The Office of the Languages Commissioner (OLC) safeguards the rights, status and privileges of Nunavut’s official languages specified under the new Official Languages Act and the Language Protection Act. The Investigation/Research Officer-Inuktut is the primary point of contact for Inuit language speakers for the Office of the Languages Commissioner. The position is the primary source of information for the Languages on the activities, events and concerns of the Inuit language speakers. Communications, research and investigation activities for this position are time sensitive. The position will work with the private and public bodies to safeguard the language rights of Nunavummiut.

Reporting to the Director of Strategic Planning & Policy, the responsibilities include recording and conducting concerns brought forward to the OLC and plan investigations and prepare reports on the results along with recommendations for a resolution. The incumbent will analyze any possibility of systemic issue and monitor compliance of the Nunavut Territorial institutions, assist with public consultations and public outreach initiatives, specifically targeting Inuit language speakers along with preparing speeches on issues related to Inuit language rights or Inuit language speakers. Furthermore, the incumbent develops an investigation report to be included in the annual report and assist in the development of promotional materials directed at Inuit language speakers.

An in-depth knowledge of the new Official Languages Acts, the Inuit Language Protection Act and include the spirit and intent of the acts along with knowledge of national trends and legal requirement for official languages are required. The ability to effectively conduct interviews, presentations is needed along with facilitation skills. Communication skills such as, verbal and written are needed. Proficiency in the use of computer and strong word processing, presentation and email software skills are needed.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a Bachelor of Commence or Bachelor of Arts in Indigenous Studies and five (5) years of related work experience.

Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are , , English and French. Proficiency in two of the official languages is required for this position.

Knowledge of Inuit language, communities, culture, land and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit is an asset.
