WELCOME
Chairman’s welcome to Ealing Trailfinders
For today’s Green King IPA Championship match and for the second time this season, we offer a warm Bedfordshire welcome to our friends from Coventry RUFC to Dillingham Park. You will probably know that Coventry have been here during the National 1 campaign but last year they played in the Green King IPA Championship finishing in 8th position. Coventry is not too far from Ampthill, so we hope to see a good following making the trip down to add to what is bound to be a great atmosphere.
I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome the Mayor of Ampthill, Mr Ian Titman, the Lady Mayoress, Ms Maggie Fuller and the Mayor’s honourable guests to our club lunch. I hope you enjoy the day.
Our last fixture against the visitors was at the Butts Park Arena where we were given a bit of a rugby lesson. The final score was 64-26 with the home side throwing the ball around and attacking from all over the park. Let us hope our defence holds firm today during the league encounter. Coventry currently lie in a very creditable 3rd place in the league, having won four matches and drawn one (two points behind Cornish Pirates in the 2nd spot).
Ampthill fans will still be smiling from our last game, away to Bedford on Boxing day!! Many of us will have seen the quality of teams playing against Bedford over the years but never would have believed they would have seen Ampthill challenging in a competitive fixture but challenge we did. The second half was a pleasure to observe. The team held firm in defence and expressed themselves well in attack. Bedford became more and more frustrated and Ampthill held their nerve. To finish with a score line of 23-10 demonstrated a real milestone for the club.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of the club members, coach’s staff and supporters a very healthy, happy and prosperous New Year.
Come on you A’s

LAST TIME OUT
5000 Watch Ampthill Secure Their Third Consecutive Win Over Bedford Blues
Ampthill travelled the 9 miles to a wet Goldington Road on a miserable Boxing Day which had seen significant rain all day until an hour or so before kick off. Thankfully the remaining drizzle ceased as the two sides ran out while the pitch was in surprisingly good condition and there was little wind to trouble the kickers. The bumper capacity crowd (nominally 5,000) indicated the sense of playing a local derby on a bank holiday while the demand for tickets exceeded supply.
Amps squad saw a number of changes, up front former Blue Soane Tonga’uiha (prop), Syd Blackmore (hooker), Billy Johnson (lock) & Sam Hudson (No 8) rotated to the starting lineup, as did Tongan Leon Fukofuka (scrum half) and Argentine Serafin
Bordoli (centre) in the backs. On the bench Dave Ward (hooker), Carl Burgess (lock) and Sam Hanks (centre) rotated while Matt Collins (prop) and Argentine Facundo Dominguez (flanker) returned.
A’s began well, taking the game to Bedford and putting their defence under pressure for the first 15 minutes or so which increased when the visitors secured two successive scrum penalty goal chances for Ampthill fly half & Captain Louis Grimoldby, the former (on 6 minutes) sliding past the post while the latter (13 minutes) bisecting them.
Going behind seemed to trigger the home side to raise their game with the remainder of the half belonging to hosts in both territory and possession. The game was essentially being played pack to pack with both sets of backs committed to their defensive duties but having little to no chance to shine going forward.
Blues pack had recovered to the point of forcing penalties against Amps scrum while their line out was proving secure and the loose exchanges shaded in their favour. The result was a quarter of tough defence for A’s, with little respite, as every time they cleared their lines Bedford put them straight back under pressure.
6
Eventually after multiple phases in the red zone the 32nd minute saw number 8 Alafoti Faosiliva crash over from close range to right of the posts, fly half Will Hooley adding the extras.
Blues exerted further pressure through to half time but were unable to trouble the scoreboard again leaving them leading 3-7 at oranges.
Whatever was said during the interval the visitors came out of the blocks firing winning a 44th minute penalty which Grimoldby converted to reduce the lead to 1pt.
Just 2 minutes later, more or less straight from the kick off, the hosts were penalised
and the resulting penalty kicked to the corner. Ampthill executed a perfect catch & drive with hooker Syd Blackmore coming up with the ball having touched down wide on the left, Grimoldby’s difficult conversion adding insult to injury.
On 54 minutes, after the home side’s first period of possession in the half, Amps were penalised allowing Hooley to reduce the deficit to 13-10 with a penalty goal.
A’s responded with a fine period of play, multiple phases deep in Bedford’s 22 stretching the defence, a fact noted by Grimoldby whose double missed pass gave wing Sam Baker a 58th minute try scoring opportunity wide on the left with which he made no mistake, Grimoldby again adding an excellent touch line conversion.
