Saturday 12th October 2019 Ampthill & District RUFC v Nottingham Rugby WELCOME

Chairman’s welcome to Nottingham Rugby Club A very warm welcome to the players, management, guests and supporters of Nottingham Rugby Club to Dillingham Park for their first ever competitive fixture. We sincerely hope that Nottingham enjoy the day, our humble facilities and traditional rugby hospitality. This is our first foray into the Green King IPA Championship. Our visitors are seasoned professionals having played at this level of competition for many years. They finished eighth in the league last year placing them in the top 20 clubs in the Country, so our task this afternoon is huge. Nottingham went down last week at the Bay to 42 – 7 in the Championship Cup. Head Coach Neil Fowkes gave his full squad the chance of a run out in the Cup but make no mistake a full-strength Nottingham will be on the paddock to face Ampthill. Ampthill 1st XV have played a couple of tricky games, namely Coventry and former Cup Champions, Ealing, before a really great afternoon last Saturday at near neighbours, Bedford RFC. Ampthill played well defensively and scored four great tries for a bonus point win. The evening celebrations saw a couple of shandies consumed in the marquee by the A’s faithful. This was a historic victory, our first against Bedford in a competitive fixture. This means a lot to the team and the club. We can reflect on this at the end of the season, but this will be a hollow victory if we are unable to pick up points in the Championship. In the best rugby tradition, I hope the day is very enjoyable to all our visitors and you leave having tasted good rugby, Tracy’s ARUFC meat pies and Bex’s beers. Have a good afternoon Alex Radley Chairman, Ampthill and District RUFC

3 LAST SEASON’S ROUNDUP

The Senior Club has had the most successful year in its history with the 1st Team winning National 1 and gaining promotion to the Greene King IPA Championship. The 1881’s winning Zoo 1 for the first time in their history, beating Richmond by 2 points to the title; the Jets had another fantastic year completing a League and Cup double and also a Champions Cup which were a play off between Herts and Beds Merit table and Herts and Middlesex Merit Table.

The Jets have applied to join the Midlands Reserve Team League which should give them far more competitive rugby.

The Extra’s won Herts Middlesex Merit Table 2 but missed out by two points in the Cup final to achieving a double.

The 5th team were probably the most unlucky side in the Club finishing runner up in the Banana Bread Beer Merit Table just missing out on promotion but beating the top team Sharnbrook’s 1st Team both home and away. They missed out the league purely because the opposition didn’t turn up on the last weekend of the year. Only one word to describe that …….gutted!

An exciting time lies ahead with , Cornish Pirates and Ealing Trail Finders and potentially coming to Dillingham Park next season. Thank you to all Clubs Supporters and Club Members who have stuck with us as we have gained our 5th promotion in the last 12 seasons. Without your help and support we would not have achieved this success. Mark Lavery Director of Rugby TODAY’S OPPONENTS

Nottingham Rugby Club The club was established circa 1877 by Alexander Birkin after returning from Rugby School, where he was introduced to the sport. The Birkin family later purchased the land at Ireland Avenue that would be the home of the club until 2006. The club’s heyday was in the late 1980s with a number of top international players representing the first XV. These included Simon Hodgkinson, Rob Andrew, Dusty Hare and Brian Moore (also a Lion) representing England and Chris Gray representing Scotland. The advent of professionalism in 1995-96 saw the Green & Whites fall on hard times and the first XV narrowly avoided relegation to the regional divisions in 2002–03. The club has bounced back since then and was promoted into National League One in 2003–04. The club finished a creditable 7th in 2005–06 before leaving Ireland Avenue after 102 years. Nicknamed the Green & Whites, in reference to the club’s kit, the first XV play at Lady Bay, The club has recently made a move from Meadow Lane, the home ground of Notts County to Lady Bay in West Bridgford, outside Nottingham. They previously played at Ireland Avenue until the end of the 2005–06 season.

Head Coach, Neil Fowkes, needs no introduction. Having devoted his entire playing career to Nottingham Rugby, Fowkes has been part of the team for over 30 years.

Nottingham lock Tom Holmes has been named club captain for the 2019/20 season. Tom began playing rugby for local side Sandbach RFC, leading to him being scouted by Premiership giants at the age of just 16. He then represented England at U16 and U18 level until a severe ankle injury left him on the sidelines for six months at U20 level. Holmes bounced back however, going on to play for Sedgley Park and, after resigning from the Sharks, joining Titans in 2014, where he made a respectable 52 starts before leaving for Lady Bay.

