SHIPS OVERSEAS TO JUNE 194 0 URING the first ten months of the war, those Australian ships not D retained on the home station were employed in Imperial dispositions in widely separated areas . The first six months found Perth in Central American waters, mainly engaged in the dual task of protecting trade — especially the important tanker traffic in the Caribbean—and preventin g the escape of German merchant ships sheltering in neutral ports of th e islands and the Isthmus . Last of the three expansion-program cruiser s acquired from Britain, she had commissioned at Portsmouth on the 29th June 1939 as H .M.A. Ship under "Fighting Freddie " Farncomb, a studious , coolly-efficient officer whose nickname, bestowed during the war, reflected the confidence and esteem of the lower deck . Perth sailed from Portsmouth on the 26th July for Australia via th e Panama Canal, and reached New York, where she represented Australi a at the World Fair, on the 4th August. On the 21st of the month, after twelve days of American hospitality, she arrived at Kingston, Jamaica, an d was to have sailed for Panama on the 23rd, but in the early morning o f that date Farncomb received a signal sent to the Admiralty by the Com- mander-in-Chief, America and West Indies—Vice-Admiral Meyrick' — asking that Perth might remain on the station . Farncomb thereupon can- celled his sailing arrangements, thus anticipating an Admiralty signa l received later in the day directing him to "return Kingston and awai t further orders " . -

Master Narrative Ours Is the Epic Story of the Royal Navy, Its Impact on Britain and the World from Its Origins in 625 A.D
NMRN Master Narrative Ours is the epic story of the Royal Navy, its impact on Britain and the world from its origins in 625 A.D. to the present day. We will tell this emotionally-coloured and nuanced story, one of triumph and achievement as well as failure and muddle, through four key themes:- People. We tell the story of the Royal Navy’s people. We examine the qualities that distinguish people serving at sea: courage, loyalty and sacrifice but also incidents of ignorance, cruelty and cowardice. We trace the changes from the amateur ‘soldiers at sea’, through the professionalization of officers and then ships’ companies, onto the ‘citizen sailors’ who fought the World Wars and finally to today’s small, elite force of men and women. We highlight the change as people are rewarded in war with personal profit and prize money but then dispensed with in peace, to the different kind of recognition given to salaried public servants. Increasingly the people’s story becomes one of highly trained specialists, often serving in branches with strong corporate identities: the Royal Marines, the Submarine Service and the Fleet Air Arm. We will examine these identities and the Royal Navy’s unique camaraderie, characterised by simultaneous loyalties to ship, trade, branch, service and comrades. Purpose. We tell the story of the Royal Navy’s roles in the past, and explain its purpose today. Using examples of what the service did and continues to do, we show how for centuries it was the pre-eminent agent of first the British Crown and then of state policy throughout the world. -

Twentieth Century Naval Dockyards Devonport and Portsmouth: Characterisation Report PART FOUR CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS The final focus of this report is to develop the local, national and international contexts of the two dockyards to highlight specific areas of future research. Future discussion of Devonport and Portsmouth as distinct designed landscapes would coherently organise the many strands identified in this report. The Museum of London Archaeology Portsmouth Harbour Hinterland Project carried out for Heritage England (2015) is a promising step in this direction. It is emphasised that this study is just a start. By delivering the aim and objectives, it has indicated areas of further fruitful research. Project aim: to characterise the development of the active naval dockyards at Devonport and Portsmouth, and the facilities within the dockyard boundaries at their maximum extent during the twentieth century, through library, archival and field surveys, presented and analysed in a published report, with a database of documentary and building reports. This has been delivered through Parts 1-4 and Appendices 2-4. Project objectives 1 To provide an overview of the twentieth century development of English naval dockyards, related to historical precedent, national foreign policy and naval strategy. 2 To address the main chronological development phases to accommodate new types of vessels and technologies of the naval dockyards at Devonport and Portsmouth. 3 To identify the major twentieth century naval technological revolutions which affected British naval dockyards. 4 To relate the main chronological phases to topographic development of the yards and changing technological and strategic needs, and identify other significant factors. 5 To distinguish which buildings are typical of the twentieth century naval dockyards and/or of unique interest. -

During this period, the armaments industry underwent a radical transformation, moving from being based on public-owned arsenals and yards to being based on private firms – the system of military procurement prevalent today. -

