Prof. Dr. Pelin Yoncacı Arslan September 2019, 190 pages The purpose of this work is to study the movie theater as a product of the architectural culture of the 20th century and to develop a comprehensive discourse which allows for an understanding and discussion of such spaces, their social and spatial conditions and meanings in different times and places. Starting from the very experience of the spectator, touching the topics of the historical and architectural formation of the space of public exhibition and the practice of moviegoing, finally a conversation between modernity, cinema and architecture is established in relation to the movie theater, looking specifically at three distinct periods of movie theater construction in the city of Ankara. The ‘space as a stage’ is introduced as a theoretical comprehensive approach which allows us to recognize the inherent agencies of the movie theater: the owner/manager, governance, the architect, architecture itself, the cinema industry, and the audience. By adopting this perspective, this case study undertakes the task of understanding how those elements intersected, gelled and mutated in the local case of Ankara. Keywords: Movie Theaters, Architectural History, Ankara, Modernity iv ÖZ BİR MİMARLIK TARİHİ OKUMASI: ANKARA’DAKİ SİNEMALAR KAYMAZ, Elif Yüksek Lisans, Mimarlık Tarihi Bölümü Tez Yöneticisi: Dr. Öğr. Turkey takes no back seat to the United States or any other country when it comes to claiming what doesn’t belong to it. Turkey’s acquisitive temerity leaves people open-mouthed in shock. Turkey is hands down the champion of grand identity theft. This should not come as a surprise to people who know that Ataturk published a three-volume history book which claimed all civilizations have their roots in Turkish culture. The “Famous Turkish Men” list on the Internet has 71 names. Of these only 21 are Turks. And of the 21 only novelist Orhan Pamuk can be considered a genuine celebrity. The Turkish contingent includes 22-year-old YouTube personality Orkun Isitmak and such high-profile global personalities as Berrypinklips, Emre Can, Arda Turan, Fehriye Evecn, Tuba Buykustun, Fatih Terim, and Bergnzar Korel. Although the list is titled “Famous Turkish Men”, it includes a number of actresses.

  • Starten Met Chanson
Belgen zoals o.a. Salvatore Adamo, Frank Michael, Marc Aryan, Jacques Brel of Fréderic François

  • French Pop Music Remakes in Turkey
French pop music remakes in Turkey A cognitive semiotic inquiry into cultural transfer Azize Güneş Supervisor: Göran Sonesson Centre for Languages and Literature, Lund University MA in Languages and Literature, Cognitive Semiotics SPVR01 Languages and Linguistics: Degree Project – Master’s (Two years) Thesis, 30 credits May 2017 Abstract In this thesis, the importation, transformation and distribution of French popular music in Turkey during the 20th century have been investigated as a case study of cultural transfer. By using theories and methods within a cognitive semiotic framework, this study provides an overview of the phenomenon of French pop music remakes in Turkey by accounting for the initial situation of communication of remade pop music through recorded materials, and by providing an analysis of the changes made to the songs when transformed from French to Turkish, as well as the linguistic meanings that were made available to the Turkish public in this process. Meaning making procedures in connection to pop music have been considered by analyzing components of pop music, the cognitive capacities of human beings to understand pop music, and procedures of cultural communication enabling the integration of new artefacts in a culture. According to the results of this thesis, 160 Turkish language remakes of songs originally performed in French have been produced and distributed in Turkey between 1961- 1991. The most concentrated period of production occurred during a 10-year period between 1967-1977, with a considerable peak in 1968-1969. Of the songs produced during the peak of 1968-1969, 25% account for the original French song lyrics either as “song translations” or “adaptations” of their original French versions, transferring linguistic meanings to the Turkish target culture.

An international competition was organized for the city's development plan in 1927, and Prof. Dr. Hermann Jansen’s plan won. Unfortunately, the plan wasn’t kept loyal in the following years; morphological deteriorations started to be observed in the city. In this paper, physical changes appeared so far have examined, structural and open spaces’ evolutions of the historical city have highlighted. Parks and gardens demonstrating adverse changes in both structural and plant design have explained via examples that they lost their identity so far. To halt this negative change, it is crucial to develop new policies to solve the problems by defining them well, to produce new regulations or to strengthen existing ones that respect the historic urban landscapes and cultural assets of the city, to solidify sanctions on this issue and create an impartial judicial unit against crimes committed to the city. IDEOLOGY IN URBAN SOUTH VIETNAM, 1950-1975 A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Notre Dame in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Tuan Hoang ______________________________ Wilson Miscamble, CSC, Director Graduate Program in History Notre Dame, Indiana April 2013 © Copyright by Tuan Hoang 2013 All rights reserved IDEOLOGY IN URBAN SOUTH VIETNAM, 1950-1975 Abstract by Tuan Hoang This dissertation addresses the subject of noncommunist political and cultural ideology in urban South Vietnam during 1954-1975. It contributes to the historiography of the Vietnam War, specifically on the long-neglected Republic of Vietnam (RVN) that has received greater attention in the last decade. The basic argument is that the postcolonial ideological vision of most urban South Vietnamese diverged greatly from that of the Vietnamese communist revolutionaries. This vision explains for the puzzling question on why the communist revolutionaries were far more effective in winning the minds and hearts of Vietnamese in countryside than in cities. At the same time, this vision was complicated by the uneasy relationship with the Americans. The dissertation examines four aspects in particular. First is the construction of anticommunism: Although influenced by Cold War bipolarity, anticommunism in urban South Vietnam was shaped initially and primarily by earlier differences about modernity and post-colonialism. It was intensified through intra-Vietnamese experiences of the First Indochina War. Tuan Hoang The second aspect is the promotion of individualism. Instead of the socialist person as advocated by communist revolutionaries, urban South Vietnamese promoted a bourgeois petit vision of the postcolonial person.
