Kata kunci : Alam dan Rantau, Materialisme, Dialektika dan Logika. x ABSTRACT Hananto Kusumo SANATA DHARMA UNIVERSITY YOGYAKARTA The title of this paper, namely: "The Rationality of Tan Malaka in Madilog as a Historical Movement (1897-1942)". This paper tries to understand and explore the structure of Tan Malaka's thinking as the Minangkabau people who decided to fight to Indonesia's independence in accordance understand what he believed, that is; Marxism. Understanding the formation of Tan Malaka's thinking which led to Materialism Dialectic Logic (Madilog) was not intended to form the image of a good character, noble and worthy of being a hero, but that more emphasis was an attempt to reread the thoughts of Tan Malaka and understood according to context. The main context must be understood is the Alam Minangkabau, where Tan Malaka was born and formed by the Minangkabau in a specific time and space. This is important because the cultural emphasis on self- Tan Malaka will be the basis when the meaning rantau travel (merantau). Alam and Rantau relationship is a dynamic relationship, like human relationships and the universe. The departure of Tan Malaka wandering in the Western world is an attempt to enrich Alam Minangkabau, the results of the quality of the absorbed Rantau Tan Malaka is Madilog (Dialektka materialism and logic). As an idea is Madilog Western rationality or way of thinking that is formed from the dialectic of history to lead the European community in Marxism. Western rationality is literally a conceptualized Tan Malaka in Madilog will look significantly contrary to the tradition in the east. Contemporary readings are important to look not as Madilog difference, but the quality will enrich Overseas Alam Minangkabau thinking in particular and Indonesia as a whole. Modern Indonesia is a place of intellectual diversity in a container that is; Bhineka Tunggal Ika by realizing the ultimate goal of independence, prosperity and equality. Keywords: Alam and Rantau, Materialism, Dialectics and Logic. xi.

Bahkan ia menulis buku Naar de 'Republiek Indonesia' (Menuju Republik Indonesia) sejak tahun 1924.

Southeast Asian Studies, Vol. 49, No. 2, September 2011 Blood-Brothers: The Communist Party of the Philippines and the Partai Komunis Indonesia Ramon Guillermo* This paper discusses the significant role of the Indonesian Communist movement in the formation of Jose Maria Sison as a leading Filipino Marxist radical and its possible influence on the founding of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) in 1968. After a study fellowship in Indonesia in 1962, Sison published pioneering translations of Chairil Anwar’s poetry and popularized matters pertaining to Indo- nesia during the Sukarno era through the journal Progressive Review. He also had a memorable and intellectually fruitful friendship with the Indonesian nationalist guerrilla and University of the Philippines graduate student Bakri Ilyas. A small but persistent controversy on the alleged plagiarization by Sison of Indonesian radical sources in the late 1960s and early 1970s will then be addressed through systematic textual analysis. The paper will propose some general theses on authorship, mod- ularity, adaptation, and dissemination of texts and ideas in twentieth-century radical movements. Finally, the article will assess the impact of the 1965–66 massacre in Indonesia on the revolutionary ideas and practice of the CPP. Keywords: Communist Party of the Philippines, Partai Komunis Indonesia, Jose Maria Sison, Dipa Nusantara Aidit, Philippine Society and Revolution, Maphilindo “The thirty-five years history of the CPI is not a tranquil and peaceful one; it is a history which has gone through many turmoils and many dangers, many mistakes, and many sacrifices. But it is also a heroic history, a joyful history, a history with many lessons, a successful history.” — D.

  • Soekarno's Political Thinking About Guided Democracy
e-ISSN : 2528 - 2069 SOEKARNO’S POLITICAL THINKING ABOUT GUIDED DEMOCRACY Author : Gili Argenti and Dini Sri Istining Dias Government Science, State University of Singaperbangsa Karawang (UNSIKA) Email : [email protected] and [email protected] ABSTRACT Soekarno is one of the leaders of the four founders of the Republic of Indonesia, his political thinking is very broad, one of his political thinking about democracy is guided democracy into controversy, in his youth Soekarno was known as a very revolutionary, humanist and progressive figure of political thinkers of his day. His thoughts on leading democracy put his figure as a leader judged authoritarian by his political opponents. This paper is a study of thought about Soekarno, especially his thinking about the concept of democracy which is considered as a political concept typical of Indonesian cultures. Key word: Soekarno, democracy PRELIMINARY Soekarno is one of the four founders of the Republic of Indonesia according to the version of Tempo Magazine, as political figures aligned with Mohammad Hatta, Sutan Sjahrir and Tan Malaka. Soekarno's thought of national politics placed himself as a great thinker that Indonesian ever had. In the typology of political thought, his nationality has been placed as a radical nationalist thinker, since his youthful interest in politics has been enormous. As an active politician, Soekarno poured many of his thinkers into speeches, articles and books. One of Soekarno's highly controversial and inviting notions of polemic up to now is the political thought of guided democracy. Young Soekarno's thoughts were filled with revolutionary idealism and anti-oppression, but at the end of his reign, he became a repressive and anti-democratic thinker.

