NPS Form 10-900 USDI/NPS NRHP Registration Form (Rev. 8-86) OMB No. 1024-0018 USS CONSTELLATION Page 4 United States Department of the Interior, National Park Service National Register of Historic Places Registration Form Summary The USS Constellation’s career in naval service spanned one hundred years: from commissioning on July 28, 1855 at Norfolk Navy Yard, Virginia to final decommissioning on February 4, 1955 at Boston, Massachusetts. (She was moved to Baltimore, Maryland in the summer of 1955.) During that century this sailing sloop-of-war, sometimes termed a “corvette,” was nationally significant for its ante-bellum service, particularly for its role in the effort to end the foreign slave trade. It is also nationally significant as a major resource in the mid-19th century United States Navy representing a technological turning point in the history of U.S. naval architecture. In addition, the USS Constellation is significant for its Civil War activities, its late 19th century missions, and for its unique contribution to international relations both at the close of the 19th century and during World War II. At one time it was believed that Constellation was a 1797 ship contemporary to the frigate Constitution moored in Boston. This led to a long-standing controversy over the actual identity of the Constellation. Maritime scholars long ago reached consensus that the vessel currently moored in Baltimore is the 1850s U.S. navy sloop-of-war, not the earlier 1797 frigate. Describe Present and Historic Physical Appearance. The USS Constellation, now preserved at Baltimore, Maryland, was built at the navy yard at Norfolk, Virginia.

  • Technical Supplements
Technical Supplements S1 The IG JAS Investment In this Technical Supplement the JAS 39 Gripen product concept is outlined, the procurement process documented, the Industry Group IG JAS presented and the critical role of the competent public procurement agency, the FMV, highlighted. S1.1 The Procurement of the JAS 39 Gripen Aircraft with Swing-Role Capabilities The JAS 39 Gripen multirole combat aircraft (J stands for fighter, A for Attack and S for Surveillance/reconnaissance) is a fourth generation aircraft that entered operational service in 1997. It replaced the Viggen, the last of which was taken out of service in 2006. JAS 39 Gripen is a combat aircraft with swing-role capabilities that can change mission in flight. This swing-role capability was unique when Gripen was launched but has later been introduced on the French Rafale and the Eurofighter. Other competing multirole aircraft first have to land to reconfigure its information, guidance, and weapons systems for a new role. Gripen was the first “unstable” aircraft in the world which meant that in order for the aircraft to be stable at all speeds and in all maneuvers many more navigation surfaces are needed than the pilot can possibly control himself to minimize air friction at each moment. He needs incredibly sophisticated computer systems support to maneuver the aircraft effectively and safely. Competing fourth generation combat aircraft are F-35/JSF (the USA, not yet (2009) delivered to market), the Eurofighter Typhoon (the UK, etc.) and Rafale (Dassault, France). JAS 39 Gripen also competes with upgraded versions of the third generation aircraft of Lockheed Martin F-16 (the USA, first delivered in 1978), Boeing F/A18 Hornet (the USA, first delivered in 1983), Dassault Mirage 2000 (France, first delivered in 1983), and Mig-29 (the former Soviet Union, first delivered in 1977).

During this period, the armaments industry underwent a radical transformation, moving from being based on public-owned arsenals and yards to being based on private firms – the system of military procurement prevalent today.

  • Heinkel He 219 Nachtjagdflugzeug

  • Heinkel He-219
Luftwaffe-Experten 1939-1945 9/11/02 6:32 pm Heinkel He-219 Potentially one of the Luftwaffe's most effective night-fighters, the Heinkel He 219 Uhu (Owl) was another aircraft which suffered from misjudgments by senior members of the government and the Luftwaffe high command (principally, in this case, Generalfeldmarschall Erhard Milch, Inspector General of the Luftwaffe). Although the aircraft had proved itself a match for British bombers, including the de Havilland Mosquito, Milch succeeded in having the programme abandoned in favour of the Junkers Ju 388J and the Focke-Wulf Ta 154. Despite this, some aircraft were produced after the official cessation and production totaled 288 including prototypes. The Reichsluftfahrtministerium had been lukewarm about the project from the beginning, Heinkel's private venture P.1060 fighter-bomber proposal receiving little encouragement until 1941 when it was seen to have potential as a night-fighter. The all-metal shoulder- wing monoplane that finally emerged incorporated a number of noteworthy features. The pilot and navigator, seated back-to- back, enjoyed excellent visibility from the cockpit in the extreme nose, well forward of the guns so that the pilot's eyes were not affected by their flashes. The crew was also provided with ejector seats, the He 219 being the worlds first operational aircraft to be so equipped, and it was also the first aircraft with tricycle landing gear to achieve operational status with the Luftwaffe. The first prototype was flown on 15 November 1942, powered by two 1,750 hp (1305 kW) Daimler- Benz DB 603A engines, and in December armament trials were undertaken at Peenemunde.
