[Amsterdam], W.J. Wyngaerts, [1625-1631], large engraving, c. 32,3 x 42,3 cm (cut to plate borders). Mounted by upper corners under passe- partout. Excellent condition. Cfr. ill. € 1200/1800 Probably unrecorded re-issue, adding publisher's address, as well as French verses at the bottom, of a major print of the early years of the Dutch Revolt. Allegorical representation of religious discord and dispute. The Pope, Luther (playing the lute) and Calvin are dining at a table. "Charitas" is put on top of a chimney, with an Anabaptist kneeling below near the fire. "Concord" presents a dead deer (Peace), and a servant (Reason) exhorts toleration. With Dutch "rederijkersverzen" for each "persona". The print was probably designed in the Haarlem artistic circle of the engraver, poet and advocate of toleration D.V. Coornhert (1522-1590) - in the verses by "Concord" there is a pun on "koer-hert" ('hert' = deer). The present re-issue would seem to draw attention to the same message of religious toleration in the heated disputes after the Dordt Synod and the death of Maurice of Nassau. Wyngaerts is recorded as an Amsterdam publisher of Dutch texts for the years 1625-1631 (1635?). Collector's monograms on verso. Ref. FOREIGN INFLUENCES ON AND INNOVATION IN ENGLISH TOMB SCULPTURE IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY by Nicola Jane Shilliam B.A. (Warwick) Ph.D. dissertation Warwick University History of Art September 1986 SUMMARY This study is an investigation of stylistic and iconographic innovation in English tomb sculpture from the accession of King Henry VIII through the first half of the sixteenth century, a period during which Tudor society and Tudor art were in transition as a result of greater interaction with continental Europe. The form of the tomb was moulded by contemporary cultural, temporal and spiritual innovations, as well as by the force of artistic personalities and the directives of patrons. Conversely, tomb sculpture is an inherently conservative art, and old traditions and practices were resistant to innovation. The early chapters examine different means of change as illustrated by a particular group of tombs. The most direct innovations were introduced by the royal tombs by Pietro Torrigiano in Westminster Abbey. The function of Italian merchants in England as intermediaries between Italian artists and English patrons is considered. Italian artists also introduced terracotta to England.

AN b OF HERITAGE LIBRARIESC ACQUISITIE // ACQUISITION Each heritage library has its individual thematic or regional profile. Collections are expanded and enriched via carefully considered acquisitions and a well thought-out donation policy. BIBLIOFIEL // BIBLIOPHILE Many heritage libraries owe thanks to the zeal of bibliophile collectors. They also preserve modern bibliophile editions, books executed in exceptional formats. CATALOGUS // CATALOGUE A library’s assets are described in a catalogue according to strict rules. This used to be done on index cards kept in special cabinets. Today, online catalogues are used, allowing readers to locate publications from home. DIGITALISERING // DIGITISATION Important, vulnerable or frequently used titles are digitised to protect them and make them more available. Originals no longer need to be manipulated and digital copies can be accessed globally via the internet. Automatic character recognition allows ‘paper’ text to be searched. EX LIBRIS // EX LIBRIS Collectors often paste or stamp an ex libris with their name and a figurative, emblematic image in their books. Such provenance marks are also found in historical books and serve as a primary source for researchers of the reading cultures of the past. 2 FLANDERS HERITAGE LIBRARY FORMAAT // FORMAT Printed books are made up of quires, which can have varying formats. The largest ‘folio’ format consist of four pages. It is created by folding a sheet of paper once. An additional fold results in a ‘quarto’ format of eight pages and a third fold in an ‘octavo’ format of sixteen pages. GOUDSTEMPELING // GOld TOOLING Books used to be bound in leather or parchment. The binding was sometimes tooled, using gold leaf to give books their characteristic sparkle.

One of the movie’s famous scenes depicts Edward (Richard Gere) and Vivian (Julia Roberts) at the Libretto by Francesco Maria Piave opera, watching a performance of La traviata, and Vivian is brought to tears. As the viewers, we’re meant to see the similarity between the movie and the opera—a courtesan falling in love with a wealthy suiter. But in Verdi's day, fiery romances at the opera often didn't turn out so well.