  • State Terrorism and Political Identity in Indonesia
State Terrorism and Political Identity in Indonesia Approximately one million innocent Indonesians were killed by their fellow nationals, neighbours and kin at the height of an anti-communist campaign in the mid-1960s. This book investigates the profound political consequences of these mass killings in Indonesia upon public life in the subsequent decades, highlighting the historical speci®cities of the violence and compar- able incidents of identity politics in more recent times. Weaving a balance of theory with an empirically based analysis, the book examines how the spectre of communism and the trauma experienced in the latter half of the 1960s remain critical in understanding the dynamics of terror, coercion and consent today. Heryanto challenges the general belief that the periodic anti-communist witch-hunts of recent Indonesian history are largely a political tool used by a powerful military elite and authoritarian government. The book investigates what drove otherwise apolitical subjects to be complicit in the engul®ng cycles of witch-hunts. It argues that elements of what began as an anti-communist campaign took on a life of their own, increasingly operating independently of the violence and individual subjects who appeared to be manipulating the campaigns in the 1980s and 1990s. Despite the profound importance of the 1965±6 events it remains one of the most dicult and sensitive topics for public discussion in Indonesia today. State Terrorism and Political Identity in Indonesia is one of the ®rst books to fully discuss the problematic representation and impacts of a crucial moment of Indonesia's history that until recently has been largely unspoken.

T a n M a l a k a : " J u s t a s A r t is a n s , W h e n G a t h e r e d T o g e t h e r " Rudolf Mrazek i There has been, admittedly, apprehension over the past twenty years or so, about what if Helen Jarvis should finally make it. I thought of the beautiful trips of exploration, the searches for a chapter or a loose page from some Tan Malaka text, of the moments of victory, when, in Pasar Senen let's say, a market still of somewhat dubious fame for its fishy dealings, one might one day find, amidst pans, sandals, and old recordings, a stenciled thriller-like, samizdat-like version of Pandangan Hidup (Weltanschauung) or even a copy of Madilog. One feared—not a few Indonesians had been searching the same way—that Tan Malaka's message would become stale if it did not reach us through this kind of adventure. For the two decades or so that I had known about Helen Jarvis' project, I thought of the day when these three handy, fat, respectable volumes would appear on my shelf, complete with index, bibliography, and notes, easy to browse through, on recycled paper and for only thirty dollars.1 Tan Malaka's monumental, moving, crazy, and wise autobiography, the warmest state ment by and about Indonesia during the first fifty years of the twentieth century, and maybe the warmest statement by and about the Asian revolution during the same period, is now available in English.

  • The Political Thought of Tan Malaka
The Political Thought of Tan Malaka Oliver Crawford, Trinity College, University of Cambridge December 2018 This dissertation is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy ‘The Political Thought of Tan Malaka’ Oliver Crawford Abstract In the course of a fairly brief lifetime, lasting only a little over fifty years (1897-1949), Tan Malaka was variously a schoolteacher, the chair of the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI), a Comintern agent, a political exile, and a revolutionary leader. He travelled the world, living for spells in the Netherlands, Germany, Russia, China, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. Tan Malaka’s colourful life and political career have attracted comment from historians, but there has not yet been an in-depth treatment of his ideas, even though he produced a large corpus of writings and was acknowledged to be among the foremost political intellects of his generation in Indonesia. This thesis is an analysis and contextualization of Tan Malaka’s political thought. It places his writings within a series of contemporary debates: on the nature of the Indonesian past and the country’s potential for revolution; on imperialism and the post-colonial future of Asia; on the relationship between Islam, capitalism, and Communism; on the reformation of Indonesian thinking; and on the appropriate strategy and goals for the Indonesian revolution. These debates, and Tan Malaka’s interventions within them, reveal that Indonesia during the ‘national awakening’ period (1900-50) was the scene of great intellectual innovation, where foreign and indigenous concepts were fused, adapted and reworked. Tan Malaka’s writings provide a particularly vivid example of this, combining as they do the concepts and language of Marxism, Islamic morality, and Minangkabau custom, sometimes in tension, in other places flowing together without apparent strain.

DEALING WITH A COMMON QUESTION AND POSSIBLE ANSWERS Al Makin Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University, Yogyakarta email: [email protected] Abstract: This article is an attempt to expose the idea of, or possibility to reclaim, Indonesian philosophy, but it is not the intention of this article to go into a detailed reading of particular works. It aims at offering a modest proposal, or an outline, sketching many possibilities of reading Indonesian works. It deals with a daunting question often posed by Indonesian students and scholars whether Indonesia can produce a philosopher or philosophical works. This article starts with addressing the question and looks for possible answers through classical Indonesian works not only from writing tradition but also material cultures, such as architectural works. It argues that Indonesian works are materials and sources worth rereading and reinterpreting through which Indonesian philosophers or philosophical works can be reclaimed, or at least unearthed. Although these works may not sound philosophical, the ways in which readers appreciate them can lead to the discovery of a unique Indonesian philosophy. Keywords: Indonesian philosophy, reinterpretation and rereading, reclaiming Indonesian philosophers, classical manuscripts, material works, modern works.