Bedford Blues 12 v 25 1st XV On what was a historic day for the Maroon and Gold, going to to play Bedford Blues for the short term title of the best team in Bedfordshire and the first competitive game between the two clubs , the A’s came away with a deserved win. The Blues turned Pink for the day in support of the McMillan Cancer trust and they didn’t have the ideal start to the day with a couple of players failing fitness tests on the morning of the match. The first forty minutes were separated by a Kwaku Asiedu try and a Louis Grimoldby penalty against a Dann Temm try. A loose kick let Rich Lane punish the A’s with a break down the right-hand side that led to a Teem try and a 5 v 8 half time score With the elements and the slope in Paul Turners sides favour the A’s started to turn the screw and kept the pressure on the home side. The A’s had spent the week working hard on defensive drills led by forwards player-coach and this proved critical when the Blues back line came probing the A’s defensive system but the A’s held firm in the face of the onslaught. After gradually taking back control, an inch-perfect kick by Bordoli was regathered by Baker who found Jarryd Sage in support who dotted the ball down and fly-half Grimoldby converted for the A’s to lead 5 v 15. The Blues now had the joint battle against the clock and the slope and this led to a number of uncharacteristic mistakes and Kwaku Asiedu was on hand to take advantage and score his second try to put some breathing space between the teams at 5 v 20. This signalled a Blues fight back and on 71 minutes Huw Worthington the Blues number eight who had carried hard all day scored a converted try to leave the score at 12 v 20. The A’s responded again, camping in the Blues half and keeping the ball down in the right-hand corner for multiple phases. Backs and Forwards shared the workload equally and finally Karim Lynch crashed over in the right hand corner for the A’s fourth and bonus point try to leave the final score at Blues 12 v 25 A’s. A’s fans left a packed Goldington Road with a skip in their step and the first points of the season in the bag. Head Coach Paul Turner said. “It was a great occasion to be a part of and to have so many supporters there to raise money for McMillan Cancer Trust made it really special day. I thought we played well for large parts of the game but we still need to improve our set piece. Defensively we took a big step forward and relied on our system more than individual effort which was pleasing. It’s only our third game together and it’s been a tough start to the season but we are progressing every week and next week we see Nottingham Rugby come to Dillingham Park for our first game ever in the Green King IPA Championship.” 8 A’S COVER STAR

Dave Ward Player-Coach, Hooker For the first edition of “A’s Cover Star” we caught up with our new Forwards Player-Coach Dave Ward: When and where did you start playing rugby Dave? I started playing rugby at Bath when I was 6 years old in the minis. I went through the juniors, youths (I was a ballboy) then went onto play 1st team when I was 19. So who was your favourite player as a child? Growing up I used to love watching Jonah Lomu play especially in the world cup in 1995. I also enjoyed watching Keith Wood for Ireland You’ve played in some big games Dave, what’s the most memorable game in your career so far? It would have to be Big Game 10 for Quins vs Saints 2 years ago. I was captain and luckily opened the scoring. We produced one of our best performances of the season and all my family were there to watch including my nieces which was great. Who is the toughest opponent you’ve played against? I’ll have to put 2, one for the old school when I was younger and 1 more recent. When I first played for Bath we played against Leinster with Brian O’Driscoll and he was a different level even then. More recently, Maro Itoje is pretty hard to play against very uncompromising. He is very strong and is always putting pressure on the opponents. And finally Dave, tell our supporters and members something interesting about yourself? I’m actually taking my level 2 tennis coaching badge as well at the moment so that is pretty different to rugby. Also my girlfriend Abbie Scott plays for England and Quins so not sure if that’s interesting or just that I’m pretty proud of what she is doing! Many thanks Dave – good luck today!

The 2019/20 season has seen the mini and youth section at Ampthill continue to grow in strength and size. Numbers of playing boys and girls have never been higher. Sunday’s at Dillingham park is always busy hosting matches or training for the age groups from U6’s up to the U16’s, with the Ampthill Academy (U17/U18) playing games on a Saturday. Whilst the minis have only recently started their fixtures with back to back Sundays against local clubs Huntingdon and Olney the youth teams have already started their league games. Notably the U16’s have begun the season very well kick starting their East Midlands league campaign with a 60 points to 10 victory over Towcester. The U15’s have found the start of the season a little more difficult unfortunately losing a couple of East Midlands league matches to Bedford and Kettering respectively. The losses being more down to a number of key players not being available. The two biggest youth team squads, the U13’s and U14’s have also started the season well, winning more of their games than losing. Today you will see players and coaches from the U6’s and U7’s representing the mini section with the Guard of Honour for both teams before kick off and our thanks go to the U14’s who are providing the 6 ball boys for todays match. 12 FUTURE A’S STAR!

