BBuucckk Viento del esteeste,,,, viento del oeste 17 de gener de 2017 BIOGRAFIA Pearl Comfort Sydenstricker va néixer a Hillsboro (Virginia, EEUU) el 26 de juny de 1892. Filla d’uns missioners presbiterians va viure a Xina, la meitat de la seva vida, era bilingüe. Els estudis els va realitzar a EEUU. En 1917 es va casar amb John Lossing Buck i adoptà el seu cognom, va mantenir l’inicial del seu. El naixement de la seva filla, Carol, amb un retard mental sever i no poder tenir més fills la van marcar. Va ser professora de literatura anglesa a la universitat de Nanking. En 1925, va adoptar a Janice. En 1934 es va traslladar de forma permanent a EEUU amb el seu segon marit, l’editor dels seus llibres, Richard J. Walsh, i van comprar una granja, Green Hills Farm a Pennsilvanià. Van adoptar sis nens. Aquesta granja forma part del registre d’Edificis Històrics, i rep més de 15.000 visites cada any. Des de que va tornar a EEUU va ser activista dels drets civils i de la dona. Va escriure més de 85 llibres, de gèneres molt diferents: relat, teatre, guió cinematogràfic, poesia, literatura infantil, biografia i fins i tot un llibre de cuina. El seu estil senzill i directe, i la seva preocupació pels valors es basen en la novel·la xina. En 1931 va publicar La buena tierra , que es va convertir en el llibre més venut en 1931, i l’any 1932 va obtenir el premi Pulitzer. En 1938 va obtenir Premi Nobel de Literatura, i es va convertir en la primera dona nord americana en guanyar-lo. També és molt coneguda l’obra que llegirem al Club de lectura: Viento del este, viento del oeste (1930) i La estirpe del dragón (1942). Moltes s’han portat al cinema. Va morir a Vermont, el 6 de març de 1973, amb 81 anys. En primer lugar, por la distancia geográfica que separa los dos ejes entre los que oscila este trabajo, oriente y occidente; en segundo lugar, porque es un viaje también en el tiempo, trasladándonos al retrato de una época recogida con enorme maestría por su autora, protagonizada por unos entrañables personajes, y que ya no existe; en tercer lugar, porque ha sido un proceso de aprendizaje y desarrollo personal, donde no han faltado nuevos retos y barreras a la vuelta de cada esquina, al más puro estilo del “camino” o dao taoísta.     LETTERS TO THE LEADERS OF CHINA KONGJIAN YU AND THE FUTURE OF THE CHINESE CITY I cross paths often with the spirit of Pearl S. Buck, whose parable of greed and sustainability in China, The Good Earth, was one of the most memora- ble novels I read as a teenager. Buck penned the book in an attic room on the campus of Nanjing University, where she lived for more than a decade and where I often visit. (My wife teaches architecture at the school.) Buck also lived briefly in Ithaca, New York on two occasions, residing both times no more than a ten-minute walk from my office at Cornell University. She THE BUCKS came with her husband, John Lossing Buck, a 1914 graduate of the New York State College of Agriculture at Cornell who returned for a master’s degree in 1925 and a doctorate in 1933. Lossing, as he was known, was a pioneering agronomist who developed a keen interest in China as an un- STOPPED dergraduate thanks to his classmate and friend Hu Shih, the scholarly re- former who helped launch the May Fourth Movement and served as the Republic of China’s ambassador to the United States on the eve of World War II.
