    BAB I PENDAHULUAN A. Latar Belakang Tan Malaka, Bapak Madilog, adalah salah satu sosok yang “misterius” dalam sejarah Indonesia. Dia merupakan salah satu tokoh founding fathers bangsa Indonesia. Bertahun-tahun bergerilya dan melakukan gerakan bawah tanah dalam perjuangan revolusi melawan penjajah Belanda dan juga Jepang yang telah lama mencengkramkan kuku penjajahannya di bumi Nusantara. Meski banyak yang tidak mengenal sosok Tan Malaka, tokoh ini sebenarnya mempunyai peran penting dalam memperjuangkan kemerdekaan Indonesia. Ia merupakan salah satu dari empat orang, dimana Presiden Soekarno menghendaki untuk melanjutkan tugas kepemimpinan Republik.1 Tan Malaka (1897-1949) dilahirkan di desa Pandan Gadang, tak jauh dari kecamatan Suliki Kabupaten Limopuluh koto, Payakumbuh, Sumatra Barat pada tahun 1897. Beliau dilahirkan dengan nama Ibrahim Bin Rasad. Ibunya bernama Rangkayo 1 Poeze Harry A, Tan Malaka, Gerakan Kiri, Dan Revolusi Indonesia: Agustus 1945-Maret 1946 (Jakarta: Yayasan Obor, 2008).hal 60 1 2 Sinah, putri dari salah satu orang yang disegani didesanya.2 Jika mengingat tempat kelahiran dan situasi sosial bumi Minangkabau ketika beliau tumbuh besar, sudah dapat dipastikan beliau mempelajari Agama Islam dengan cukup baik. Di dalam tradisi Minang pada masa itu, seorang laki-laki belumlah dapat dikatakan sebagai seorang lelaki sepenuhnya jika tidak pandai ber-Silat. Agaknya, dikarenakan situasi sosial yang demikianlah Tan Malaka (1897-1949) kecil belajar ilmu silat yang kemudian menjadi bekal dalam hidupnya untuk sekedar membela diri.3 Tidak sebagaimana RA Kartini, Tan Malaka memperjuangkan kemerdekaan Republik Indonesia dengan maksud membentuk suatu negara Republik yang mandiri dan lepas dari penjajahan. Bahkan ia menulis buku Naar de 'Republiek Indonesia' (Menuju Republik Indonesia) sejak tahun 1924.

    Southeast Asian Studies, Vol. 49, No. 2, September 2011 Blood-Brothers: The Communist Party of the Philippines and the Partai Komunis Indonesia Ramon Guillermo* This paper discusses the significant role of the Indonesian Communist movement in the formation of Jose Maria Sison as a leading Filipino Marxist radical and its possible influence on the founding of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) in 1968. After a study fellowship in Indonesia in 1962, Sison published pioneering translations of Chairil Anwar’s poetry and popularized matters pertaining to Indo- nesia during the Sukarno era through the journal Progressive Review. He also had a memorable and intellectually fruitful friendship with the Indonesian nationalist guerrilla and University of the Philippines graduate student Bakri Ilyas. A small but persistent controversy on the alleged plagiarization by Sison of Indonesian radical sources in the late 1960s and early 1970s will then be addressed through systematic textual analysis. The paper will propose some general theses on authorship, mod- ularity, adaptation, and dissemination of texts and ideas in twentieth-century radical movements. Finally, the article will assess the impact of the 1965–66 massacre in Indonesia on the revolutionary ideas and practice of the CPP. His thoughts on leading democracy put his figure as a leader judged authoritarian by his political opponents. This paper is a study of thought about Soekarno, especially his thinking about the concept of democracy which is considered as a political concept typical of Indonesian cultures. Key word: Soekarno, democracy PRELIMINARY Soekarno is one of the four founders of the Republic of Indonesia according to the version of Tempo Magazine, as political figures aligned with Mohammad Hatta, Sutan Sjahrir and Tan Malaka. Soekarno's thought of national politics placed himself as a great thinker that Indonesian ever had. In the typology of political thought, his nationality has been placed as a radical nationalist thinker, since his youthful interest in politics has been enormous. As an active politician, Soekarno poured many of his thinkers into speeches, articles and books. One of Soekarno's highly controversial and inviting notions of polemic up to now is the political thought of guided democracy. Young Soekarno's thoughts were filled with revolutionary idealism and anti-oppression, but at the end of his reign, he became a repressive and anti-democratic thinker.

