Looking back at those PRODUCTS twelve months, it was a very productive year for Squadron with many exciting things happening. In 2016, we took on various new lines like Takom, MiniArt, Yahu, and Abteilung 502 to name a few. We are happy to announce this month that Bronco (found on pages 26-27) is now part of our offerings as well as an expanded selection from Minicraft (pg 7). We plan to have at least one new line every month in 2017. Our biggest announcement yet is the launch of our first major kit that will be available in the next coming weeks, the HAUNEBU II German flying saucer! The release of the Haunebu kit will be an exciting event that will reveal a darker saga in the history of spacecraft with all the elements of WW2... occultism, inter- planetary technology, secrecy and mystique combined in one. No matter if you are an aircraft, armor or ship modeler, this piece will spark your imagination and curiosity! Check out SquadronModels.com to learn more about how you can be among the first to get this amazing kit. NEW Below, you will see our brand-new Squadron Signal Publication, SS10223, U.S. ECM Aircraft. The purpose of Electronic countermea- sures (ECM) is to jam, spoof, trick or otherwise fool an enemy about the location or capabilities of armed combat units. While the United States employs ECM on the land, air and sea, modern military aircraft are the primary platform in the ECM battle because they can scan a larger patch of earth. This book briefly explains the history and development of various ECM techniques with particular emphasis on U.S. Navy, Air Force and Marine aircraft that have taken electronic countermeasures into battle from the 1950s through NEW present. Each time I look forward turning myself into a better person January first and stop doing something that I shouldn’t, like eating too many French fries with mayonnaise! But I am weak and just the smell of fries and an imaginary glob of mayo on top of it, makes me hand over more than my rank and serial num b e r t o t h e e n e m y. But then there is my hobby and all the various projects that need finishing and are cluttering my desk. There is the clutter itself, that frankly speaking, takes all the joy away of finishing anything! Organizing my paints is a good one. God only knows how many bottles of open and unopened Vallejo colors that are scattered all over the place! Spilled super glue that forever glued my cutting mat to my table and last but not least, the big stain that expanded on the carpet one night when my dog tried to get to the half-eaten liver wurst sandwich on my work bench and knocked over my turpentine jar in the process! So, there you have it. I found my resolve for 2017. I am going to be a clean modeler from now on. January one, this guy will be the poster child for efficiency and neatness! No more stirring paint with the back of my pin-vise and then leave it caked on until I really need it. No more squirts of super glue on a piece of paper and then let my X-acto knife roll in it. You won’t see me licking my paint brushes any longer to keep the hairs in line. Nor will you catch me wiping the putty off my fingers underneath my chair. I am going to throw out what cannot be saved and replace them with the newest gizmos and gadgets from Squadron Tools. My friends will not believe their own eyes when they admire my treasured tools, organized and hanging from the magnet strip and not jumbled on my table top so I won’t cut myself on a scalpel when I’m reaching for tweezers! The aroma of 409 Cleaner will, as of then, fill the room on a weekly basis when at least twice, I will make my rounds and remove dust and grime from my modeling work space. As for the stain on the carpet, well I’m going to leave it there for a while as a reminder. At least I won’t forget how quick it all can digress back into chaos when I’m building my next model. Or for when I feel the urge pop up to cut corners and use the bottom of my t-shirt to wipe off some excess oil paint from the wing on my Boulton Paul Defiant when Honey is not looking! All in all, it’s not only about the resolution itself. It is also about the enchanting feeling when improving one’s quality of life. The sensation of making a plan for the greater good, executing it and getting a fresh start. That’s what I’m talking about! Just watch me! Now, y’all have a prosperous, happy and productive New Year! • The Direct Air Support During the Battle of the Java Sea, As Seen from the Allied Side (2015, Revised May-June 2016, Revised July-August 2016)
The direct air support during the Battle of the Java Sea, as seen from the allied side (2015, revised May-June 2016, revised July-August 2016) © Dr. P.C. Boer Introduction [1] After a failed air campaign fought in the period of 18 February up to and including 27 February 1942 the allied forces in Java, former Netherlands East Indies, had only one instrument left to try to prevent a Japanese invasion of Java, the Combined Striking Force (CSF) of the combined allied navies. The battle of the Java Sea between the CSF, a naval squadron consisting of cruisers and destroyers from The Netherlands, United States, United Kingdom and Australia commanded by Rear-Admiral K.W.F.M. Doorman and a Japanese war fleet led by Rear-Admiral Takagi Takeo on 27 February 1942 is well known, as is its outcome. Less well known is the fact that during the larger part of the so- called day fight of the battle the allied air forces of the joint combined Java Air Command (JAC) succeeded in keeping up a local air superiority with 15 fighters from Ngoro in eastern Java. The number of 15 consisted of 10 Curtiss P-40Es of 17 Pursuit Squadron Provisional, 17 PS (P), of the United States Army Air Force (USAAF) and five Brewster 339 fighters of the Militaire Luchtvaart KNIL (ML/KNIL, Army Aviation Corps of the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army) detached to this squadron from Andir in western Java. Also little known is the activities of the allied and Japanese cruiser reconnaissance and artillery spotting planes.

