The event will have a special atmosphere, as just a couple days before 20th Biathlon Masters International Championships kick off, biggest biathlon stars will be competing on the same tracks at BMW IBU World Cup 8. The stadium also welcomed World Championships Biathlon in 2015. Kontiolahti is one of those biathlon venues, where you can always count on winter conditions in March; I am sure there will be a lot of snow with temperatures possibly dropping far below zero. Finland is a country with long tradition of biathlon, it is a motherland of legendary World Champions: Kalevi Huuskonen, Juhani Suutarinen, Heikki Ikola, Paavo Puurunen and a contemporary biathlon star Kaisa Mäkärainen who brightens up the biathlon sky of today. Biathlon is a sport that has conquered hearts of all ages. We have enthusiasts competing in our recent series of Junior Cups, the future stars of biathlon. Biathlon Masters International Championships participants have always had biathlon in their life; they deserve the highest praise and respect for competing. This event is just another proof that your age is not how old you are, it is all about your feeling and enthusiasm. Promoting biathlon for all nations, all age groups and both genders is priority of the IBU. We would like to see it develop in all parts of the world, not only at professional level but also for amateur competitors. It is very rewarding to see such age categories as men 70+ and women 60+ in the program. Staying fit, healthy and sport improve quality of life, doing biathlon in your region creates feeling of belonging and sense of community. I hope you take advantage of being in this region to get cultural experience and do some ice-bathing and snowshoeing in the city of Joensuu and its surroundings. I wish you exciting competitions and wonderful wintery biathlon weather! Anders Besseberg IBU President 3 Dear participants of the 20th Jubilee Biathlon Masters International Championships On behalf of the organizing committee I warmly welcome you all to the 20th Biathlon Masters International Championships. A record number of biathletes are competing: 192 participants of 13 nations and even 34 female contestants. During the 19 years our biathlon center has been renewed quite a lot. We hosted World Championships here in 1999 and 2015 and now we can ensure Masters Championships good circumstances, wintry tracks and experienced organization. The aim of this event is to gather together those who are interested in competing in biathlon. Once a year we can meet old friends and have a good time in Kontiolahti. It is also rewarding to keep fit and healthy and that will motivate older age groups to train biathlon. March 2017 is a real biathlon super month in Kontiolahti, three big international competitions. First the IBU Cup and right after that we hosted the BMW IBU World Cup 8 which was finished a few days ago, on the 12th of March. This jubilee Masters is now the third big event in a row. We are pleased that the IBU appreciates this competition. In the same way the Municipality of Kontiolahti and the city of Joensuu are our partners and sponsor this event. In honour of the Masters Jubilee Championships the stone company NunnaUuni, which is North Karelian family business and is best known of its high-quality heat-storing soapstone fireplaces has made a souvenir of North Karelian soap stone for each competitor, a memento of this 20th competition. We thank NunnaUuni for this support. I wish everyone an enjoyable stay in Kontiolahti and Joensuu! Biathlon for all ages, Heart in Biathlon! Warmly welcome! • 2014 Winter Olympic Competing Nations ALBANIA (ALB)
2014 Winter Olympic Competing Nations We list below detailed historial Olympic information for every IOC Member Nation that has previously competed at the Olympic Winter Games and that will compete in Sochi, as of 27 January 2014. There appear to be 88 qualified NOCs that have met IF quota requirements as of 24 January, and have accepted them (the previous record for a Winter Olympics is 82 in 2010 at Vancouver). Unfortunately, after reallocation of some quotas, only the skiing federation (FIS) has published the final quotas as of 26 January. We have tried to list below the sports for which each NOC has qualified but there is a small chance, with reallocations, that there may be minor differences in the final allocation by sport. There are seven nations that will compete in Sochi that have never before competed at the Olympic Winter Games – Dominica, Malta, Paraguay, Timor-Leste (East Timor), Togo, Tonga, and Zimbabwe. Their factsheets have been published previously on olympstats.com – see http://olympstats.com/2014/01/23/new-winter-olympic-nations-for-sochi/, which came out on 23 January. One problem nation is listed below and that is DPR Korea (North). They have not qualified any athletes for Sochi. They had the 1st and 2nd reserves for pairs figure skating but those do not appear to have been chosen by final reallocation of quota sports by the International Skating Union (ISU). However, yesterday (26 January), DPR Korea has petitioned the IOC for redress to allow them to have Olympic athletes compete in Sochi. So they are included below but it is unknown if they will compete.
