COURSE OUTLINE : AJ 128 Last Revised and Approved: 10/07/2010 CURRICULUM Subject Code and Course Number: AJ 128 Division : Business and Engineering Technology Course Title : USE OF FORCE Summarize the need/purpose/reason for this proposal SLOs (Student Learning Outcomes) 1. Explain the principles, use of force and its relationship to law enforcement. 2. Demonstrate the use of physical defensive tactics and its required applications in the law enforcement field. 3. Explain the use the force escalation and de-escalation chart in relationship to the officer's physical capabilities. 4. Explain and demonstrate what use of force means to the individual in a law enforcement situation. 5. Explain physical defensive tactics in a law enforcement situation. SPOs (Student Performance Objectives) 1. Illustrate how to use the personal weapons of the human body in defending oneself, i.e., fingers, elbow, knee, edge of hand, forearms, etc. 2. Describe and apply pressure to the vulnerable areas of the human body i.e., eyes, nose, mastoid, neck, solar plexus, kidneys, testes, instep, nerve areas, etc. 3. Illustrate how to break "choke hold" from front and rear. 4. Perform the basic "come along" and "throw" holds, i.e., armlock, twist lock,and rear wrist lock. 5. Apply techniques for use of baton, i.e., the jab, strike and blocking techniques. 6. Illustrate pistol, and other dangerous weapons, disarming methods from front and rear. 7. Provide rationale for means of transporting prisoners and insane persons including use of handcuffs and leg irons; as well as describe appropriate seating arrangements in vehicles while transporting such persons for maximum security. 8. Describe the appropriate restraining of prisoners and mentally ill persons. 9. Perform the basic skills necessary to qualify for law enforcement self-defense testing.
