Derek Vance President St. Elizabeth and Nebraska Heart

2 Inspiring Good Dear Friends, Hem your blessings with thankfulness so they don’t unravel. It is indeed time to say “thank you” once again to the special individuals who have invested in our mission. During 2018, here are just a few of the accomplishments you have made possible: • New beds in critical care and surgery. • Fetal monitoring system which allows laboring mothers to ambulate. • Cryosurgery system for flexible bronchoscopy. • Hyperbaric oxygen chambers to help patients with difficult wounds to heal.

Several initiatives took place, in addition to clinical equipment that was put into place: • Planning began for a significant renovation to our Regional Burn and Wound Center (the only verified burn unit in the state). • The provision of hardship funds for employees and patients in need continued. • A united community effort to eliminate violent behavior and help foster good decision-making continued to expand with Lincoln Public Schools. • Funding of a camp for young patients who have experienced burns once again took place in the summer. • Scholarships for six high school students participating in health career mentoring were awarded. • Twenty-two scholarships for employees who are pursuing continuing education were awarded, as well as three scholarships for teen and college volunteers—most gratefully endowed by our donors.

Our ongoing projects include the new “Pediatric Place” — a combined inpatient and emergency unit for our young patients at St. Elizabeth, as well as our canopy ambulance entrance that will provide a safer space for incoming patients at Nebraska Heart. We continue to embrace compassionate caregiving—and thanks to your support—are able to excel in many ways.

Thank you for your continuing generosity and your prayers. It has been so evident that your support is making an impact on our patient care and the community.

With much appreciation,

Donna K. Hammack, CFRE FCEP Chief Development Officer St. Elizabeth/Nebraska Heart Foundation

ST. ELIZABETH/NEBRASKA HEART FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2018 3 Dear Friends of the Foundation: We are humbled by the ongoing support and generosity of our donors who partner with us to provide healthier tomorrows for the patients we serve. On behalf of the St. Elizabeth and Nebraska Heart Foundation Board and staff —thank you for your support. The Foundation continues to inspire good and impact our patients and community through raising funds for new programs and technology. Through your generous donations, the Foundation provided funds for so many valuable clinical enhancements that benefit our patients of all ages: video connections for families to their tiniest family members in the NICU—to high tech fetal monitoring for pregnant moms—to hyperbaric oxygen treatment for patients with difficult to heal wounds. Our outreach in the community has had a far reaching impact. This is evident by our Violence Prevention program with the Lincoln Public School System, where we supplemented the Second Step emotional intelligence and decision making in after school and summer programs. In addition, the Foundation continues to enhance the quality of life for many in our community through the patient charity care fund, providing assistance for prescriptions and essentials patients need after discharge from St. Elizabeth and Nebraska Heart hospitals. It is heartwarming when we are able to help those in need and enhance treatments and technology available. Please know that your contributions mean the world to us, and we are so grateful for the lives we can impact because of them. Your gifts truly allow us to continue to fulfill our healing mission. Thank you,

David Schmidt, MD, Chair St. Elizabeth/Nebraska Heart Foundation

Please note: article and information in this Annual Report reflect 2018 contributions. The 2019 Annual report will be published prior to August, 2020.

ST. ELIZABETH/NEBRASKA HEART FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2018 9 An Adventure in Giving

ven when you know you’re doing something good, the outcome can surprise you. That’s been the experience of volunteer and Foundation supporter Katherine Bangsund. Her view: “Life is an adventure.”

One day while volunteering at St. Elizabeth, she helped escort a special needs choir group to the Burn and Wound Center. A patient who had been mute for some time had an unexpected reaction Eto the performance. “The music really moved her and she started to speak,” Bangsund said. When she supports the St. Elizabeth Foundation with monetary donations for specific items, such as camera monitors for neonatal isolettes and the Burn Camp for kids, Bangsund knows she’s making a difference. “That’s where you get your rewards – when you support something like that and you know it will help them for many years,” she said.

Bangsund knows St. Elizabeth. She spent 16 years here as an occupational therapist. A circuitous path brought her to Nebraska. The Minnesota native and University of North Dakota graduate worked in Council Bluffs, , and at the VA hospital in Lincoln before landing at CHI Health St. Elizabeth in 1990.

Now a President’s Council member, Bangsund remembers her first donations were smaller, but just as significant. “When I first was employed, my supervisor said you can give whatever you want, large or small. It started there,” she said.

The 20-plus year volunteer more recently took advantage of estate planning assistance with Thompson & Associates. “It’s just a matter of deciding to whom or where you want your money to go. You can’t take it all with you,” she said.

Instead, she’s leaving much behind, including countless prayer shawls she crocheted for the hospital. That project began years ago when the Foundation had five bags of yarn and asked if she could do something with them. “I’ve been involved with the Foundation for a long time and volunteering is always a great way to give to others,” she said.

In semi-retirement, Bangsund still has much to give. Now, when she volunteers at the front desk and in employee health, she’s never sure what the day will bring. That’s part of the adventure.