Defence acquisition Alex Wild and Elizabeth Oakes 17th May 2016 He efficient procurement of defence equipment has long been a challenge for British governments. It is an extremely complex process that is yet to be mastered with vast T sums of money invariably at stake – procurement and support of military equipment consumes around 40 per cent of annual defence cash expenditure1. In 2013-14 Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) spent £13.9bn buying and supporting military equipment2. With the House of Commons set to vote on the “Main Gate” decision to replace Trident in 2016, the government is set to embark on what will probably be the last major acquisition programme in the current round of the Royal Navy’s post-Cold War modernisation strategy. It’s crucial that the errors of the past are not repeated. Introduction There has been no shortage of reports from the likes of the National Audit Office and the Public Accounts Committee on the subject of defence acquisition. By 2010 a £38bn gap had opened up between the equipment programme and the defence budget. £1.5bn was being lost annually due to poor skills and management, the failure to make strategic investment decisions due to blurred roles and accountabilities and delays to projects3. In 2008, the then Secretary of State for Defence, John Hutton, commissioned Bernard Gray to produce a review of defence acquisition. The findings were published in October 2009. Appendix 1 – The Evolution of HMS Dorsetshire This image and the one on the next page show Dorsetshire in 1930, during builder’s trials1 Dorsetshire in July 19312 Dorsetshire in 1932.At this time her secondary and tertiary armament is still very light, just four single 4-inch guns abreast the forward funnels and four single 2-pdr pompoms abreast the bridge3 This 1948 model, shown to better advantage on the next page, depicts Dorsetshire under refit in 1937 in No. 14 Dock at Portsmouth Dockyard. The twin 4-inch mountings are in place abreast the funnels, as are the octuple 2-pounder pom poms aft of the torpedo tubes.4 Dorsetshire in dock at Singapore after her 1937 refit.5 This image and the one on the next page show how difficult it was for her to engage aircraft attacking from directly ahead. The arrows highlight her guns as follows: blue = twin 4-inch red = quad .5-inch green = octuple 2-pdr pom poms Dorsetshire in 19416 Three shots of Dorsetshire in 1941. The painting of the aft funnel and part of the hull in a light colour was meant to make her appear to be a single-funnelled vessel – a sloop, according to one source. The paint scheme was possibly first applied at Simonstown between 16 and 20 March, since this was apparently Dorsetshire’s only docking between December 1940 and June-July 1941. The top image was taken at Cape Town, possibly between 21 and 23 April 1941. The centre image was presumably taken prior to the June-July refit, since the ship sports what seems to have been the original version of this paint scheme. -

The Aurora is an armored cruiser currently preserved and serving as a school and museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia. This battle ensign was on the leading U-Boats on same day, 1943. An iconic French ensign which embod Royal Navy ship of the invasion that assaulted the Normandy ies the brief, yet brave, struggle of French forces against fascist beaches on June 6, 1944. Commander Anthony Kimmins secured Germany in the opening years of WWII. This flag comes from the the flag for Calvin Bullock for his return visit to New York. FNFL corvette ‘Aconite’ and was part of the Bullock Collection. This White Ensign, according to Husky, Invasion of Sicily, 1943. Due to wartime security constraints, Calvin Bullock’s documentation was “From His Majesty’s Canadian the name of the vessel that wore this ensign remains unknown. France, Belgium, Poland, Denmark, Norway and the Netherlands had fallen to Hitler’s Third Reich. The United States, Ireland, and Sweden were still neutral. Only the convoys crossing the sea from Canada and the United States provided the lifeline that kept England going. Now the German Battleship Bismarck, the largest, newest, and most powerful battleship in the world was threatening this lifeline. Bismarck, the jewel of the German navy, displaced more than 50,000 tons and was outfitted with eight 15-inch guns. She broke out of her German port for her first mission on May 18, 1941 and headed for the open Atlantic to intercept and destroy convoys en route from the U.S. The British Royal Navy located the Bismarck between Iceland and Greenland on May 24 and sent the pride of the Royal Navy, the Battlecruiser HMS Hood, the “Mighty Hood”, and the new, unfinished battleship HMS Prince of Wales, to face Bismarck. They were ordered by Churchill to find the Bismarck quickly because several large convoys were heading for Britain and there would be a terrible blood bath of merchantmen if Bismarck got loose among the convoys. In the ferocious battle that ensued, the Hood exploded and sank within minutes, losing all but three of her crew complement in excess of 1,300. -

This was due to the very good harbour and its ice-free con- ditions. At the outbreak of World War II, Narvik was a strategically important harbour, and during the first few days of the war a very intense battle was fought out here between German, Norwegian and British naval forces. During this fighting several ships were sunk, both warships and civil merchant ships. Narvik harbour was transformed into a great ship ceme- tery, with wrecks sticking up out of the water every- where. Several of the ships were later salvaged, but many wrecks still remained. With its high density of wrecks, Narvik is an eldorado for wreck divers.
