Turkey takes no back seat to the United States or any other country when it comes to claiming what doesn’t belong to it. Turkey’s acquisitive temerity leaves people open-mouthed in shock. Turkey is hands down the champion of grand identity theft. This should not come as a surprise to people who know that Ataturk published a three-volume history book which claimed all civilizations have their roots in Turkish culture. The “Famous Turkish Men” list on the Internet has 71 names. Of these only 21 are Turks. And of the 21 only novelist Orhan Pamuk can be considered a genuine celebrity. The Turkish contingent includes 22-year-old YouTube personality Orkun Isitmak and such high-profile global personalities as Berrypinklips, Emre Can, Arda Turan, Fehriye Evecn, Tuba Buykustun, Fatih Terim, and Bergnzar Korel. Although the list is titled “Famous Turkish Men”, it includes a number of actresses. -

The Armenian Genocide, 1915
The Armenian Genocide, 1915 U ur Ümit Üngör ‘Either the Armenians would eliminate the Turks or the Turks would eliminate the Armenians. I didn’t hesitate for one moment when confronted with this dilemma. My Turkish identity won out over my profession. I thought: we must destroy them before they destroy us. If you ask me how I as a doctor could commit murder, my answer is simple: the Armenians had become dangerous microbes in the body of this country. And surely it is a doctor’s duty to kill bacteria?’ 1 Dr Mehmed Reshid (1873-1919), Governor of Diyarbekir during the genocide ‘The Turkish government began deporting the Armenian community in Sivas in convoys. Each neighbourhood was given a certain date for leaving. On the first day I watched in amazement at the crowds waiting to be deported, an endless throng of people stretching from one end of the street to the other. The pushing and shoving of the mules and the creaking of the carts made an ear-deafening noise. Men wearing hats to protect them from the sun walked alongside the carts, followed by women wearing white head scarves. Each had a task: one person was holding the cart, another the reins of the mule and yet another was watching over the family posses- sions. The children walked on either side of their parents as if they were setting off on a pleasant journey. At each end of the caravan rode mounted Turkish policemen, leading and controlling the convoy. The Turkish neighbours watched the spectacle from their windows. -

From Bloodless Revolution to Bloody Counterrevolution: The Adana Massacres of 1909 1 Bedross Der Matossian University of Nebraska–Lincoln Abstract The historiography of the Adana Massacres of 1909 is represented by two diverging views. While some Turkish scholars deny the involvement of the local government officials in the massacres by putting all of the blame on the Armenians who revolted as part of a conspiracy to establish a kingdom in Cilicia, some Armenian scholars, whose work is overshadowed by the Armenian genocide, accuse the Committee of Union and Progress (CUP) of acting behind the scenes to destroy the Armenian economic infrastructure in Adana in order to curb any future political and economic development in the area. -
Starten Met Chanson
Belgen zoals o.a. Salvatore Adamo, Frank Michael, Marc Aryan, Jacques Brel of Fréderic François -
French Pop Music Remakes in Turkey
French pop music remakes in Turkey A cognitive semiotic inquiry into cultural transfer Azize Güneş Supervisor: Göran Sonesson Centre for Languages and Literature, Lund University MA in Languages and Literature, Cognitive Semiotics SPVR01 Languages and Linguistics: Degree Project – Master’s (Two years) Thesis, 30 credits May 2017 Abstract In this thesis, the importation, transformation and distribution of French popular music in Turkey during the 20th century have been investigated as a case study of cultural transfer. By using theories and methods within a cognitive semiotic framework, this study provides an overview of the phenomenon of French pop music remakes in Turkey by accounting for the initial situation of communication of remade pop music through recorded materials, and by providing an analysis of the changes made to the songs when transformed from French to Turkish, as well as the linguistic meanings that were made available to the Turkish public in this process. Meaning making procedures in connection to pop music have been considered by analyzing components of pop music, the cognitive capacities of human beings to understand pop music, and procedures of cultural communication enabling the integration of new artefacts in a culture. According to the results of this thesis, 160 Turkish language remakes of songs originally performed in French have been produced and distributed in Turkey between 1961- 1991. The most concentrated period of production occurred during a 10-year period between 1967-1977, with a considerable peak in 1968-1969. Of the songs produced during the peak of 1968-1969, 25% account for the original French song lyrics either as “song translations” or “adaptations” of their original French versions, transferring linguistic meanings to the Turkish target culture. -