Noah Fawcett, U14’s & Samuel Whitbread School

1 How long have you been playing rugby, Noah? I have been playing rugby for just over 5 years. I started when contact was first introduced to our age group.

2 What position do you play? My preferred position is to play hooker, but I can also play loose-head prop. I prefer loose head over tighthead as I like to be able to get away from the scrum quicker and get back into the game.

3 Who is your favourite player? My favourite player is Joe Bercis because I like his style of play and the attitude he has towards the game. I also think its good when he and others from the first team sometimes come to help with our training sessions.

4 What team do you support? I support Ampthill but I also enjoy watching the Saints.

5. What do you want to do when you grow up? My dream is to be able to play rugby professionally. I would love to play for my home club Ampthill. I would also be honoured to play for England one day. If I wasn’t a rugby player I would like to be……………No I will be a rugby player!

1881 – Nick Stevenson

Ampthill 1881 come into the this Zoo One division as defending champions. Coach Alan Brown is back for another season. Newcomers to the league Rosslyn Park, pushed Ampthill to the final minute of the game in a 19-19 draw. Wimbledon were next to push the champions close but experience getting the 1881 over the line to win 12-10. A friendly away to Coventry and the 1881 were starting to find a rhythm by winning 40-33 on the new 4G pitch recently installed at Coventry. A first bonus point win came against Richmond Saxons 35-19. Ampthill having been on the road for all of their games, look forward to welcoming Esher.

Phil Lane and Matt Burke have come out of retirement to be a part of the squad. Last season’s academy graduates Pierce Holland and Adam Shelly are learning the ropes of senior rugby, while Liam Everitt’s boot keeps on kicking important goals.

Jets – John Cresswell

A tough start to life in Zoo League 2 for the Jets and we’ve been marginally on the wrong end of results in our first two fixtures. Starting against (!) at home we took a 26-0 lead only for Irish to show their class and come back to snatch victory 36-37. Last weekend we travelled to Bracknell and again the boys demonstrated an ability to compete at this level before losing a very close contest 39-33 against a strong defensive unit in Bracknell. A well-earned rest for the boys today before we go again next week at Bury St Edmunds and then Ealing Trailfinders the week after.

Extras – Liam Duffin

Despite some results going against the Extras, performances have been positive. Now tested in the top flight of Herts & Middlesex merit tables after last season’s promotion, the Extras have found themselves just on the wrong side of the scoreline in some close encounters. When the fixtures came out at the beginning of the season, matches against ONs, Tring and Bedford Ath included the first four games meant that they were straight in at the deep end. A victory away to Hertford was followed by losses to Athletic, Tring and ONs. More wins will come as the new look back line gels together.

16 Vets – David Wheeler

Like other elite rugby, our season has also started late this year. Our first match was cancelled late as the opposition could not field a team. Our second match was cancelled when several chaps were injured playing for the 5ths and we suffered absences due to the start of the World Cup. We are playing in the East Mids Vets Cup against Bedford Swifts this Saturday and I hope this will give us a positive result. We have been making up for the lack of fixtures with social activities. I would invite anyone reading the program who still yearns for a run out to contact us immediately! I am still waiting for Messrs Turner and Lavery to turn up. Mark says he will every time I ask him but that is normally quite late in the evening.

LADIES & GIRLS UPDATE

Ampthill Ladies formed this season after a successful 6 years of growing the girls game under the stewardship of Ian Scarr and Gloria Mills.

The women and girls section is now thriving due to the efforts of all the coaches, players and parents with U11, U13, U15 and U18 girls teams playing locally and nationally in the RFU Cup.

The women play in the Inner Warrior Series South East North and have reached the semi-final of the East Midlands Cup in February due to a favourable draw.

All of the teams are always looking for new players of all abilities to join the squads. Ladies training is 7pm - 9pm on Wednesdays and Girls from 6pm - 7.30pm on Thursdays. Matches take place on Sunday afternoon. Please contact [email protected] for details.