    State Terrorism and Political Identity in Indonesia Approximately one million innocent Indonesians were killed by their fellow nationals, neighbours and kin at the height of an anti-communist campaign in the mid-1960s. This book investigates the profound political consequences of these mass killings in Indonesia upon public life in the subsequent decades, highlighting the historical speci®cities of the violence and compar- able incidents of identity politics in more recent times. Weaving a balance of theory with an empirically based analysis, the book examines how the spectre of communism and the trauma experienced in the latter half of the 1960s remain critical in understanding the dynamics of terror, coercion and consent today. Heryanto challenges the general belief that the periodic anti-communist witch-hunts of recent Indonesian history are largely a political tool used by a powerful military elite and authoritarian government. The book investigates what drove otherwise apolitical subjects to be complicit in the engul®ng cycles of witch-hunts. It argues that elements of what began as an anti-communist campaign took on a life of their own, increasingly operating independently of the violence and individual subjects who appeared to be manipulating the campaigns in the 1980s and 1990s. Despite the profound importance of the 1965±6 events it remains one of the most dicult and sensitive topics for public discussion in Indonesia today. State Terrorism and Political Identity in Indonesia is one of the ®rst books to fully discuss the problematic representation and impacts of a crucial moment of Indonesia's history that until recently has been largely unspoken.

I thought of the beautiful trips of exploration, the searches for a chapter or a loose page from some Tan Malaka text, of the moments of victory, when, in Pasar Senen let's say, a market still of somewhat dubious fame for its fishy dealings, one might one day find, amidst pans, sandals, and old recordings, a stenciled thriller-like, samizdat-like version of Pandangan Hidup (Weltanschauung) or even a copy of Madilog. One feared—not a few Indonesians had been searching the same way—that Tan Malaka's message would become stale if it did not reach us through this kind of adventure. For the two decades or so that I had known about Helen Jarvis' project, I thought of the day when these three handy, fat, respectable volumes would appear on my shelf, complete with index, bibliography, and notes, easy to browse through, on recycled paper and for only thirty dollars.1 Tan Malaka's monumental, moving, crazy, and wise autobiography, the warmest state­ ment by and about Indonesia during the first fifty years of the twentieth century, and maybe the warmest statement by and about the Asian revolution during the same period, is now available in English.

Sergeant Brian Patchett and Other Wall-Crossers by Paul Croxson, 2015 On July 6 1963, the East German News Agency, A.N.D, announced the defection of Brian Patchett stating that ‘he had been working on the monitoring of East German and Soviet radio communications’. This was partly untrue as no German communications were being monitored at Gatow and he couldn’t speak German. He had, however, seemingly defected. In 1953, No. 1 Wireless Regt., then based in Münster, set up a detachment manned by Intelligence Corps Voice Ops in Berlin known as Royal Signals Detachment, RAF Gatow. As was nearly always the case, no public mention of the Intelligence Corps contingent there was made. It was based at Gatow Airport, originally opened by Goering in 1936 as the Deutsche Verjehrsflugschule (DVS) – German Civil Aviation Pilots’ Training School) a covert organisation for training pilots for the Luftwaffe. Geoffrey Elliott, who also served there, in his book Secret Classrooms1 describes the camp and life, ‘The detachment was housed in an anonymous building on the road that ran through the pine trees along the northern perimeter of the airfield. The buildings had survived the flattening of Berlin surprisingly well, the only signs of damage being the heads and swastikas ruthlessly hammered off the eagles which still remained, set in stone on the Kaserne walls.
