    CHOOSING A BIBLE TRANSLATION Reading, studying and praying through the Bible are an essential part of the Christian faith. The Bible teaches us about who God is; the purpose of human life; and how we should live in relation to God, to other people and to the created world. But more than just a source of information, beliefs, and practices, when we read the Bible with faith it becomes one of the key places where we encounter God. Indeed, when we pray for God’s Spirit to bring the ancient words alive, we are promised an encounter with God’s living Word – Jesus himself. All of this makes choosing which Bible translation to use an important decision. The two main things that go into this decision is how faithful it is to the original Hebrew and Greek Biblical manuscripts (so it will communicate what the Bible really says), and whether it’s easy to understand and enjoyable to read (so that you’ll actually want to read it). Picking a good translation means balancing the two – some translations focus on being as literal as possible (word-for-word), while others focus on taking the ideas spoken in the ancient languages and putting them into easily understandable modern English (thought-for-thought). Below I’ve listed four translations which are among the most common ones used today. NRSV (New Revised Standard Version) The NRSV is a mainly word- for-word translation of the Bible that is the most commonly used translation in university level Biblical studies.     CHAPTER EIGHT THE TEXTUAL BASIS OF MODERN TRANSLATIONS OF THE HEBREW BIBLE One is led to believe that two distinct types of modern translation of the Hebrew Bible exist: scholarly translations included in critical commentaries, and translations prepared for believing communities, Christian and Jewish. In practice, however, the two types of translation are now rather similar in outlook and their features need to be scrutinized. Scholarly translations included in most critical commentaries are eclectic, that is, their point of departure is MT, but they also draw much on all other textual sources and include emendations when the known textual sources do not yield a satisfactory reading. In a way, these translations present critical editions of the Hebrew Bible, since they reflect the critical selection process of the available textual evidence. These translations claim to reflect the Urtext of the biblical books, even if this term is usually not used explicitly in the description of the translation. The only difference between these translations and a critical edition of the texts in the original languages is that they are worded in a modern language and usually lack a critical apparatus defending the text-critical choices. The publication of these eclectic scholarly translations reflects a remarkable development. While there is virtually no existing reconstruction of the Urtext of the complete Bible in Hebrew (although the original text of several individual books and chapters has been reconstructed),1 such reconstructions do exist in translation.     HEBREW MATTHEW AND MATTHEAN COMMUNITIES by DEBRA SCOGGINS (Under the Direction of David S. Williams) ABSTRACT Shem-Tob’s Even Bohan contains a version of the Gospel of Matthew in Hebrew. By comparing canonical Matthew to Hebrew Matthew, the present study shows that Hebrew Matthew displays tendencies to uphold the law, support the election of Israel, exalt John the Baptist, and identify Jesus as the Messiah during his ministry. These tendencies suggest that Hebrew Matthew reflects a less redacted Matthean tradition than does canonical Matthew. The conservative tendencies of Hebrew Matthew reflect a Jewish-Christian community with characteristics in common with other early Jewish Christianities. The significance of studying such communities lies in their importance for “the partings of the ways” between early Judaisms and early Christianities.     Tender Mercies in English Scriptural Idiom and in Nephi’s Record Miranda Wilcox Nephi records divine beings inviting humans to participate in the sacred story of salvation and humans petitioning divine beings for aid in their mortal affliction. The first chapter of Nephi’s story introduces linguistic, textual, and narrative questions about how humans should engage with and produce holy books that memorialize these divine- human relations in heaven and on earth. For Nephi, a central element of these relationships is “tender mercies” (1 Nephi 1:20). What are tender mercies? How do the Lord’s tender mercies make the chosen faithful “mighty, even unto the power of deliverance”? Nephi’s striking phrase has become popular in Latter-day Saint discourse since Elder David A. Bednar preached of the “tender mercies of the Lord” at general conference in April 2005.     Mathew Carey’s Douay-Rheims Bible by Nicholas Mario Bruno1 Penniless and exiled, a young printer, disguised as a woman to avoid arrest by the English, sailed to Philadelphia with the Marquis de Lafayette. When the ship arrived in Philadelphia, Lafayette introduced Carey to George Washington and other influential Americans who lent him $400 to set up a printing shop. This young printer, Mathew Carey, would be very influential in early American printing. This paper will examine his life and some of his most influential work both as an American printer, dedicated to creating a nationalistic literary identity, and his work as a Catholic, printing the Mathew Carey Bible during an important era for the Catholic Church in America. Background of Mathew Carey Although known mainly for his work in America, Carey was not born in America; he was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1760. He started his career as a journalist in Ireland. At the age of 19, Carey advocated the repeal of the British Penal Code against Irish Catholics in an anonymous pamphlet. When the British government offered a reward for the author of the pamphlet, Carey fled for France where he met Benjamin Franklin. After a year in France, Carey returned to Ireland but again got into trouble with political authorities – this time for his views on economic policy. Carey, who supported tariffs, published a cartoon of a British official who opposed a tariff bill being hanged for treason. The result of his efforts is now known as the Joseph Smith Translation (JST).1 Only about one-third of the verses that the JST changed are included in the LDS edition of the King James Version (KJV);2 Robert J.
