[Amsterdam], W.J. Wyngaerts, [1625-1631], large engraving, c. 32,3 x 42,3 cm (cut to plate borders). Mounted by upper corners under passe- partout. Excellent condition. Cfr. ill. € 1200/1800 Probably unrecorded re-issue, adding publisher's address, as well as French verses at the bottom, of a major print of the early years of the Dutch Revolt. Allegorical representation of religious discord and dispute. The Pope, Luther (playing the lute) and Calvin are dining at a table. "Charitas" is put on top of a chimney, with an Anabaptist kneeling below near the fire. "Concord" presents a dead deer (Peace), and a servant (Reason) exhorts toleration. With Dutch "rederijkersverzen" for each "persona". The print was probably designed in the Haarlem artistic circle of the engraver, poet and advocate of toleration D.V. Coornhert (1522-1590) - in the verses by "Concord" there is a pun on "koer-hert" ('hert' = deer). The present re-issue would seem to draw attention to the same message of religious toleration in the heated disputes after the Dordt Synod and the death of Maurice of Nassau. Wyngaerts is recorded as an Amsterdam publisher of Dutch texts for the years 1625-1631 (1635?). Collector's monograms on verso. Ref. Geloof en satire anno 1600 (Utrecht 1981) pp. 38-42 (on 17th-c. paintings and the Visscher issue). Cp. Atlas van Stolk 326 and Muller 427 (re-issue by C.J. Visscher). 2 [Applied art] - BARBET, Jean - Livre d'architecture d'autels, et de cheminees, dedie a Monseigneur (...) Cardinael (!) Duc de Richelieu (...). Paris, sold Amsterdam, C.