Submarines in the United States Navy - Wikipedia Page 1 of 13 Submarines in the United States Navy There are three major types of submarines in the United States Navy: ballistic missile submarines, attack submarines, and cruise missile submarines. All submarines in the U.S. Navy are nuclear-powered. Ballistic subs have a single strategic mission of carrying nuclear submarine-launched ballistic missiles. Attack submarines have several tactical missions, including sinking ships and subs, launching cruise missiles, and gathering intelligence. • Bf-110 Messerschmitt
Bf-110 Messerschmitt The Messerschmitt Bf-110 was designed as a “heavy fighter” intended to escort bombers on long–range missions that were beyond reach of escorting fighters. The Bf-110 was however incapable of defending itself against most contemporary fighters in WWII so the aircraft was adapted for use in many roles including fighter bomber, reconnaissance, light transport and finally as a night fighter in defense of the Reich during the later stages of WWII. The Bf-110 was used throughout the war but served a unique role in one of the most unusual stories from WWII. On May 10, 1941 Deputy Fuhrer of the German Reich, Rudolf Hess piloted a BF-110 for a clandestine flight to the England with the apparent intention of negotiating a separate peace treaty with England. Hess parachuted from his Messerschmitt Bf- 110 and landed in the English countryside while the airplane flew on to crash in Scotland. Fragments of the airplane were recovered, and markings were determined after a close inspection of photographs of the crash site. Rudolf Hess was never had a chance to begin negotiations since any knowledge of the flight was denied by Adolf Hitler and Deputy Fuhrher Hess was condemned by the German government as having gone mad. Hess served the duration of WWII in an English POW camp and after the war stood trial at the Nurnberg War Crimes trials. Having been convicted of war crimes, Hess spent the rest of his life in Spandau Prison. Defence IQ ARMOURED VEHICLES MARKET REPORT 2017 sponsored by CONTENTS Executive Summary 4 Survey Analysis 5 Regional Developments 20 Europe North America Middle East Asia-Pacific Africa Latin America International Armoured Vehicle Review 66 Military Insight 68 Credits 76 About Defence IQ / Disclaimer 77 International Armoured Vehicles 23 - 26 January, 2017 2 Twickenham Stadium , London, UK Register today! “The defence market FOREWORD is becoming more sponsored by NIMR Automative sensitive to cost and value for money” In 2016 we have continued to see hotspots of unrest and conflict across the world, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa region, and there are few indications that these will abate in 2017. Conflict is unpredictable and asymmetric in nature and, in responding to these threats, armies across the globe are expecting their armoured vehicle fleets to provide the backbone of their ground based fighting capability. Versatile and flexible in use, armoured vehicles provide the protection and mobility for the deployment of troops, sensors and weapon systems. They deliver the military capability and “troops on the ground” where and when they are needed. At NIMR, we closely monitor market trends to ensure we are ready to meet the emerging demands of our customers. With this in mind, we welcome the annual Global Armoured Vehicles Market Report and are delighted to introduce the 2017 Report. Launched ahead of the series of armoured vehicle conferences, the report identifies the trends within the sector that will shape the market activity for the coming year. We expect to see continued growth in the demand for vehicles from the international market, both for new capability and to replace some ageing fleets.
