suggest that the fourth evangelist leans on pre-Markan and/or pre-Lucan 'E.g.

    The earliest Jesus group in Jerusalem1 Andries van Aarde (University of Pretoria) ABSTRACT The earliest Jesus group in Jerusalem Church formation in the history of early Christianity emanated from the kerygma about Jesus after his death. The kerygma was based on memories of Jesus which were used in the Christian cult as both explanation and apology for the encountering of God through the traditions about the crucified, buried, resurrected, and ascended Jesus. The aim of the article is to argue that the term “the Twelve” served as a self-reference of the earliest Jesus group in Jerusalem. They regarded themselves as “apostles” and “prophets” of the “new Israel”, analogous to the twelve patriarchs in the Hebrew Scriptures. Reconstructing a trail from Jesus to the earliest group in Jerusalem to Paul, the article demonstrates a fundamental difference between Paul and the Jerusalem group. They understood the notion of “the Twelve” as exchangeable for “all of Israel”, represented by “all the apostles”. For Paul the concept “apostles” is an expansion of “the Twelve” in Jerusalem. 1 INTRODUCTION Despite his centrality in Christian theology Jesus should not be seen as the founder of Christianity. After appearing in Switzerland and Germany, the exhibition comes to the Grolier Club of New York, the show's only American venue, from February 21 through April 28. Aptly titled "A Mirror of the World,'' this exhibition of the Bibliotheca Bodmeriana has been organized in conjunction with the Department of the President of the City of Zürich and the German Literature Archive in Marbach, and curated by Professor Martin Bircher of the Martin Bodmer Foundation. Financial support of the exhibit is being provided by Swiss Re, one of the world's leading reinsurance companies, which is based in Zürich, but has more than 70 offices around the globe, including significant operations in New York. "The Bodmer collection is a treasure, unique in its scope, ageless in its appeal, and borderless in its contents," said Andreas Beerli, head of Swiss Re's Americas division and a member of the company's Executive Board. "As a global firm committed to sharing of information and knowledge, Swiss Re is pleased to sponsor the Bodmer collection tour." Extraordinary books and manuscripts will be on view including manuscript treasures, such as early handwritten texts of Homer, medieval illuminated books of the Bible, a 15th century version of the Nibelungenlied, a copy of the Japanese Tale of Genji illustrated with more than 250 miniatures, a manuscript of Grimm's Fairy Tales, an important set of corrected proofs for Proust's Du côté de chez Swann, and a selection of music manuscripts from the hands of Beethoven, Mozart and Scarlatti.
