Proc Soc Antiq Scot 144 (2014), PICTISH169–204 SYMBOL STONES AND EARLY CROSS-SLABS FROM ORKNEY | 169 Pictish symbol stones and early cross-slabs from Orkney Ian G Scott* and Anna Ritchie† ABSTRACT Orkney shared in the flowering of interest in stone carving that took place throughout Scotland from the 7th century AD onwards. The corpus illustrated here includes seven accomplished Pictish symbol- bearing stones, four small stones incised with rough versions of symbols, at least one relief-ornamented Pictish cross-slab, thirteen cross-slabs (including recumbent slabs), two portable cross-slabs and two pieces of church furniture in the form of an altar frontal and a portable altar slab. The art-historical context for this stone carving shows close links both with Shetland to the north and Caithness to the south, as well as more distant links with Iona and with the Pictish mainland south of the Moray Firth. The context and function of the stones are discussed and a case is made for the existence of an early monastery on the island of Flotta. While much has been written about the Picts only superb building stone but also ideal stone for and early Christianity in Orkney, illustration of carving, and is easily accessible on the foreshore the carved stones has mostly taken the form of and by quarrying. It fractures naturally into flat photographs and there is a clear need for a corpus rectilinear slabs, which are relatively soft and can of drawings of the stones in related scales in easily be incised, pecked or carved in relief. -

THE VIKINGS IN ORKNEY James Graham-Campbell Introduction In recent years, it has been suggested that the first permanent Scandinavian presence in Orkney was not the result of forcible land-taking by Vikings, but came about instead through gradual penetration - a period which has been described as one of'informal' settlement (Morris 1985: 213; 1998: 83). Such would have involved a phase of co-existence, or even integration, between the native Picts and the earliest Norse settlers. This initial period, it is supposed, was then followed by 'a second, formal, settlement associated with the estab lishment of an earldom' (Morris 1998: 83 ), in the late 9'h century. The archaeological evidence advanced in support of the first 'period of overlap' is, however, open to alternative interpretation and, indeed, Alfred Smyth has com mented ( 1984: 145), in relation to the annalistic records of the earliest Viking attacks on Ireland, that these 'strongly suggest that the Norwegians did not gradually infiltrate the Northern Isles as farmers and fisherman and then sud denly tum nasty against their neighbours'. Others have supposed that the first phase of Norse settlement in Orkney would have involved, in the words of Buteux (1997: 263): 'ness-taking' (the fortifying of a headland by means of a cross-dyke) and the occupation of small off-shore islands. Crawford ( 1987: 46) argues that headland dykes on Orkney can be interpreted as indicating ness-taking. However many are equally likely to be prehistoric land boundaries, and no bases on either headlands or small islands have yet been positively identified. Buteux continues his discussion by observing, most pertinently, that: While this can not be taken as suggesting that such sites do not remain to be uncovered, the striking fact is that almost all identified Viking-period settlements in the Northern Isles are found overlying or immediately adjacent to sites which were occupied in the preceding Pictish period and which, furthermore, had frequently been settlements of some size and importance. -

From Sail to Steam: London's Role in a Shipbuilding Revolution Transcript Date: Monday, 24 October 2016 - 1:00PM Location: Museum of London 24 October 2016 From Sail to Steam: London’s Role in a Shipbuilding Revolution Elliott Wragg Introduction The almost deserted River Thames of today, plied by pleasure boats and river buses is a far cry from its recent past when London was the greatest port in the world. Today only the remaining docks, largely used as mooring for domestic vessels or for dinghy sailing, give any hint as to this illustrious mercantile heritage. This story, however, is fairly well known. What is less well known is London’s role as a shipbuilder While we instinctively think of Portsmouth, Plymouth and the Clyde as the homes of the Royal Navy, London played at least an equal part as any of these right up until the latter half of the 19th century, and for one brief period was undoubtedly the world’s leading shipbuilder with technological capability and capacity beyond all its rivals. Little physical evidence of these vast enterprises is visible behind the river wall but when the tide goes out the Thames foreshore gives us glimpses of just how much nautical activity took place along its banks. From the remains of abandoned small craft at Brentford and Isleworth to unique hulked vessels at Tripcockness, from long abandoned slipways at Millwall and Deptford to ship-breaking assemblages at Charlton, Rotherhithe and Bermondsey, these tantalising remains are all that are left to remind us of London’s central role in Britain’s maritime story. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 ABSTRACT DEVIANT BURIALS IN VIKING-AGE SCANDINAVIA The thesis brings together information yielded from archaeology and other sources to provide an overall picture of the types of burial practices encountered during the Viking-Age in Scandinavia. From this, an attempt is made to establish deviancy. Comparative evidence, such as literary, runic, legal and folkloric evidence will be used critically to shed perspective on burial practices and the artefacts found within the graves. The thesis will mostly cover burials from the Viking Age (late 8th century to the mid- 11th century), but where the comparative evidence dates from other periods, its validity is discussed accordingly. Two types of deviant burial emerged: the criminal and the victim. A third type, which shows distinctive irregularity yet lacks deviancy, is the healer/witch burial. -

