Furthermore, it shows that Islam and Communism were inextricably intertwined in the motivations of participants in the 1926-1927 uprisings. is paper will examine four main strands of what I call “conciliatory discourses,” which drew on both Islam and Communism. Firstly, the autobiography and published writings of Communist Party of Indonesia (Partai Komunis Indonesia, henceforth PKI) leader Tan Malaka; secondly, excerpts from two newspapers edited by the labor organizer known to the Dutch as the Red Haji, Haji Misbach, and his associates; thirdly, Tjokroaminoto’s 1924 book, Islam and Socialism; and nally, Soekarno’s 1926 article, Nationalism, Islam and Marxism. I argue that these sources collectively represent how pervasive, and perhaps even paradigmatic, both Islam and Communism were to anti-colonial activists in the pre-1927 period. In analyzing vernacular print culture, this analysis deliberately privileges the discursive over the organizational. Rather than focus on the existence of organizational links between Muslim activists and Communist cadres in the NEI, or the transmission of instructions, aid and expertise from the USSR to the PKI, this paper is concerned instead with the highly original and progressive arguments made by prominent anti-colonial activists of surprisingly varied backgrounds. ese activists felt compelled to engage with the Islamic milieu in which they operated, as well as Marxist ideas that had been transplanted to the NEI. eir writings show that they emphasized the importance of social justice in Islam, and interpreted Communism or Socialism as effective vehicles for the achievement of Islamic goals within the framework of anti-colonial resistance. is paper makes no specic conceptual distinction between Communism and Socialism, because discrete Communist and Socialist factions did not

  • Nasionalisme Islam: Telaah Pemikiran Dan Kiprah Hadji Agus Salim
Haji Agus Salim is one of Islamic nationalist leaders who lived in three regimes; the Netherlands, Japan, and early Indonesian independence. Salim’s thought was influenced by the Dutch secular education and his interaction with transnational reformers like Jamaluddin al-Afgani and the works of other reformers when he became a translator at the Dutch consulate in Jeddah in 1906. Islamic Nationalism formulated by Salim wanted to fight the rights of freedom that has been seized by the Dutch government based on Islamic principles. Islamic nationalism was different from secular nationalism formulated by Sukarno and Hatta, when the second separated between nationalism and religion.

  • Konsep Pendidikan Dalam Perspektif Tan Malaka (Tokoh Revolusioner Prakemerdekaan)

  • What Is Indonesian Islam?
    M. Laffan, draft paper prepared for discussion at the UCLA symposium ‘Islam and Southeast Asia’, May 15 2006 What is Indonesian Islam? Michael Laffan, History Department, Princeton University* Abstract This paper is a preliminary essay thinking about the concept of an Indonesian Islam. After considering the impact of the ideas of Geertz and Benda in shaping the current contours of what is assumed to fit within this category, and how their notions were built on the principle that the region was far more multivocal in the past than the present, it turns to consider whether, prior to the existance of Indonesia, there was ever such a notion as Jawi Islam and questions what modern Indonesians make of their own Islamic history and its impact on the making of their religious subjectivities. What about Indonesian Islam? Before I begin I would like to present you with three recent statements reflecting either directly or indirectly on assumptions about Indonesian Islam. The first is the response of an Australian academic to the situation in Aceh after the 2004 tsunami, the second and third have been made of late by Indonesian scholars The traditionalist Muslims of Aceh, with their mystical, Sufistic approach to life and faith, are a world away from the fundamentalist Islamists of Saudi Arabia and some other Arab states. The Acehnese have never been particularly open to the bigoted "reformism" of radical Islamist groups linked to Saudi Arabia. … Perhaps it is for this reason that aid for Aceh has been so slow coming from wealthy Arab nations such as Saudi Arabia.1 * This, admittedly in-house, piece presented at the UCLA Colloquium on Islam and Southeast Asia: Local, National and Transnational Studies on May 15, 2006, is very much a tentative first stab in the direction I am taking in my current project on the Making of Indonesian Islam.

  • BAB I PENDAHULUAN A. Latar Belakang Tan Malaka, Bapak Madilog, Adalah Salah Satu Sosok Yang
Bahkan ia menulis buku Naar de 'Republiek Indonesia' (Menuju Republik Indonesia) sejak tahun 1924.

Southeast Asian Studies, Vol. 49, No. 2, September 2011 Blood-Brothers: The Communist Party of the Philippines and the Partai Komunis Indonesia Ramon Guillermo* This paper discusses the significant role of the Indonesian Communist movement in the formation of Jose Maria Sison as a leading Filipino Marxist radical and its possible influence on the founding of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) in 1968. After a study fellowship in Indonesia in 1962, Sison published pioneering translations of Chairil Anwar’s poetry and popularized matters pertaining to Indo- nesia during the Sukarno era through the journal Progressive Review. He also had a memorable and intellectually fruitful friendship with the Indonesian nationalist guerrilla and University of the Philippines graduate student Bakri Ilyas. A small but persistent controversy on the alleged plagiarization by Sison of Indonesian radical sources in the late 1960s and early 1970s will then be addressed through systematic textual analysis. The paper will propose some general theses on authorship, mod- ularity, adaptation, and dissemination of texts and ideas in twentieth-century radical movements. Finally, the article will assess the impact of the 1965–66 massacre in Indonesia on the revolutionary ideas and practice of the CPP. Keywords: Communist Party of the Philippines, Partai Komunis Indonesia, Jose Maria Sison, Dipa Nusantara Aidit, Philippine Society and Revolution, Maphilindo “The thirty-five years history of the CPI is not a tranquil and peaceful one; it is a history which has gone through many turmoils and many dangers, many mistakes, and many sacrifices.
