Three hundred and thirty-five days since our last games, Ampthill and Bedford Blues are excited to announce two friendlies ahead of the 2021 Greene King IPA Championship season. The last year has been very difficult for society as a whole and the ongoing pandemic has put both Clubs under enormous financial pressure. A seventy five percent reduction in RFU funding has been compounded by little or no income for nearly twelve months! We are grateful to our members, supporters, the local business community and the wider #RugbyFamily for their recent support. Without this we would be not be able to take our place in the Championship this season. The two sides contested three very competitive games last season but with both squads experiencing significant changes these games will provide an opportunity both to try and build some chemistry in their respective playing squads. Ampthill Head Coach, Paul Turner comments “I think both Clubs are in the same position with their return to play and it will be a valuable hit out for both teams. We enjoy an excellent relationship with Bedford Blues and it’s a great opportunity for all our supporters to see what both new squads look like with both games being streamed live.” The games will take place on Sat 20th Feb at Dillingham Park and then Sat 27th Feb at Goldington Road. FORMER BLUES PLAYERS 2010-11 we finished 2nd in the Championship only losing 22-23 to Worcester in the play-off semi-final. We had also reached the Final of the British and where are they now? Irish Cup after beating Worcester 43- 27 in the semi. Six days later we lost narrowly 14-17 to Bristol in the Marie Davies Final. A memorable season! Following my treasured time at the Blues I moved to Exeter Chiefs for two seasons, where I revelled in kicking tutorials and playing alongside a young crop of now current English internationals including Myles dorrian Henry Slade, Jack Nowell and Luke Cowan-Dickie. We sincerely hope that Nottingham enjoy the day, our humble facilities and traditional rugby hospitality. This is our first foray into the Green King IPA Championship. Our visitors are seasoned professionals having played at this level of competition for many years. They finished eighth in the league last year placing them in the top 20 clubs in the Country, so our task this afternoon is huge. Nottingham went down last week at the Bay to Cornish Pirates 42 – 7 in the Championship Cup. Head Coach Neil Fowkes gave his full squad the chance of a run out in the Cup but make no mistake a full-strength Nottingham will be on the paddock to face Ampthill. Ampthill 1st XV have played a couple of tricky games, namely Coventry and former Cup Champions, Ealing, before a really great afternoon last Saturday at near neighbours, Bedford RFC. Ampthill played well defensively and scored four great tries for a bonus point win. The evening celebrations saw a couple of shandies consumed in the marquee by the A’s faithful.
