Further reproduction prohibited without permission. ABSTRACT CHINA AS DEPICTED BY WESTERN NOVELS Virginia S. York The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the use of novels to supplement reading lists for American undergraduates studying the history of China. This study advocates that professors should seriously consider inter­ spersing scholarly nonfictional works with fiction. An evaluation of the nine historical novels analyzed in this dissertation demonstrate that students can obtain a more realistic and accurate view of China by reading prudently- selected novels. The representative novels are: Manchu by Robert S. Elegant, Mandarin by Robert S. Elegant, The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck, Jade by Patricia M. Barr, The Warlord by Malcolm Bosse, From A Far Land by Robert S. Elegant, The Three Daughters of Madame Liang by Pearl S. Buck, Dynasty by Robert S. Elegant, and Spring Moon by Bette Boa Lord. This study is organized into four chapters. In the first chapter, information on the five authors is provided and the novels are described. The novelists are considered individually, and the examination of their backgrounds reveals that each of the writers spent considerable time in East Asia. The authors' first-hand knowledge of China gives credibility to their narratives. The nine novels are critiqued in chronological order. Virginia Sumerford York substantiate, as well as, point out deficiencies in the novels. Specific examples of how students' knowledge of China can be strengthened and enhanced by reading these works are provided in Chapters II and III. In Chapter II the way a reader can vicariously learn about Chinese customs and culture through a story is discussed. The narratives introduce the reader to daily routines, family relation­ ships, religions, vocations, and avocations, which instill a greater understanding of China. In Chapter III the nine novels are considered in greater detail, as each pertains to a specific period of history. In this chapter, a novel is shown to offer an extra dimension to an event in history that a scholarly text cannot. The novels place characters in historical settings to voice bias, goals, or aspirations of the people living in a particular time frame. The argument for the use of novels by college professors is the topic of the final chapter. The fundamental premise of these professors is that historical novels stimulate the students' interest in history. The description of methods and techniques used on several college campuses illustrates that novels add vitality to history. These professors supplement reading requirements with selected novels because the genre can provide a surprisingly accurate portrayal of history. Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. Further reproduction prohibited without permission. INTRODUCTION Western novels seldom appear on the reading list for American college students studying the history of China. The probable reason is that most professors prefer that their students read scholarly works. This poses a problem of the language barrier if the student is to seek original materials, for most American students are unacquainted with the Chinese language. Chinese characters are difficult to learn and few American universities offer courses in languages of the East Asian countries. Usually a graduate student concentrating in Chinese studies learns Chinese, but an undergraduate who is only taking an introductory course in the history of China does not. The undergraduate is limited to secondary sources written in English.

He used to preach to his patients before he treated them. Due to his kind and gentle manner, his faithful attention and skillful practice, he became known as “the model medical missionary.” He thought that medical science in China was at a rather low level, and that the knowledge of anatomy and surgery in ancient Greece and Rome was much superior to anything in nineteenth-century China. Therefore, he attempted to introduce the well-establishes principles and facts of Western medical science to China. Although Hobson was a medical missionary, he did more to promote the study of science in China than any other men of their time. He was the first and for some time most influential Protestant writer on science in the Chinese language. Hobson presented a broad range of scientific knowledge pitched to a general audience, borrowing Chinese terms from those in common use. During the 1850s, he wrote five books on medical science, which were widely regarded as the standard works in this field. His book, bowu xinbian(Natural philosophy and natural history), which was published in 1855 and provided a general introduction to chemistry, physics, astronomy, geography and zoology, was described as like “the dawn of a new era upon Chinese minds.” His Chinese translations for the chemical elements oxygen, hydrogen, and nitrogen, yangqi(nourishing gas), qingqi(light gas), and danqi(diluting gas), are still in use today.

Xu Associate Professor Rania Huntington, University of Wisconsin at Madison Abstract From a comparative standpoint, the American Protestant missionary enterprise in China was built on a paradox in cross-cultural encounters. In order to convert the Chinese—whose religion they rejected—American missionaries adopted strategies of assimilation (e.g. learning Chinese and associating with the Chinese) to facilitate their work. My dissertation explores how American Protestant missionaries negotiated the rejection-assimilation paradox involved in their missionary work and forged a cultural identification with China in their English novels set in China between the late Qing and 1930. I argue that the missionaries’ novelistic expression of that identification was influenced by many factors: their targeted audience, their motives, their work, and their perceptions of the missionary enterprise, cultural difference, and their own missionary identity. Hence, missionary novels may not necessarily be about conversion, the missionaries’ primary objective but one that suggests their resistance to Chinese culture, or at least its religion. Instead, the missionary novels I study culminate in a non-conversion theme that problematizes the possibility of cultural assimilation and identification over ineradicable racial and cultural differences.

