Steve Nicholson Memorial Race NORTHAMPTON SAILING CLUB Notice of - Steve Nicholson Memorial Race At Pitsford Reservoir on - Saturday 25th January 2014 For - The Steve Nicholson Memorial Trophy (This event is part of the SailJuice Winter Series 2013/2014) Open only to classes listed in Appendix SNT below and as updated at (http://www.northamptonsailingclub.org/index.asp?selection=Calendar&cy=2014) Competitors wishing to enter a class of boat not listed in Appendix SNT should please apply to [email protected] giving details of their proposed entry. If the race committee accept the class it will be added to Appendix SNT and the prospective entrant will be notified by email. Please note any entry will still need to be made in the usual way and will be subject to the entry limit. Advertising will be allowed in accordance with the Class Rules of the competing classes. The races will be governed by the Racing Rules of Sailing. Competitors should note that Northampton Sailing Club implements the RYA Racing Charter and that they will be required to undertake to sail in compliance with the Charter, which can be found at the front of the RYA rule book. CONDITIONS OF ENTRY The safety of a boat and her entire management including insurance shall be the sole responsibility of the owner/competitor racing the boat, who must ensure that the boat and crew are adequate to face the conditions that may arise in the course of the race. Neither the sailing instructions, nor the inspection of the boat limits or reduces the absolute responsibility of the owner/competitor for his/her crew his/her boat and the management thereof. The race organisers shall not be responsible for any loss, damage, death or personal injury however caused to the owner/competitor, his skipper or crew as a result of their taking part in the race or races. Moreover, every owner/competitor warrants the suitability of his boat for the race or races and that the boat and helm have appropriate insurance cover for the event to Third Party of at least £3,000,000. Entries through Sailracer from non-members, and NSC members wishing to enter the Sailjuice Winter Series, are initially limited to 120. Further places may be made available via Sailracer should NSC members not take up their allocation of 40 places. Availability of any additional places will be notified on the Sailracer website event page. Entries from non-members and NSC members wishing to enter the Sailjuice Winter Series can shortly be made online at: http://events.sailracer.org/eventsites/globalwarmup.asp?eventid=179314 Entries from those NSC members not wishing to take part in any other event in the Sailjuice Winter Series are now being accepted online in the members section of the NSC website. Updated 06 10 2013 Any of the 40 NSC reserved places not taken up by the 11th January may be released to the Sailracer entry system without further notice. Entries will close at midnight on Thursday January 23rd at the latest or earlier if entry limits have been reached. (Please note your entry is only accepted once full payment has been received.) ENTRY FEE £20 per boat - in aid of Asthma UK (National Asthma Campaign) - an option will be available on the websites to make an additional donation. Schedule 10:15 Briefing 11:00 1st Race start 12:30 2nd Race start To follow 3rd Race and 4th Race There will be three primary fleets, Non-asymmetric Double handed, Non-asymmetric Single handed and Asymmetrics. Fleets will be allocated start times after entries close. N.B. Foiling boats will be scored separately and depending on numbers may have their own start. Handicap racing results calculated on average lap times, using the PY handicap system with ratings adapted for this event, details of which are available in appendix SNT below. The scoring system will be as per Rule A2 Low points System with a tie-break as stated in Racing Rules Appendix A 8.1 and 8.2. The Event Sailing Instructions will be available on the NSC website http://www.northamptonsailingclub.org/index.asp?selection=Calendar&cy=2014 please print a copy and bring it with you as , other than copies posted on the official notice board, further printed copies will not be available on the day of the event. We regret that entry fees are non-refundable in the event that you are unable to participate.     I4 Rules of the INTERNATIONAL I4 CLASS Printed February, 2016 Effective from 31 March, 2016 RULES The Name of the Class shall be the International I4 Class The International Fourteen is a development class sailing dinghy. Under the authority of the International Fourteen World Association, the Measurement Rules presented in this booklet constitute the sole reference, except where noted, for the measurement of boats in this class. The World Sailing Sail Measurement instructions shall not apply. The World Sailing Equipment Rules of Sailing (“ERS”) definitions shall apply to words in bold text. They shall be used in the sail measurement processes. Where a definition is amended or modified by these rules, the modified definition shall be used. A boat includes its hull, spars, sails and fittings. The units of measurement shall be metric. 2 HULL and CENTREBOARD Note: Unless specifically required otherwise hereunder, all measurements shall be taken parallel to one of the three major axis of the hull - vertical, horizontal or transverse - related to the waterline and fore and aft centre line of the hull. Rule 1 Length of Hull and Fittings (a) The overall length of the hull shall not exceed 4267mm including stem band but excluding all the rudder fittings, transom flaps, drain plugs and stem fittings. Stem fittings shall not project more than 25mm beyond the surface of the hull. No fittings or equipment which have the effect of elongating the skin of the boat beyond a length of 4267mm is permitted. (b) A bowsprit and a device to support such bowsprit are allowed. Neither shall extend more than 900mm forward of the hull.

