Reporting to the Director of Strategic Planning and Policy, the Public Affairs Officer is responsible for public relations and communication links between the Office of the Languages Commissioner and the public, Government of Nunavut (GN) and its boards and agencies and the Legislative Assembly. In addition, The position is responsible for the creation and maintenance of public awareness campaigns on the responsibilities of the Office of the Languages Commissioner and should enhance the visibility of the office and make the public sensitive and aware of the it’s initiatives of the language issues in general.

The incumbent provides relevant official languages information to a wide audience which includes the GN, its boards and agencies, the public, Francophone community and organizations. As part of an overall communications strategy, the Officer provides critical support to the languages commissioner’s office to ensure the mandate of the organization is known and understood and contributes to enhance the ability of the organization to promote awareness and to gain public and political support for the Languages recommendations. The position is accountable to the Office of the Languages Commissioner for developing and implementing a comprehensive communications strategy and developing and disseminating a variety of public relations initiatives that support the mandate of the Languages Commissioner Office. Furthermore, the incumbent is responsible in assisting in coordinating the production of the Languages Commissioner’s Annual report and provides media monitoring. The incumbent may need to travel for various functions to other communities.

An in-depth knowledge of public relations and communications are needed along with strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills. The ability to effectively create presentations and have good facilitation skills is needed. Excellent knowledge of computers and databases and publishing programs are needed.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a recognized Degree in Communications or Journalism and two (2) to three (3) years’ experience in Journalism/Public Relations and Corporate relations.

Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are , , English and French. Proficiency in two of the official languages is required for this position.

Knowledge of Inuit language, communities, culture, land and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit is an asset.