Such was the tightness of the game this was possibly the only backs opportunity of the match!
Now leading by 10 pts the visitors stretched their lead further on 66 mins as more pressure led to another penalty goal chance, Grimoldby continuing his streak with another fine kick.
7
Blues redoubled their efforts forcing Ampthill onto the back foot but Grimoldby cleared the lines to half way twice from deep inside his 22. As the pressure built and time was running out the game became a little fractious with one or two sets of handbags interrupting play. Eventually as Amps again foiled a Bedford maul attack lock Shay Kerry received a yellow card but, having chosen a scrum, the hosts failed to capitalise.
A’s now retained possession running down the clock until replacement scrum half Darryl Veenendaal kicked the ball dead to bring an end to a fine afternoon’s entertainment.
Having beaten the home side three times in a row Ampthill retained bragging rights but the result could have been different if Bedford had taken their chances in the first half.
With a played 7 won 3 drawn 1 record in the Championship, Amps connections can feel satisfied with their first set of fixtures at level 2 but there are another 15 remaining, no one involved should underestimate the challenge remaining.
Ampthill head coach Paul Turner commnented “I am proud of the passion and improved accuracy shown in the 2nd half which proved decisive. We just did enough against a good Bedford side and I am very pleased for the group who responded to the pressure we placed onto them during our preparation. “

TODAY’S OPPONENTS
Coventry RUFC
The first headquarters were established at Old Bull Fields and in the formative years Coventry remained pretty well unbeaten. When the ground became enclosed, it became known as the Butts with the first match played there against Stourbridge in 1880. By the late 1890s, involvement began in the Midland Counties Cup which was won a total of five times.
By now players were winning representative honours, W Judkins becoming the club’s first British Lion in 1899 during the tour to Australia – overall, 10 Coventry players have over the years worn the famous red jersey. Ben Tuke & H G Wells were the club’s first internationals, both representing Ireland in 1894.
W L Oldham became the first of the club’s great forwards of the 20th century to represent England. Early in the century the Butts was lost when the professional Northern Union game took brief hold in the city.
By the end of the First World War, the Butts had been taken over by a local firm and a temporary home was found at the Coventry & North Warwickshire Cricket Ground at Binley Road before Coundon Road was purchased in 1921 and developed as the club’s headquarters which was to last for over 80 years.
What was considered to be the first golden era of Coventry rugby came in the mid1920s when losses were very rare. That brilliance continued and carried over with Coventry producing six England internationals as well as playing a full part in the early Warwickshire successes in the County Championship.
The years of the Second World War brought more disruption, but from a playing point of view despite the inevitable difficulties, it became one of the most remarkable periods in the club’s history. Many players remained locally for essential war work because of the importance of the city as a key engineering centre, and consequently a record 72 games were won in succession, with a number of players becoming Victory internationals.
The early 1950s saw something of a dip in fortune, but it was not to last too long as the club continued to produce many international players, not only for England but also Scotland and Wales. In 1958 the Midlands won their first-ever match against a touring side, some two thirds of the team which defeated Australia coming from the Coventry club. This was also the time when again Coventry players totally dominated the County side, which saw Warwickshire win the title 7 times in 8 seasons.
The early 60s saw the club’s players continue to win international honours, indeed by the early 70s at one time 13 players from the club were representing England. The RFU Club Knock Competition, later to be known as the John Player Cup, was won in consecutive seasons 1972/73 and 73/74, the second of which coincided with the centenary celebrations.
9
Merit tables were then beginning to come on the scene, the early years seeing the club at the top end of both the England & Wales versions. The 80s, however, saw a dip in playing fortune and when League Rugby was first introduced in 1987 the club spent just one season in what is now known as the Premiership. The next 10 years or so became something of a struggle before the 1996/97 season saw the side get to within a whisker of promotion back to the top division, just losing out in a double-headed play-off to London Irish.
It was however to be at a severe cost for within a little over 12months severe financial difficulties hit the club before a rescue package was put together just in time for the 1999/2000 season. By now, however, Coundon Road needed considerable investment and after some 84 years the decision was made to move away and back full circle to the club’s beginnings. The Butts Park Arena saw its first game in September 2004, but again financial difficulties were to bite and it took the considerable efforts of members, supporters, former players and companies to rescue the situation during the summer of 2008. Relegation unsurprisingly followed from the Championship, the club regrouping in National League One for the 2010/11 season with the players, previously full- time becoming part time again. Promotion was secured to the Championship in 2017-18. That season Coventry lost only two games – in April Ampthill beat Coventry by 22-10 at Dillingham Park.
