Ampthill V. Bedford Blues 14Th December 2019 Kick Off 1.45Pm PROGRAMME £2 AMPTHILL V. BEDFORD BLUES 14TH DECEMBER 2019 KICK OFF 1.45PM PrimaryPRIMARY Partner PARTNER: SENIOR PARTNERS MATCH SPONSOR Ampthill & District Community Rugby Club Limited Senior Partners: Dillingham Park, Woburn St, Ampthill, Bedford, MK45 2HX www.ampthillrufc.com Tel: 01525 403303 Vat Reg No. 196 7536 11 Registered in England and Wales 00629333 WELCOME Chairman’s welcome to Bedford Blues It gives me great pleasure to welcome our neighbours ‘Bedford Blues’ to Dillingham Park today for the Green King IPA Championship Cup. We sincerely hope that the officials, players and supporters enjoy our warm hospitality. This is likely to be the biggest gate at the club for a rugby fixture, so please bear with us if our services are not as slick as those of Goldington Road. We have put on additional food and drink outlets, a small temporary stand and of course the second marquee for a three-course lunch and social event following the final whistle. We hope that Blues supporters enjoy our post-match hospitality whatever the final score. And now to the rugby!! As the new kids on the block we have clearly found some of our fixtures to be somewhat challenging this year, however, last week we ‘clicked’ in the Grange Bowl. Our tackling was better, in attack we caused our visitors problems and generally the heart in the side was huge. All of this created a really terrific performance. It was disappointing to see so few people witnessing this spirited showing but probably the combination of Christmas preparations and our visitors bringing only a small support may have contributed to that. Today is another day!! Bedford will no doubt want to show their class on the paddock. They have a point to prove having had a couple of poor performances, by their high standards, over the past couple of weeks losing to Ealing Trailfinders and Coventry. With progress to the next stage of the Greene King IPA Championship Cup being a distant memory for both Ampthill and Bedford, both sides will be playing for pride today. At the end of the game I hope to see you all in the marquees for a beverage. Over the past few weeks we have been honoured by supporters embracing our home setting commenting about how lovely it is to visit “a real traditional rugby club” and that’s exactly what we are. Long may that continue. Oh, and by the way, there is the small matter of a league meeting on Boxing Day at Goldington Road to add to your diary!! Have a relaxing Christmas and I wish you all a very Happy New Year. The game was played at Twickenham in front of almost 18,000 spectators. 7 TWO TO WATCH Josh Buggea - Back Row It’s been a whirlwind Blues career Buggea who signed for Bedford at the beginning of the 2014/15 season from Premiership outfit Worcester Warriors. The back rower quickly established himself in the Blues team with his drive and determination as well as a superb skill set being recognised and appreciated by his teammates who voted him the Player’s Player of the Season for 2015/16. PROUD TO SUPPORT Buggea was a student at Bablake School before moving AMPTHILL RUFC on to Hartpury college. He played junior rugby for Cheshunt before joining the Saracens Academy. He then moved to Ireland to take up a place in the Munster Academy where he continued to flourish. James has played for Irish Exiles U18, Munster U20 and Ireland U20 (v Munster U20); he was part of the Ireland U20s 6 Nations training squad, the Ireland 7s training squad, playing for the Ireland 7 against Spain, and appeared for Munster in the B&I Cup against Rotherham. Having signed for the Blues, Lennon came under the Tutelage of Lee Dickson at Goldington Road and has continued to expand his game significantly. The pitch looked a picture when bathed in occasional sunshine while underfoot conditions were excellent. Ealing’s selection reflected the importance that the cup holders place on the Championship Cup and they began very well, as Amps allowed the kick off to bounce leading to visitors possession and pressure on A’s defence. A few phases later and the visitors eighthman, Kieran Murphy crashed over wide on the left in the 2nd minute, fly half Craig Willis converting. The home side were under pressure for the next 10 minutes until a penalty was kicked just inside Ealing’s 22 on the left.

You will probably know that Coventry have been here during the National 1 campaign but last year they played in the Green King IPA Championship finishing in 8th position. Coventry is not too far from Ampthill, so we hope to see a good following making the trip down to add to what is bound to be a great atmosphere. I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome the Mayor of Ampthill, Mr Ian Titman, the Lady Mayoress, Ms Maggie Fuller and the Mayor’s honourable guests to our club lunch. I hope you enjoy the day. Our last fixture against the visitors was at the Butts Park Arena where we were given a bit of a rugby lesson. The final score was 64-26 with the home side throwing the ball around and attacking from all over the park. Let us hope our defence holds firm today during the league encounter. Coventry currently lie in a very creditable 3rd place in the league, having won four matches and drawn one (two points behind Cornish Pirates in the 2nd spot).

We sincerely hope that Nottingham enjoy the day, our humble facilities and traditional rugby hospitality. This is our first foray into the Green King IPA Championship. Our visitors are seasoned professionals having played at this level of competition for many years. They finished eighth in the league last year placing them in the top 20 clubs in the Country, so our task this afternoon is huge. Nottingham went down last week at the Bay to Cornish Pirates 42 – 7 in the Championship Cup. Head Coach Neil Fowkes gave his full squad the chance of a run out in the Cup but make no mistake a full-strength Nottingham will be on the paddock to face Ampthill. Ampthill 1st XV have played a couple of tricky games, namely Coventry and former Cup Champions, Ealing, before a really great afternoon last Saturday at near neighbours, Bedford RFC. Ampthill played well defensively and scored four great tries for a bonus point win. The evening celebrations saw a couple of shandies consumed in the marquee by the A’s faithful.

AMPTHILL & DISTRICT COMMUNITY RUFC End of Season Team Reports 2014 / 2015 Marshall of Bedford END OF SEASON REPORT 2014-2015 The only way to describe the season for the Club as a whole is absolutely fantastic at all levels! The 1st XV have won their second promotion in 3 seasons and go to the heady heights of National 1 which next year will mean the visit to Dillingham Park of Plymouth Albion, Rosslyn Park, Blackheath, Richmond and our old friends from Darlington Mowden Park. This promotion was won by winning the National 1 play-o match at Dillingham Park on Saturday 2nd May in front of a crowd of nearly 2000 people against Bishops Stortford. A huge thank you to all volunteers and attendees for what proved to be an exceptional and historic day for the Club. In the words of the Rugby paper “for a tiny Club (like Ampthill) to be at this level is truly astonishing”. The 1881’s have produced a credible performance in the Zoo 1 League nishing 7th overall in an extremely tough and competitive league. This gives us some idea of what potentially lies in store for the 1st team next season. The Extra’s for the rst time in their history competed in the Bombardier League; the top merit table in the East Midlands and nished really well with a 3rd place at rst time of asking; a fantastic result. The 4th team competed in the Eagle IPA League and have won their 4th promotion in 5 years. They now have the tricky situation of potentially having to play in a dierent division of the East Midlands due to the Extra’s already occupying the top merit table in the area.

Head Coach, Paul Turner “This is a very tough draw for our boys who have only just resumed training under Phase 2 and not played any games since March 14th last year. The first two rounds of the competition being against full time professional teams who have been training full time and already been playing friendlies against Premiership sides, plus competing in the Trailfinders Cup will be a challenge. That said the boys are excited by the prospect and will just be pleased to cross the white line against teams of this calibre again.
