Creating Caring Community – Four Lessons in Communal Kindness

In Hebrew, a is called a, a holy community. For guidance as to what that means, we can look to the (Sotah 14a):

Rabbi Ḥama said in the name of Rabbi Ḥanina: “Follow Adonai your ” (Deuteronomy 13:5): What does this mean? Is it possible for a mortal to follow God’s presence? The verse means to teach us that we should follow the attributes of the Holy One. As God clothes the naked, you should clothe the naked. The Bible teaches that the Holy One visited the sick; you should visit the sick. The Holy One comforted those who mourned; you should comfort those who mourn. The Holy One buried the dead; you should bury the dead.

Thus summer, I would like to offer four opportunities to learn to be like the Holy One of , who visits the sick, comforts the bereaved, and buries the dead:

Give Me Your Hand: Guidance on Visiting the Sick

On Thursday, June 21, 2018, at 7:00 PM, We will explore the Jewish practice of Bikkur Cholim, visiting the sick. Our goal will be to provide clear, concise, and easily accessible information about traditional prac- tices, describing the historical and theological context for this practice and including traditional prayers, new prayers, and a checklist of practical advice.

Nihum Aveilim: A Guide for the Comforter

Too often, those who attend Jewish funerals, both as mourners and comforters, are not fully familiar with our traditions, practices and prayers. On Thursday, June 28, 2018, at 7:00 PM, We will seek explore what we can do to be of comfort, seeking guidance and insight, greater understanding, familiarity and awareness, through explanations of burial, funeral, and shiva rituals, as well as Hebrew prayers and texts, with translations and transliterations.

K'vod Hamet: A Guide for the Bereaved

Two guiding principles inform all Jewish rituals related to and mourning, namely k'vod hamet (respect for the dead) and nichum avelim (consoling the mourners). Using these two principles as reference points, on Thursday, July 12, 2018, at 7:00 PM we will explain the Jewish customs regarding burial and funeral preparations, grieving, and accepting comfort.

Chesed Shel Emet: The Truest Act of Kindness

Taharah practices have deep historical roots. Beginning in Mishnaic times, specific procedures and customs evolved in various locations and through many generations. As a result, numerous traditions exist today. On Thursday, July 19, at 7:00 PM we will detail the ritual of preparing a body for burial, including a liturgical understanding of the prayers that are said while performing a taharah.

The books upon which these classes were created are all available from EKS Publishing Co. (www.ekspublishing.com)

Torah Fund Mah Tovu MA TOVU - How that we all came together to support the five institutions of learning of the Conservative Movement. All of us together working to ensure the continuing education of our future , Cantors, Teachers and Lay Leaders. As we reach the end of the Torah Fund year I want to thank all of you who have responded so generously. Even as the size of our Sisterhood seems to shrink, the number of donors seems to as well. We have reached our Goal of $8,000. However, in the coming year I hope all of Temple Beth will participate in the Torah Fund Campaign. It is not how much you give but that you give. During this time of summer ease think about how you can increase your participation. As it is written, you need not complete the task only to do your part.

I kook forward to a future of continued success. To having a group of you joining me in participating in the work of Sister- hood and Torah Fund. Many hands make work easy and new faces encourage those around us.

Now just a bit of learning from Women’s League.

“The Hebrew word “” is often thought to be synonymous with charity. Derived from the Hebrew Tzedek, however, its true meaning is justice, righteousness, or fairness. Tzedakah is considered to be one of the most central mitzvot to and is often thought to be more important than all of the other mitzvot combined. Tzedakah encompasses the responsibility to give assistance, both financial and otherwise, to those individuals in need, or to worthwhile social cultural and educational causes. Judaism teaches us that donors benefit from Tzedakah as much or more than the recipients. In fact our tradition speaks of Tzedakah as a cycle. The gifts that we give to others will eventually return to us in the form of G-d’s , bestowed upon the giver and receiver alike.”

TBS Book Club July Selection

The Jewish State by Theodor Herzl

In this 70th year of the modern State of Israel, your Book Club travels back to the beginning. Not the beginning of our people’s history in the Land; not the beginning of the State; but the beginning of the Idea that the path from our collective dream to its realization could be a path of modern agitation, statecraft and ultimately statehood.

Join us to explore Herzl’s idea in his own words – words that electrified the Jewish world when published in 1896. Then consider our own dreams for Israel today.

The book is available from Amazon and from Barnes & Noble online. The Dover Publications 1989 paperback edition includes a 30-page biography of Herzl by the late Israeli historian Alex Bein. The Jewish State does not appear to be available from local libraries.

If that includes you, consider joining us for dinner and a lively discussion,

Wednesday, July 11th at 6:30 pm.

For location or questions contact Deborah Chankin at 562-494-0907.