The present Ampthill clubhouse was officially opened in 1981 with a game against the Public School Wanderers. Several Coventry players were represented in PSW; Rossborough, Hobley. Malic and Kidner. An iconic figure of Coventry Rugby, Peter Rossborough made his club debut in 1967-68 while at Durham University and went on to make over 350 appearances, playing in both RFU Cup-winning sides of the 1970s, and is a member of Cov’s 100-try club with 109. Peter won seven England caps following his debut against Wales at Cardiff in 1971, captained the club, coached the first team and, as chairman, saw the club through the difficult period of rebuilding after administration in 2009. He has continued his long service to the club as president. We hope to welcome Peter at Dillingham Park again this afternoon.

SENIOR UPDATE
Ampthill 1881 69-14 Wimbledon 2nd XV
Ampthill 1881 started 2020 in the perfect way by scoring 10 trys against a Wimbledon side that held Ampthill to a 12-10 score line at the beginning of the season.
1881 set piece was accurate all day with the front row winning a penalty, then the forwards delivering the perfect platform from a lineout for Rob Hughes to crash over. The back took over for the next one with Kwaku Asiedu fielding a loose kick, charging up the field and offloading to Will Allman who just got over the line. Just as Wimbledon were putting their game together, a turnover saw Mikey Waters sprint clear from halfway for 21-0. Four try bonus point was wrapped up with Will Foster turning on the after burners, as the temperature at pitch 4 started to decrease. Liam Everitt crossed the line in the corner but for a valiant cover tackle, knocking the ball out of Everitts hand. Seemed more difficult not to score. Asiedu showing him how it was done by scoring two before the half was done. A yellow card for Lewis Sharp in the red zone after repeated infrongements, lead to Wimbledon scoring twice during the sin bin period to bring the half to a close 40-14.
Ampthill scored another four trys in the second half. Hughes completing a hattrick, Chris Diamond and Ollie Walliker finishing with a flourish. The only sour not being Niall Cleaver being carried from the field with a suspected broken ankle.
Very good performance from Ampthill this week with forwards laying the perfect platform for backs to finish off the chances. 1881 climb up to fifth in the table but with several games in hand over sides above them.

Richmond Normans 51 Ampthill Jets 19
Tough day at the office for the Jets against a superior Richmond side who fully deserved an emphatic win.
Richmond couldn’t raise a team earlier in the season to play at Dillingham Park but at home, they had a squad of 22. Jets were determined not to cry off a match and we pulled together a 19 man squad and to a man they were superb, never giving up and so nearly grabbing the 4th try at the end for a bonus point.
22
The starting pack for Ampthill had 2 teenagers, including Ali Gibbs making his debut and two blokes who will never see their 30s again! (well if it’s good enough for the 1st XV!) The starting backline had another 3 teenagers. Richmond had a full back bigger than our second rows and who to be honest, coasted through the match, making line break after line break, and offloading at will. Richmond were also very streetwise and after a 13th penalty in less than 30 minutes (majority in the red zone) the ref decided a yellow card was overdue.
The good news is the Jets never gave up, didn’t blame the (rather good) ref and scored 3 tries. The first score came during the sin bin when a poor Richmond clearance kick found its way to outside centre, Will Norford (shirt sponsor CJ Drylining) who cut inside the last defender for a try which he then converted. Just the start of a man of the match performance from Will.
Half time talk centered around needing to keep positive and go for 3 more tries and a bonus point. Jets just fell short but did score two more tries. First was a great offload by replacement centre Matt Garrett to replacement wing Bartek Krzyzanski, excellently converted by sharpshooter Norford. Next Jets try came from an initial lineout catch and drive by Ampthill with replacement hooker Jonny Cresswell in control at the back then breaking near the line and offloading to scrum-half (shirt sponsor Wardown Engineering) Tom Clark who finished in the tight corner under pressure from the defender- a finish Dad Leigh and Grandad Slim could only have dreamed of doing!!
With 2 minutes on the clock, the Jets didn’t bother with the conversion, running back to get the game restarted and go for that bonus point try. Despite regaining possession and going on the attack a knock-on led to the ref blowing for time.
