INTRODUCTION The modern period was the time of social transformations of the humanity. The main tendency was the demolition of traditional society in all aspects of being. Another feature was the mass character of political life (alongside with the development of parliamentary system and mass political parties). The social roles and behaviors of different social layers changed as well. The emancipation of peasantry, in its broader meaning, was one of the leading tendencies of the general process of modernization. The determining factor that accelerated this process was the emerging of mass army with the mechanism of conscription. In agrarian societies the peasantry was the main component of military service. Ukrainian peasantry in Russian empire was a latecomer to this modernization process. However, it only slowed down its emancipation and it accelerated only during the World War I and the following revolutionary events. The aim is to investigate the peculiarities of Ukrainian peasantry militarization that determined its leading role in the events of Ukrainian revolution 1917–1921, including the participation in regular armies, rebellion movement and peasantry war. 1. During the World War I The World War I was the turning point of the modernization. Millions of peasants were torn apart from their traditional agrarian lifestyle and peasant world; they lost the connection with their usual way of keeping the household. Such a drastic catastrophic event could not but substantially transform the peasant’s outlook.

Luckyj Taras Shevchenko is undoubtedly Ukraine's greatest literary genius and national hero. His extraordinary life-story is recounted in this classic work by Pavlo Zaitsev. Born in 1814, the son of a poor serf, Shevchenko succeeded in winning his freedom and became an art student in St Petersburg. In 1847 he was arrested for writing revolutionary poetry, forced into the army, and exiled to deserted outposts of the Russian empire to undergo an incredible odys­ sey of misery for ten years. Zaitsev's re­ counting of Shevchenko's ordeal is a moving portrait of a man able not only to survive extreme suffering but to transform it into poetry that articulated the aspirations of his enslaved nation. To this day Ukrainians observe a national day of mourning each year on the anniversary of Shevchenko's death. Zaitsev's biography has long been recog­ nized by scholars as defmitive. Originally written and typeset in the 1930s, the manuscript was confiscated fro m Zaitsev by Soviet authori- ties when they annexed Galicia in 1939. The author still had proofs, however, which he revised and published in Munich in 1955. George luckyj's translation, the first in English, now offers this indispensable biography to a new audience. A new version, prepared by the Parliament, apparently exists for the second reading, but has not yet been translated into English. This translation was made by World Bank and received from the Ministry of Economy in March 2009. Previously, the project in February 2009 made a translation of the same document from the first reading. Draft LAW OF UKRAINE On Procurement of Goods, Works, and Services with State Funds This Law establishes the general legal and economic principles for procurement of goods, works, and services with state funds. The goal of this Law is creation of a competitive environment in the sphere of government procurement, prevention of corrupt practices in this sphere, ensuring rational and effective use of state funds. Chapter 1 GENERAL PROVISIONS Article 1. Definition of fundamental terms 1. In this Law, the terms presented below are applied with the following meanings: 1) Acceptance of a bid – adoption by the procuring entity of a bid that is determined to be the best according to the results of an assessment, and giving consent and undertaking obligations to pay for a procurement object or a part thereof (lot) according to that proposal.

    Robocza wersja wykazu polskich nazw geograficznych świata W wykazie uwzględnione zostały wyłącznie te obiekty geograficzne, dla których Komisja Standaryzacji Nazw Geograficznych poza Granicami Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej zaleca stosowanie polskich nazw (tj. egzonimów lub pseudoegzonimów). Robocza wersja wykazu zawiera zalecane polskie nazwy wg stanu na 26 czerwca 2013 r. – do czasu ostatecznej publikacji lista tych nazw może ulec niewielkim zmianom. Układ wykazu bazuje na układzie zastosowanym w zeszytach „Nazewnictwa geograficznego świata”. Wykaz podzielono na części odpowiadające częściom świata (Europa, Azja, Afryka, Ameryka Północna, Ameryka Południowa, Australia i Oceania, Antarktyka, formy podmorskie). Każda z części rozpoczyna się listą zalecanych nazw oceanów oraz wielkich regionów, które swym zasięgiem przekraczają z reguły powierzchnie kilku krajów. Następnie zamieszczono nazwy według państw i terytoriów. Z kolei nazwy poszczególnych obiektów geograficznych ułożono z podziałem na kategorie obiektów. W ramach poszczególnych kategorii nazwy ułożono alfabetycznie w szyku właściwym (prostym). Hasła odnoszące się do poszczególnych obiektów geograficznych zawierają zalecaną nazwę polską, a następnie nazwę oryginalną, w języku urzędowym (endonim) – lub nazwy oryginalne, jeśli obowiązuje więcej niż jeden język urzędowy albo dany obiekt ma ustalone nazwy w kilku językach. Jeżeli podawane są polskie nazwy wariantowe (np. Mała Syrta; Zatoka Kabiska), to nazwa pierwsza w kolejności jest tą, którą Komisja uważa za właściwszą, uznając jednak pozostałe za dopuszczalne (wyjątek stanowią tu długie (oficjalne) nazwy niektórych jednostek administracyjnych). Czasem podawana jest tylko polska nazwa – oznacza to, że dany obiekt geograficzny nie jest nazywany w kraju, w którym jest położony lub nie odnaleziono poprawnej lokalnej nazwy tego obiektu. W przypadku nazw wariantowych w językach urzędowych na pierwszym miejscu podawano nazwę główną danego obiektu. Dla niektórych obiektów podano także, w nawiasie na końcu hasła, bardziej znane polskie nazwy historyczne.
