CRAIG’S STORY In 2014, a total of 300 Youth and Government participants were engaged statewide. Each local group travels to Hartford at the end of the legislative session for three days to spend the weekend YMCA Youth & Government at the Capitol participating in a full mock government experience in the House and the Senate. Our Leading Youth to Bright Futures Waterbury delegation has had back-to-back officers elected two years in a row, something I’m so proud of.

“I first came to the Y by volunteering for Game Time Hoops several years ago. SOULLIERE FAMILY STORY BONNIE’S STORY Looking for More Than a Gym Building Relationships

“My family has been members of the Y since 2007. We joined the Y right after we moved to Waterbury “I’ve been a member of the Greater Waterbury YMCA for a little over two years now. My son had been to help our family lead healthier lives and to become a bigger part of the local community. involved with the Y’s Youth Triathlon Program a few years ago and would come home raving about the YMCA. I saw a Y flyer for a beginner triathlon swim program and decided that I would sign up. I was a wreck because I didn’t know anyone and was afraid. That class completely changed my life! Not only did I learn how to swim but I met new people that I now consider life time friends and they have led me to new adventures.

When I come to the Y it’s like a social gathering. I work out and catch up with friends. It’s my happy place. The Y has improved my family’s overall health and we have all connected with new friends there. There is never a time that I don’t run into someone I know. I love to swim, run and meet up with friends for strength training. The Y has become a lifestyle for me physically and socially. If I hadn’t joined the Y I would not have stepped out of my comfort zone, I wouldn’t have the great friends that I have now and I’d likely still be stuck in my same old routine.

What I love most about the Y is that all of the staff are friendly and helpful. I love that there are We all love the Y. Through the Wellness Center and programs such as Ready, Set, Go, we have learned all kinds of people of all races and cultures, young and old. I see an older lady in the mornings and ways to lead healthier lives. The boys have learned healthy habits that they will take with them we both love UCONN girls basketball, so we always have something to talk about. The morning throughout their lives including the anti-smoking lessons at afterschool, keeping active by playing in lifeguard always asks where I’ve been if he hasn’t seen me for a while. The atmosphere at the Y is the gym and being a part of the Rod Dixon Kid’s Marathon and the anti-bullying campaign that they so positive and energetic. People are always friendly and happy to be at my YMCA! attended this past year. The Y offers so much for everyone, it is hard not to find something to join or enjoy. We look forward to the weekends when we can all go to the Y together as a family.

Being active on a more regular basis has helped everyone in our family. My husband and I fit in workouts before and/or after work to ward off any stress from a long day of work. The boys love running around the gym and playground after sitting for a full day at school, releasing all of their energy in a positive way. The boys attend afterschool daily and camp every summer and have made valued friendships with kids that they look forward to seeing every day. After living in Waterbury for three years, we considered moving out of town, and for a while, out of state. However, knowing that we would no longer have the Waterbury Y as a part of our lives was honestly a motivating force behind us buying a house in Waterbury instead. We love this city – and the Y plays a large role in why we love this city. What I love most about the Y is everything and everyone! There was a period of about two years when Jeremy and I were unable to work out at the Y. This was tough because we missed it. When I returned one day, I was walking out of the women’s locker room and a staff member who hadn’t seen me in two years stopped what she was doing and gave me the biggest hug. There was no better feeling than at that moment, when it was confirmed that the Y community is strong and caring.

PATRICK’S STORY One of the things that I enjoy about the Y is that it has given me the opportunity to give back through volunteerism. I wanted to help anyone interested in running, and I’ve been able to work Running and Leadership with YMCA runners in Team 13.1 and the running programs. I celebrated my 50th birthday by going on a 50 mile run from Waterbury. I started at 5am and ended around 5pm, with my wife “I came to the Y 11 years ago when I was looking to pass a physical fitness test to become a helping me with snacks along the way. I’ve completed 27 marathons and 2 ultra marathons. corrections officer. I had never run before that. Ironically, I never got the job, but I gained a lot I love coming to the Y to meet friends and I love motivating others to achieve their goals. more through my experiences with the Y. I ran my first race at the Y in 2004 (Fischang-Cicchetti Memorial Run) and actually won a cash prize for its 25th anniversary that year. What I didn’t realize was that I would become an elite runner for my age and continue on to be a long-distance I am inspired to mentor and help other young people at the Y. runner even completing the Marathon among others. Thus began my love for running. Before I became involved with the Y, I used to always run alone. Running can be a solitary sport. Now that I’ve joined the Y Triathlon Club I hardly ever run alone anymore. I’m not just running for The Y changed me. myself, I’m running for everyone else. Before joining I weighed over 200 pounds. Getting exercise through running has made me a better person, a better husband and a more efficient and clear-headed employee. I’m actually a Rastafarian, and part of that culture is maintaining dread locks. When I wanted to join the Tri Club and start swimming at the Y, I realized that my dreads were holding me back. My hair was a foundational part of my religious beliefs, but I also wanted to learn how to swim, so I prayed YMCA Living Our Cause Updates on it. My best friend drowned nearly 30 years ago, so I concluded that it was worth making the change so that I could learn to swim and work towards the goal of triathlon with the YMCA. I’m happy to report that I’m swimming regularly and truly enjoy it. The Y’s Berkeley Warner Recreation Center continues to serve over 40 youth in after school programming through community funding. Family events, field days, literacy programs and summer lunch programs have been added to the center to expand the resources available.

Race4Chase has grown to provide youth triathlon programming to not only the Greater Waterbury YMCA, but seven other CT regional Y’s through continued funding from the Chase Michael Anthony Kowalski Foundation.

YMCA Camp Mataucha and YMCA Camp Oakasha each experienced record enrollment in 2014 and the Annual Polar Plunge provided more assistance for camp through the Meghan Beebe Camp Scholarship Fund.

YMCA School Readiness and School Age Before & After School Programs Through 16 centers, YMCA School Readiness and YMCA School Age Child Care Programs served a total of 350 children daily.

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA has served over 100 cancer survivors to date with the graduating classes of 2014.

The Y is, and always will be, dedicated to building healthy, confident, connected and secure children, adults, families and communities. Through youth, senior, adult and family programs the Y builds bridges in our community where there were roadblocks before. We are more than a gym, more than a pool. We’re here for good.

“ I think the leadership program is about developing youth skills and leadership. The reason why I wanted to be in the program is because I want to do something with my life. Ever since I joined the program, I’ve been keeping myself active and off the streets. This program is about helping our community and fellow citizens become leaders. Also, I like being in this club because it will better my future. I get to volunteer around the Y. It gives me job opportunities and college acceptance opportunities. It also gives me opportunities to better my community by helping kids at the YMCA. ”
