KYC SUMMER SAILING IS IN FULL SWING! Sign up online for Session 3 Starting Monday, July 1 here: https://theclubspot.com/register/camp/IKUTVUVxWF/class Class information: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0ByQScjtvQ9RQOG44dmxteFB4NDhBU2p6 NElQQ0ZRX1dyd1RB/view?usp=sharing So far we have a pretty light turn out for Session 3. This year we have some awesome instructors with the addition of Patrick Cahill who comes with years of experience and is one of Ireland's top Laser and College sailors. Samuel Patton is one of University of Hawaii's top sailors and full of great energy. Kahala Furukawa, Malia Johnson, Morgan Vodzak and Kawika Tumilowicz are all KYC sailors who have been around for years and are all US Sailing Level one, CPR and first aid certified. We have a great group of Instructors as well as Junior helpers and I am teaching classes whenever I can. This means a very CJ Perez & Matt Grimsly training for 29er Nationals in the Gorge, Oregon in July good instructor to student ratio! We emphasize learning in a fun and positive environment and teamwork. Sailing gives the kids confidence, social skills, great problem solving skills as well as other life skills and friendships. In the past year the racing kids have traveled to Canada, New Zealand, California and are currently training for the El Toro North Americans hosted at KYC in August! We hope to get the younger kids up to the racing level but it takes signing up for the sailing sessions! We are flexible if you can only take one week here and there as long as the classes are not filled up. The KYC racing team competed in the HYSA #4 at Pearl Harbor Yacht Club in puffy trade winds on June 15. They got in 5 races with winds starting around 10 knots and built throughout the day until there were 20 knot gusts in the last few races. KYC sailors cleaned up! In the El Toro Fleet we took first in A,B and C divisions. We had five El Toro sailors compete and out of 21 boats they were 1,2,3,4 and 5th overall. The O'Pen Skiff class had some close racing with all three sailors tied going into the last race. In the end HKBC/KYC Friday night sailor Kiley Freitas won with 6 points over HKBC/KYC sailors Maka and Kama Veirra with 7 and 8 points. Zach Severson was our only Laser sailor and sailed to a podium finish in Laser B finishing third. The Pearl Harbor YC crew put on a great event! It was rewarding for the kids to have all the spring and summer practice pay off. They are fun to coach and have become a tight group of friends. I am in the process of getting new KYC sailing shirts so they do not Pearl Harbor HYSA Regatta #4 have to wear the HKBC shirts to all the events! Many of the kids do Monday after school classes at HKBC and Friday/Saturday classes at KYC in the off season so there is a great comaraderie among the group. The next events coming up are the Junior Olympics with Lasers sailing 7/2 and 7/3, 420s sailing 7/8-7/10, El Toros and Lasers 7/11 and 7/12 and finally O'Pen Skiffs (Bics) on 7/13. Registration is all online at: https://www.regattanetwork.com/html/calendar.php?junior=1# We also have moved the El Toro State Champs and Bullship up to 7/27 and 7/28 to accommodate the mainland sailors who are bringing a container of boats for the following week's North Americans, August 1-4. Reminder: Register online by July 7 in order to assure you get the shirt size you need. Extra shirts also should be ordered by July 7. There will not be extra shirts available at the regatta. Registration can be found here: https://theclubspot.com/register/regatta/xOBeExHfKv/class The HYRA calendar has all the Junior events as well as all Hawaii major sailing events here: http://www.hyra.us/resources/2019_HYRA_Calendar_20190515.pdf Please contact me if your child is interested in competing in any of these events! Hope to see you on the water! Aloha, Jesse

History of the Kalakaua Cup The Kalakaua Cup is one of sailing's oldest and most prestigious trophies. The Cup was first presented to King David Kalakaua after he won the Hawaiian Challenge Cup on July 4th, 1889 with the yacht Healani. After the races, the story is told that the King filled the Cup with champagne and passed it around to all the sailors. Continuing the tradition, the Kalakaua Cup Regatta will be sailed on July 4th offshore Kaneohe Bay.
5 International 14 Report by Collin Weston
Tom Pochereva and Yovo Stefanov Photos: Ken Case The I-14 fleet had a slow start to this year's Classboat series. At least one or two I-14s have been out for each Classboat racing day, but several boats being out of commission for repairs has made it difficult to get the three boats required for a race to be scored. Four boats left the dock for Classboat D in April, but the gusty winds caused break downs all four boats before a single race could be run. The first scored races of the season were sailed for Classboat E in May. Tom Pochereva and Yovo Stefanov in 1144 dominated the day with three bullets. Elise Leroux and Richard Argall in 1106 battled it out with Collin Weston and Maddy Kennedy in 1160. With most of the boats repaired and several boats changing ownership, the summer racing season is looking promising for the I-14 fleet. Despite the small numbers on the race course, the I-14 fleet has been very active around the club. Andy Bates has been spearheading the clean-up and organization of the grass dry storage area. Andy, Tom, and the rest of the fleet have also been contributing to race committee duties, including Friday Night Racing, Lipton Cup, Summer Series, and IRF. ~
Vice Commodore continued some skippers and offer up your deckhand skills if you don’t have a boat of your own. Summer Circuit may already be over the but the sailboat racing isn’t slowing down. Kalakaua Cup will be held on July 6 with class boat racing and IRF racing in July as well. For those that may not be into the serious racing, Thursday night bulkhead racing is ongoing and the Riddle Regatta is coming up on July 21. I have been told that if you want to win this year you better brush up on your Elvis and Marilyn Monroe knowledge! Finally, mark your calendars for the Joe Cochran Memorial Race on August 17. Last year we had about 10 boats on the line and I would love to see at least 15 this year. Hope to see you out there.
Aloha,
Mike Van Woerkom
6 MOLOKAI CRUISE MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND
CENTURY CUP 2019 by Andy Bates
The Century Cup is part of the rich history of the International 14 class. It was donated to the class in 1961 by long time 14 sailors Captain Charles Curry and Norman Moore. It has been raced for 27 times. I have always wanted to enter the race, and this year the stars aligned for me. Dominic and his crew Simona Saccani who live in Nice, France have sailed at the KYC PAC RIM race twice. Their club is Itchenor Sailing Club where the race is run. I teamed up with Simona, who just turned 50 years old to enter, and sailed their boat. The race normally runs about an hour weather depending. Much to my surprise three old Brits who turned up to sail were older than me!!!! The level of competition was very high with 7 past Nationals Champions and two past World Champions — including the current holder. The breeze was shifty Aloha! KYC member Stefanie Dukes and friends held a going away party at the yacht club, where and the velocity was up and down which made for they made haku lei and enjoyed a lovely evening. lots of place changing. We got a great port tack start Photo: Stefanie Dukes on a wind shift at the start and got to the weather See something beautiful happening around the club mark third. We sailed consistently and and want to share it? Send us a photo and include a conservatively around the course finishing sixth out caption, and we’ll do our best to get it in the next of 13 on handicap. They have a very complex edition of Telltales. [email protected] handicapping system for age and time finishes. The party at the club that night was sold out. Great food, lots of laughter, and many memories and sea stories were shared. I made some new friends and reconnected with lots of old friends. I presented the KYC burgee and invited the group to Hawaii for the next PAC RIM in 2020.
We are the pink kite!!!!