  • International 14 Dinghy
    INTERNATIONAL 14 DINGHY The 14’ Dinghy was the "young man’s boat" of the 1920’s through the 1950’s. Starting with the "cats" and progressing through the sloop-rigged lapstrakes to the open-deck, smooth-skinned English type, these sensitive boats were the primary small boat class at RYC. Few were the skippers and crew of our larger boats who did not, at one time or another, perform on the RYC dinghy course or engage the Canadians in the Douglass, Emerson, Curry, or Eastwood Trophy regattas. Early skippers include George Ford, Bill Tarr, Dwight Hill, Mike Maijgren, Ritter Shumway, Mort Anstice, Bill Little, Gil Barber, John Gottschalk, and Lew Howard. They were soon followed by Norm Cole, Virginia Cole (one of RYC’s first woman racing skippers), Jerry Castle, Bob Cummings, George Angle, Dick Castle, Bob Corbett, Jon Heinrich, and Howie Rekers to name but a few. They participated in such memorable sailing events as the 1937 four-boat team trip to Denmark and England, the 1939 team race series at Larchmont, the numerous home- and-home Eastwood Series with Royal St. Lawrence Yacht Club in Montreal, the yearly Essex Yacht Club regatta in Connecticut, the 1948 North American held in Rochester, and the annual Bermuda Race Week. In 1950 Bob Lawless and Dave Cunningham skippered their own 14’s at the World Regatta in Los Angeles, and in 1952 Frank R. Shumway and Gene VanVoorhis tied this class in the LYRA Regatta. The following year at LYRA Charlie Shumway, Gene Van Voorhis, and Ted Goodwin swept first, second, and third place.

    PLEON’S MISSION Pleon is a unique club which emphasizes confidence, independence and responsibility through junior sailing. Since the Club’s founding in 1887, Pleon’s flag officers and members have been youngsters under the age of 21. The purpose of the Pleon Sailing Program is to involve as many young people as possible in the sport of sailing in a fun, educational atmosphere. The program supports both serious competitors and recreational sailors of all skill levels, and is focused on building sailing skills while also promoting sportsmanship, fostering teamwork and strengthening respect for oneself and others. Pleon owns a fleet of club boats which are available for the club’s members to use including: 28 Optimist Dinghies (Optis), 5 Lasers, 3 Sonars and 24 Club 420’s. PLEON YACHT CLUB AND THE 2017 SUMMER SAILING PROGRAM The 2018 Pleon Sailing Program will begin Monday, June 20 and end Friday, August 17. The primary emphasis of the program is learning the sport of sailing and developing life skills through experience on the water. Pleon also provides members with a variety of additional summertime activities. Social events include cookouts, movie nights, Great Day, the Commodore’s Ball and Awards Night. Elections for flag officers are held in August for the following summer. Pleon often hosts regattas including regional, national and international class championships. Commodore Chloe Brown will be on hand each day during the summer to answer any questions regarding club and social activities.     A Fine Reach Home: Excerpts from a Sailor’s Wind Journal Lynn Fels English Bay, 1976, International 14 We surface amidst sodden sails, shouting in surprise and haste. “Are you okay?” “Where are you?” “Hang on to the gunwale, no wait, swim the bow into the wind, now swim over here, we’ll bring her up together.” Martin and I, skipper and crew, throw our weight onto the centerboard. The boat reluc- tantly responds, the mast tilting skyward, rising from the sea. I taste the salt of ocean spray that catches me unaware after so many years of sailing fresh-waters. Equilibrium restored, seawater emptying through the automatic bailers, our sailboat moves across the water in ecological tension between human, craft, wind, and geography. Martin tends to the navigation, attentive weight- ing of hand on tiller, as I set the jib and cleat the sheet. Shifting body weight, secured by the trapeze,I feel the arc of body, an embodied inter- pretation of movement in response to the wind’s presence in the tautness of the sails. Sailing in the various conditions of wind requires an instinctive chore- ography of release and defiance, surrender and embrace, by skipper and crew. 180 Canadian Journal of Environmental Education, 13 (2), 2008 This is what holds me to task, as I swing in and out of the boat secured to the mast by the trapeze wire that holds me in place. “Wind’s coming! Trapeze!” Martin yells, but I am already in concert with the wind, welcoming its arrival, anticipating its departure. Sailing, a harnessing of wind with canvas to propel a sailboat across dis- tances of water, in winds shaped by landforms, airflow and temperature, requires constant renegotiation by skipper and crew in response to the wind’s changeable presence.