FID IN FOCUS Fall Newsletter 2020 A message from incoming Board Chair Bret Schaefer I am honored to be the incoming Board Chair of FID, following Richard Cheung, who has been an incredible leader of this organization for the past several years. I have been serving as Treasurer, and so have seen the tremendous growth that Friends In Deed has experienced, both financially and programmatically. We are serving so many more people in need, but providing our critical services with the same hallmark compassion, connection, and dignity. Of course, during these extremely difficult times of COVID, there have been unprecedented challenges. I am proud of our staff, volunteers and board of directors for stepping up and meeting these challenges head on, adapting our programs to meet the needs of our community, and doing it so successfully. The foundation for the long-term success of FID is the dedicated support we receive from the community both in terms of volunteers and financial support. We are especially gratified by the increased level of donations we have received in response to the economic hardship our most vulnerable neighbors have experienced this year. I am hopeful that our current challenges will inspire the community to support redoubled efforts to serve the homeless and disadvantaged in Pasadena. So, thanks to all you for being part of our team! I look forward to serving FID in the coming year and with your help we will continue to do together what we cannot do alone. 'Central places' in Vil<ing Age Orkney Frans-Arne Stylegar The present paper is an attenlpt to stinlulate discussion based on an analysis of the distribution patterns of S0111e place-names in Orkney. I It is argued, based on H. Mar\vick's interpretations, that SOlne of the Norse place-natnes in these islands seeln to belong to types that in Scandinavia are considered indicative of nodal or central places of the late Iron Age. The question is posed whether we in Viking Age Orkney can expect a social organisation and a settletnent structure similar to the one in the Scandinavian countries, and - if so - \vhat constitutes such a pattern? The Northern Isles lnay fulfil an itnportant role for students of Scandinavian central places, since one fronl the landnilJn situation in Orkney could, potentially, reach a fuller understanding of both chronological and social aspects of the different kinds of nodal places in the Scandinavian 'holne-lands'. Other parts of Britain, such as the Scottish Western Isles, could in principle serve the salne function, but in the latter case early Norse settletnent sites with only one exception still await discovery (Annit ]996). The study o.f·central places - so/ne Scandinavian examples Strictly speaking, the central place is an archaeological concept, denoting Iron Age settletnents with a rich and varied find material. Thus it covers sites that fulfilled various functions (Fabech 1999). The concept was reintroduced into Scandinavian archaeology after a symposiulll in Denlllark in 1989, first and foretnost to cOlne to tenns with a new type of Inetal-rich settlelnents that tnetal detector surveying had brought to light in Dennlark and Sweden (ibid.). -

You are advised to consult the publisher’s version if you wish to cite from it. http://eprints.gla.ac.uk/188312/ Deposited on: 13 June 2019 Enlighten – Research publications by members of the University of Glasgow http://eprints.gla.ac.uk Location and Destination in Alasdair mac Mhaigshstir Alasdair’s ‘The Birlinn of Clanranald’ Alan Riach FROM THE POETICS OF SPACE AND PLACE IN SCOTTISH LITERATURE, MONIKA SZUBA AND JULIEN WOLFREYS, EDS., (CHAM, SWITZERLAND: PALGRAVE MACMILLAN, 2019), PP.17-30 ‘THE BIRLINN OF CLANRANALD’ is a poem which describes a working ship, a birlinn or galley, its component parts, mast, sail, tiller, rudder, oars and the cabes (or oar-clasps, wooden pommels secured to the gunwale) they rest in, the ropes that connect sail to cleats or belaying pins, and so on, and the sixteen crewmen, each with their appointed role and place; and it describes their mutual working together, rowing, and then sailing out to sea, from the Hebrides in the west of Scotland, from South Uist to the Sound of Islay, then over to Carrickfergus in Ireland. The last third of the poem is an astonishing, terrifying, exhilarating description of the men and the ship in a terrible storm that blows up, threatening to destroy them, and which they pass through, only just making it to safe harbour, mooring and shelter.
