AMPTHILL V. NOTTINGHAM RUGBY 12TH OCTOBER 2019 KICK OFF 3PM PRIMARY PARTNER SENIOR PARTNERS Primary Partner: Ampthill & District Community Rugby Club Limited Senior Partners: Dillingham Park, Woburn St, Ampthill, Bedford, MK45 2HX www.ampthillrufc.com Tel: 01525 403303 Vat Reg No. 196 7536 11 Registered in England and Wales 00629333 Saturday 12th October 2019 Ampthill & District RUFC v Nottingham Rugby WELCOME Chairman’s welcome to Nottingham Rugby Club A very warm welcome to the players, management, guests and supporters of Nottingham Rugby Club to Dillingham Park for their first ever competitive fixture. We sincerely hope that Nottingham enjoy the day, our humble facilities and traditional rugby hospitality. This is our first foray into the Green King IPA Championship. Our visitors are seasoned professionals having played at this level of competition for many years. They finished eighth in the league last year placing them in the top 20 clubs in the Country, so our task this afternoon is huge. Nottingham went down last week at the Bay to Cornish Pirates 42 – 7 in the Championship Cup. Head Coach Neil Fowkes gave his full squad the chance of a run out in the Cup but make no mistake a full-strength Nottingham will be on the paddock to face Ampthill. Ampthill 1st XV have played a couple of tricky games, namely Coventry and former Cup Champions, Ealing, before a really great afternoon last Saturday at near neighbours, Bedford RFC. Ampthill played well defensively and scored four great tries for a bonus point win. The evening celebrations saw a couple of shandies consumed in the marquee by the A’s faithful. This was a historic victory, our first against Bedford in a competitive fixture. This means a lot to the team and the club. We can reflect on this at the end of the season, but this will be a hollow victory if we are unable to pick up points in the Championship. In the best rugby tradition, I hope the day is very enjoyable to all our visitors and you leave having tasted good rugby, Tracy’s ARUFC meat pies and Bex’s beers. The 1881’s winning Zoo 1 for the first time in their history, beating Richmond by 2 points to the title; the Jets had another fantastic year completing a League and Cup double and also a Champions Cup which were a play off between Herts and Beds Merit table and Herts and Middlesex Merit Table. The Jets have applied to join the Midlands Reserve Team League which should give them far more competitive rugby. The Extra’s won Herts Middlesex Merit Table 2 but missed out by two points in the Cup final to achieving a double. The 5th team were probably the most unlucky side in the Club finishing runner up in the Banana Bread Beer Merit Table just missing out on promotion but beating the top team Sharnbrook’s 1st Team both home and away. They missed out the league purely because the opposition didn’t turn up on the last weekend of the year. Only one word to describe that …….gutted! An exciting time lies ahead with Bedford Blues, Cornish Pirates and Ealing Trail Finders and potentially Newcastle Falcons coming to Dillingham Park next season. Thank you to all Clubs Supporters and Club Members who have stuck with us as we have gained our 5th promotion in the last 12 seasons. Without your help and support we would not have achieved this success. Mark Lavery Director of Rugby TODAY’S OPPONENTS Nottingham Rugby Club The club was established circa 1877 by Alexander Birkin after returning from Rugby School, where he was introduced to the sport. The Birkin family later purchased the land at Ireland Avenue that would be the home of the club until 2006. The club’s heyday was in the late 1980s with a number of top international players representing the first XV. These included Simon Hodgkinson, Rob Andrew, Dusty Hare and Brian Moore (also a Lion) representing England and Chris Gray representing Scotland. The advent of professionalism in 1995-96 saw the Green & Whites fall on hard times and the first XV narrowly avoided relegation to the regional divisions in 2002–03. The club has bounced back since then and was promoted into National League One in 2003–04. The club finished a creditable 7th in 2005–06 before leaving Ireland Avenue after 102 years. Nicknamed the Green & Whites, in reference to the club’s kit, the first XV play at Lady Bay, The club has recently made a move from Meadow Lane, the home ground of Notts County to Lady Bay in West Bridgford, outside Nottingham. They previously played at Ireland Avenue until the end of the 2005–06 season. Head Coach, Neil Fowkes, needs no introduction. Having devoted his entire playing career to Nottingham Rugby, Fowkes has been part of the team for over 30 years. Nottingham lock Tom Holmes has been named club captain for the 2019/20 season. Tom began playing rugby for local side Sandbach RFC, leading to him being scouted by Premiership giants Sale Sharks at the age of just 16. He then represented England at U16 and U18 level until a severe ankle injury left him on the sidelines for six months at U20 level. Holmes bounced back however, going on to play for Sedgley Park and, after resigning from the Sharks, joining Rotherham Titans in 2014, where he made a respectable 52 starts before leaving Clifton Lane for Lady Bay. 5 Extensive experience of major Electrical and Mechanical installations in domestic, industrial and commercial sector environments, Wheeler Electrical Ltd have traded in the Ampthill area since 1961. The Blues turned Pink for the day in support of the McMillan Cancer trust and they didn’t have the ideal start to the day with a couple of players failing fitness tests on the morning of the match. The first forty minutes were separated by a Kwaku Asiedu try and a Louis Grimoldby penalty against a Dann Temm try. A loose kick let Rich Lane punish the A’s with a break down the right-hand side that led to a Teem try and a 5 v 8 half time score With the elements and the slope in Paul Turners sides favour the A’s started to turn the screw and kept the pressure on the home side. The A’s had spent the week working hard on defensive drills led by forwards player-coach Dave Ward and this proved critical when the Blues back line came probing the A’s defensive system but the A’s held firm in the face of the onslaught. After gradually taking back control, an inch-perfect kick by Bordoli was regathered by Baker who found Jarryd Sage in support who dotted the ball down and fly-half Grimoldby converted for the A’s to lead 5 v 15.
