An Ottoman Global Moment
AN OTTOMAN GLOBAL MOMENT: WAR OF SECOND COALITION IN THE LEVANT A Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Georgetown University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy In History By Kahraman Sakul, M.A Washington, DC November, 18, 2009 Copyright 2009 by Kahraman Sakul All Rights Reserved ii AN OTTOMAN GLOBAL MOMENT: WAR OF SECOND COALITION IN THE LEVANT Kahraman Sakul, M.A. Dissertation Advisor: Gabor Agoston, Ph.D. ABSTRACT This dissertation aims to place the Ottoman Empire within its proper context in the Napoleonic Age and calls for a recognition of the crucial role of the Sublime Porte in the War of Second Coalition (1798-1802). The Ottoman-Russian joint naval expedition (1798-1800) to the Ionian Islands under the French occupation provides the framework for an examination of the Ottoman willingness to join the European system of alliance in the Napoleonic age which brought the victory against France in the Levant in the War of Second Coalition (1798-1802). Collections of the Ottoman Archives and Topkapı Palace Archives in Istanbul as well as various chronicles and treatises in Turkish supply most of the primary sources for this dissertation. Appendices, charts and maps are provided to make the findings on the expedition, finance and logistics more readable. The body of the dissertation is divided into nine chapters discussing in order the global setting and domestic situation prior to the forming of the second coalition, the Adriatic expedition, its financial and logistical aspects with the ensuing socio-economic problems in the Morea, the Sublime Porte’s relations with its protectorate – The Republic of Seven United Islands, and finally the post-war diplomacy. -

Domenico Maltese Proc. L 'indagine è suddivisa in tre parti. La prima, di carattere didascalico, contiene l'enuncia zione di concetti generali: "Generai concepts". La seconda è dedicata all'analisi dell'esistente, a raggio amplissimo, nazionale e ultranazionale, "The regulation of the Free Ports in the world". Nella terza si delinea la figura giuridica del Free Port, per astrazione dalle sue particolari manifestazioni storiche: "The Free Port status". -

The Fresco Decoration of the Oratorio Dei Buonomini Di San Martino: Piety and Charity in Late-Fifteenth Century Florence a Thesi
Birmingham City University The Fresco Decoration of the Oratorio dei Buonomini di San Martino: Piety and Charity in Late-Fifteenth Century Florence 2 Volumes A Thesis in Art History by Samantha J.C. Hughes-Johnson Submitted in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy May 2016 Volume I Abstract Despite the emergence of various studies focusing on Florentine lay sodalities, the Procurators of the Shamed Poor of Florence, otherwise known as the Buonomini di San Martino, have received little attention from social historians and much less consideration from historians of art. Consequently, there are several distinct research gaps concerning the charitable operations of this lay confraternity and the painted decorations within its oratory that beg to be addressed. The greatest research breach pertains to the fresco decoration of the San Martino chapel as, despite the existence of various pre- iconographic descriptions of the murals, comprehensive iconographic and comparative analyses of these painted works have never before been carried out. Moreover, the dating of the entire cycle and the attribution of one of its lunette paintings is questionable. Accordingly, the present study addresses these deficiencies. Central to the current research is an original, in-depth art historical analysis of the frescoed paintings. Involving the methodologies of iconographic and comparative analyses alongside connoisseurship, the present investigation has allowed the researcher to establish the following: the art historical significance of the oratory murals; the dating of the fresco cycle; the attribution of an executor for the Dream of Saint Martin fresco; the identification of portraits of Lorenzo and Giuliano de’ Medici within the Buonomini cycle; the disclosure of the shamed poor as non-patrician representatives of Florence. -

Afterwards, from 1896 to 1897, the sea level stations of Imperia, Livorno, Civitavecchia, Napoli (Arsenale e Mandracchio), Messina, Palermo, Catania, Ancona, Ravenna Porto Corsini, Cagliari, and La Maddalena started working. Than, in 1920 the stations of Reggio Calabria and Vieste started and, under the management of the National Marine Service, the Italian sea level stations begun to have the characteristics of a real network distributed on the territory. The regular tidal observations made in Venice are among the oldest and most reliable in Italy and in the Mediterranean in general. Systematic observations of sea level in Venice started in 1872 with the installation of the first tide gauge by the Military Geographic Institute and afterwards run by the Hydrographic Office of Venice.