ST. ELIZABETH/NEBRASKA HEART FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2018 11 Bonnie and Terry Trausch

12 Inspiring Good A Commitment to Success

s the Executive Assistant in the office of the President, Bonnie Trausch has seen all kinds of changes in her 41 years at St. Elizabeth. “I’m on my fourth president,” she joked.

Trausch came to Lincoln, Nebraska, from her hometown of Edgar, Nebraska, 47 years ago. What brought her here was a job with the Nebraska Department of Health. “I was in the health field right off in my working career,” she said. “And then I came to St. Elizabeth because I wanted to advance my career.”

AFour-plus decades brought plenty of advances and growth for St. Elizabeth – such as the journey of becoming part of CHI and then CHI Health – as well as consistent expansion. One thing has remained constant: the Foundation’s support for the organization.

Trausch doesn’t remember exactly when she started contributing to the St. Elizabeth Foundation, but it was not long after starting her career here. Over the years, she’s occasionally picked specific programs to benefit.

“Because of my family’s history, I’ve done some giving with the cardiac and cancer programs,” she said. “A brother-in-law and aunt died from cancer and her father had heart issues. That’s why those are special to me. My children were also born here at St. Elizabeth. More recently, I’ve been giving to whatever the annual fundraiser is for.”

Giving is a no-brainer for the long-time staff member. “I want to see St. Elizabeth succeed,” she said. “Donating to the Foundation will continue the provision of care at St. Elizabeth. I see the requests come across from all of the departments for equipment and the Foundation is so generous. It’s an important part of keeping St. Elizabeth strong.”

Bonnie and her husband, Terry, have two adult sons in their 30s. The oldest worked at St. Elizabeth for a time before becoming a physical therapist at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. In her spare time, she enjoys gardening and sewing.

14 Inspiring Good New Monitoring System Gives Birthing Moms Mobility

Moms in labor used to spend hours tethered to a monitor with a belt and wires. It was for good reason – to track baby’s condition real time as delivery neared. Now, with generous donations to the Foundation, the Monica Novii system is making it easier to monitor baby and mom.

“This equipment has allowed us to cut the cord, so to speak,” said Tiffany Nordmeyer, RN, Operations Director-Women’s & Children’s. The Monica Novii Wireless Patch System is a small, reliable and accurate fetal heart rate monitor that is wireless and beltless. It’s a patch that sticks to the mom’s belly, making it much more comfortable and allowing moms to get up and walk around the unit.

“The advantage is that it allows the mom to be more mobile and less confined during labor. This gives them control over their labor experience,” said Nordmeyer. It monitors mom’s heart rate, uterine activity and the fetal heart rate, all of which paint a clearer picture of how both mom and baby are doing.

With it, moms can walk around, use a birthing ball and even shower. “When patients have more control and mobility – we have all the advantages of high-tech monitoring – that’s the perfect fit,” said Nordmeyer.

Camera System Enhances the Bonding Experience

Time in the NICU, while lifesaving, can be hard on families. Parents often experience a jumble of joy, fatigue and worry. A special point of reassurance is the Angel Eye. This camera system was created specifically for babies and families.

Placed in the NICU to view the baby, it allows parents and family members to log in to a secure network and see baby from wherever they are – home or work. It’s also a wonderful way for siblings and extended family members to see baby without being in the NICU.

Angel Eye is the only camera system created specifically for babies and families. “It’s a wonderful way to provide peace of mind to families and really enhance the connection they have with baby while in our care,” said Gayann Wagner, RN, nurse manager, NICU.

Research has shown that increasing the oxygen content can promote the growth of new blood vessels and skin, which is a cornerstone of healing.

Every summer, campers can swim, hike, ride horses, fish, star gaze, play sports, canoe – all the typical summer experiences — but in a safe environment staffed by health care professionals. Generous donations to the St. Elizabeth Foundation make Burn Camp possible for all children who have suffered a burn injury.

ST. ELIZABETH/NEBRASKA HEART FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2018 25 Health Care Career Camp and Summer Internship helps students explore occupations

In June, several students from Lincoln area high schools had real-life experiences at CHI Health St. Elizabeth Summer Career Camp. “That’s part of what we want is for them to be able to see that medicine truly is a career that they would enjoy,” said Vice President of Medical Operations Michael Rapp, MD. “And so it’s kind of fun seeing these people getting back to us after completing their education.”

This year, a select group of interns were paired one-on-one with a mentor (photo from left to right - Dr. Michael Rapp, Lilly Zhou, Priscilla Lebesse, Abigail Mitchell, Alysha Reinhardt, Sydni Springer, Crystal Xu and Tiffany Heimes, coordinator). Their goal was to conduct high level research with their mentors. As their research concludes, the interns participated in a presentation ceremony to hospital and medical staff, plus the community. These presentations are shared with the school system and our local community. Following their internship, the St. Elizabeth and Nebraska Heart Foundation awarded each student with a $500 educational scholarship. We are so grateful for the time and talent of these incredible students!

We truly appreciate providers and our staff that are out in the community making a difference in the lives of students interested in health care as a career.
