© 2013 Yi-ling Lin CULTURAL ENGAGEMENT IN MISSIONARY CHINA: AMERICAN MISSIONARY NOVELS 1880-1930 BY YI-LING LIN DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Comparative Literature in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2013 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral committee: Professor Waïl S. Hassan, Chair Professor Emeritus Leon Chai, Director of Research Professor Emeritus Michael Palencia-Roth Associate Professor Robert Tierney Associate Professor Gar y G. Xu Associate Professor Rania Huntington, University of Wisconsin at Madison Abstract From a comparative standpoint, the American Protestant missionary enterprise in China was built on a paradox in cross-cultural encounters. In order to convert the Chinese—whose religion they rejected—American missionaries adopted strategies of assimilation (e.g. learning Chinese and associating with the Chinese) to facilitate their work. My dissertation explores how American Protestant missionaries negotiated the rejection-assimilation paradox involved in their missionary work and forged a cultural identification with China in their English novels set in China between the late Qing and 1930. I argue that the missionaries’ novelistic expression of that identification was influenced by many factors: their targeted audience, their motives, their work, and their perceptions of the missionary enterprise, cultural difference, and their own missionary identity. Hence, missionary novels may not necessarily be about conversion, the missionaries’ primary objective but one that suggests their resistance to Chinese culture, or at least its religion. Instead, the missionary novels I study culminate in a non-conversion theme that problematizes the possibility of cultural assimilation and identification over ineradicable racial and cultural differences.

  • Pearl S. Buck and Phenylketonuria (PKU)
Journal of the History of the Neurosciences 2004, Vol. 13, No. 1, pp. 44–57 Pearl S. Buck and Phenylketonuria (PKU) Stanley Finger? and Shawn E. Christ Psychology Department, Washington University, St. Louis, MO, USA ABSTRACT In 1921, Pearl S. Buck gave birth to a daughter, Carol, who became severely retarded and was eventually institutionalized at the Vineland Training School in New Jersey. To help pay for her daughter’s care, Buck wrote The Good Earth in 1931, and then other novels and biographies about her life in China, for which she was awarded the Nobel and Pulitzer Prizes, and honored around the world. Years later, she published The Child Who Never Grew, a short piece about her daughter’s retardation that also revealed her desperate search for answers and good clinical care. Asbjørn Følling distinguished phenylketonuria (PKU) from other forms of childhood retardation in the mid-1930s, and new assays and biochemical findings eventually led to ways to circumvent the devastating effects of PKU. But for Carol Buck, these advances came too late. It was not until the 1960s that physicians confirmed that her severe retardation was caused by PKU. Keywords: Pearl S. Buck, Carol Buck, Phenylketonuria (PKU), Mental Retardation, Asbjørn Følling, Vineland Training School, Rehabilitation, The Child Who Never Grew She wrote many fine books and won notable Three months after her birth, the Sydenstrickers prizes, but her major humanitarian work was returned to Chinkiang (Zhenjiang), a port city with children, some of them sadly stigmatized on the Yangtze River in the Kiangsu (Jiangsu) like her own daughter.

  • Suppression and Restoration of the Society of Jesus in China
SUPPRESSION AND RESTORATION OF THE SOCIETY OF JESUS IN CHINA by Fr Fernando Mateos S.J. Contributor’s Abstract and Profile Fr. Mateos' s thirty-two pages well documented paper is based on Jesuit correspondence and original documents and depicts three main climax periods of the Jesuit exile in China; suppression of the Society, tribulation of its former members and then their final incorporation into the New Society. The paper gives overview of the Jesuits geographical dispersion and activities in various locations in China; it also stresses the crucial role of superiors and their decisions, their sorrows and afflictions especially manifested by Fathers; François Bourgeois, Superior of the French Jesuits and by Jean Amiot, an astronomer and writer. In 1778, Fr. Louis de Poirot, one from five ex-Jesuits who survived in Peking wrote several letters to the Congregation of Propaganda requesting the re-establishment of the Society of Jesus in China. In the end, the 78-year-old de Poirot remained in Peking alone, and peacefully passed away on December 13, 1813, eight months before the solemn publication of Pius VII’s Bull, “Sollicitudo Omnium Ecclesiarum”, restoring the Society of Jesus in the whole world. Here comes account of the revival of the Jesuit presence in China, its circumstances, challenges and opportunities opened to the Chinese mission in the New Society. Fernando MATEOS, SJ, 沈起元 is long date historian of the Chinese Province of the Society of Jesus. He is also a member of the Taipei Ricci Institute. He authored several books: China: mission de dolor, Siglo de las Missiones, Bilbao, 1961; China, Operación Fuga, Mensajero, Bilbao, 1967; China Jesuits in East- Asia: Starting from zero, 1949-1957, TEC, Taibei, 1995; and co-authored Diccionario Español de la Lengua China, Espasa-Calpe, Madrid, 1 Table of Contents I.

GENDER, CLASS AND RACE IN PEARL S. BUCK'S SELECT NOVELS ABSTRACT THESIS SUBMITTED FOR THE AWARD OF THE DEGREE OF doctor of $I)tIo£(opfip IN ENGLISH BY AYSHA MUNIRA RASHEED : 7^6^ DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY ALIGARH (INDIA) 2009 Abstract' Introduction The objective of this study is to find but how human division and categorisation result in hierarchy with reference to Pearl S. Buck's novels. The main categories that the study concerns are gender, class and race. The first question that is probed is whether suspending hierarchical categorisation is possible. The 'mental schemes' have to be revised in order to make hierarchy and its by product, human disdain a thing of past. The task is monumental and yet necessary. The novels concerned reveal that the problem is entrenched deeply in the human mind. Pearl S. Buck, taking cognizance of the problem, proves that the change is to be brought about by pragmatic thinking. With her efforts to uplift mixed race children, she makes immense effort to sensitise people vis-a- vis the power disequilibrium in the human world. Taking stock of the global issues as well as the problems at the domestic level in America at the time of the two world wars, she condemns fascist trends that the whole world followed. The nations are gendered, classed and racialised to justify the power equation at a global level. At a microcosmic level, the characters in her fictive world seem to be suffering from the same fate. The present study sees the microcosmic as well as macrocosmic level problems that arise due to gender, class and race based inequality and how they are manifest in the novels concerned.

The Empson family had lived in East Yorkshire since at least the mid-17th century, building the Tudor-style Yokefleet Hall in about 1870. The Estate remained in the family until the late 1970s, with successive generations of close relatives visiting the Hall during vacations. Empson’s father died when William was ten. The boy’s formal education began at Pretoria (or Praetoria) House, West Folkestone, and in 1920 he won a scholarship to Winchester College.