    INTRODUCTION THE PULITZER PRIZES FOR INTERNATIONAL REPORTING IN THE THIRD PHASE OF THEIR DEVELOPMENT, 1963-1977 Heinz-Dietrich Fischer The rivalry between the U.S.A. and the U.S.S.R. having shifted, in part, to predomi- nance in the fields of space-travel and satellites in the upcoming space age, thus opening a new dimension in the Cold War,1 there were still existing other controversial issues in policy and journalism. "While the colorful space competition held the forefront of public atten- tion," Hohenberg remarks, "the trained diplomatic correspondents of the major newspa- pers and wire services in the West carried on almost alone the difficult and unpopular East- West negotiations to achieve atomic control and regulation and reduction of armaments. The public seemed to want to ignore the hard fact that rockets capable of boosting people into orbit for prolonged periods could also deliver atomic warheads to any part of the earth. It continued, therefore, to be the task of the responsible press to assign competent and highly trained correspondents to this forbidding subject. They did not have the glamor of TV or the excitement of a space shot to focus public attention on their work. Theirs was the responsibility of obliging editors to publish material that was complicated and not at all easy for an indifferent public to grasp. It had to be done by abandoning the familiar cliches of journalism in favor of the care and the art of the superior historian .. On such an assignment, no correspondent was a 'foreign' correspondent. The term was outdated.

Christ Psychology Department, Washington University, St. Louis, MO, USA ABSTRACT In 1921, Pearl S. Buck gave birth to a daughter, Carol, who became severely retarded and was eventually institutionalized at the Vineland Training School in New Jersey. To help pay for her daughter’s care, Buck wrote The Good Earth in 1931, and then other novels and biographies about her life in China, for which she was awarded the Nobel and Pulitzer Prizes, and honored around the world. Years later, she published The Child Who Never Grew, a short piece about her daughter’s retardation that also revealed her desperate search for answers and good clinical care. Asbjørn Følling distinguished phenylketonuria (PKU) from other forms of childhood retardation in the mid-1930s, and new assays and biochemical findings eventually led to ways to circumvent the devastating effects of PKU. But for Carol Buck, these advances came too late. It was not until the 1960s that physicians confirmed that her severe retardation was caused by PKU. Keywords: Pearl S. I argue that the situated tactics of courtly literature use genealogical and geographical paradigms to redefine national sovereignty. Before the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588, before the divorce trials of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon in the 1530s, a rich and complex network of dynastic, economic, and political alliances existed between medieval England and the Iberian kingdoms. The marriages of John of Gaunt’s two daughters to the Castilian and Portuguese kings created a legacy of Anglo-Iberian cultural exchange ii that is evident in the literature and manuscript culture of both England and Iberia. Because England, Castile, and Portugal all saw the rise of new dynastic lines at the end of the fourteenth century, the subsequent literature produced at their courts is preoccupied with issues of genealogy, just rule, and political consent. Dynastic foundation narratives compensate for the uncertainties of succession by evoking the longue durée of national histories—of Trojan diaspora narratives, of Roman rule, of apostolic foundation—and situating them within universalizing historical modes.

    ABSTRACT Liang Fa’s Quanshi liangyan and Its Impact on the Taiping Movement Sukjoo Kim, Ph.D. Mentor: Rosalie Beck, Ph.D. Scholars of the Taiping Movement have assumed that Liang Fa’s Quanshi liangyan 勸世良言 (Good Words to Admonish the Age, being Nine Miscellaneous Christian Tracts) greatly influenced Hong Xiuquan, but very little has been written on the role of Liang’s work. The main reason is that even though hundreds of copies were distributed in the early nineteenth century, only four survived the destruction which followed the failure of the Taiping Movement. This dissertation therefore explores the extent of the Christian influence of Liang’s nine tracts on Hong and the Taiping Movement. This study begins with an introduction to China in the nineteenth century and the early missions of western countries in China. The second chapter focuses on the life and work of Liang. His religious background was in Confucianism and Buddhism, but when he encountered Robert Morrison and William Milne, he identified with Christianity. The third chapter discusses the story of Hong especially examining Hong’s acquisition of Liang’s Quanshi liangyan and Hong’s revelatory dream, both of which serve as motives for the establishment of the Society of God Worshippers and the Taiping Movement. The fourth chapter develops Liang’s key ideas from his Quanshi liangyan and compares them with Hong’s beliefs, as found in official documents of the Taipings. The fifth chapter describes Hong’s beliefs and the actual practices of the Taiping Movement and compares them with Liang’s key ideas.
