Chyi-Shan, Kaohsiung County Tel: 07-6618851#2400 Fax: 07-6618850 E-mail: [email protected] Abstract: Hobson’s success in China was not only based on the medical practice and his religious work, but also on his efforts in introducing natural science to the country. He used to preach to his patients before he treated them. Due to his kind and gentle manner, his faithful attention and skillful practice, he became known as “the model medical missionary.” He thought that medical science in China was at a rather low level, and that the knowledge of anatomy and surgery in ancient Greece and Rome was much superior to anything in nineteenth-century China. Therefore, he attempted to introduce the well-establishes principles and facts of Western medical science to China. Although Hobson was a medical missionary, he did more to promote the study of science in China than any other men of their time. He was the first and for some time most influential Protestant writer on science in the Chinese language. Hobson presented a broad range of scientific knowledge pitched to a general audience, borrowing Chinese terms from those in common use. During the 1850s, he wrote five books on medical science, which were widely regarded as the standard works in this field. His book, bowu xinbian(Natural philosophy and natural history), which was published in 1855 and provided a general introduction to chemistry, physics, astronomy, geography and zoology, was described as like “the dawn of a new era upon Chinese minds.” His Chinese translations for the chemical elements oxygen, hydrogen, and nitrogen, yangqi(nourishing gas), qingqi(light gas), and danqi(diluting gas), are still in use today. -

Xu Associate Professor Rania Huntington, University of Wisconsin at Madison Abstract From a comparative standpoint, the American Protestant missionary enterprise in China was built on a paradox in cross-cultural encounters. In order to convert the Chinese—whose religion they rejected—American missionaries adopted strategies of assimilation (e.g. learning Chinese and associating with the Chinese) to facilitate their work. My dissertation explores how American Protestant missionaries negotiated the rejection-assimilation paradox involved in their missionary work and forged a cultural identification with China in their English novels set in China between the late Qing and 1930. I argue that the missionaries’ novelistic expression of that identification was influenced by many factors: their targeted audience, their motives, their work, and their perceptions of the missionary enterprise, cultural difference, and their own missionary identity. Hence, missionary novels may not necessarily be about conversion, the missionaries’ primary objective but one that suggests their resistance to Chinese culture, or at least its religion. Instead, the missionary novels I study culminate in a non-conversion theme that problematizes the possibility of cultural assimilation and identification over ineradicable racial and cultural differences. -

Christ Psychology Department, Washington University, St. Louis, MO, USA ABSTRACT In 1921, Pearl S. Buck gave birth to a daughter, Carol, who became severely retarded and was eventually institutionalized at the Vineland Training School in New Jersey. To help pay for her daughter’s care, Buck wrote The Good Earth in 1931, and then other novels and biographies about her life in China, for which she was awarded the Nobel and Pulitzer Prizes, and honored around the world. Years later, she published The Child Who Never Grew, a short piece about her daughter’s retardation that also revealed her desperate search for answers and good clinical care. Asbjørn Følling distinguished phenylketonuria (PKU) from other forms of childhood retardation in the mid-1930s, and new assays and biochemical findings eventually led to ways to circumvent the devastating effects of PKU. But for Carol Buck, these advances came too late. It was not until the 1960s that physicians confirmed that her severe retardation was caused by PKU. Keywords: Pearl S. Dorothea Lange 1934
Dorothea Lange 1934 Documentary photographer Dorothea Lange (1895–1965) is best known for her work during the 1930s with Roosevelt's Farm Security Administration (FSA). Born in New Jersey, Lange studied photography at Columbia University, then moved to San Francisco in 1919 earning a living as a successful portrait photographer. In 1935 in the midst of the Great Depression, Lange brought her large-format Graflex camera out of the studio and onto the streets. Her photos of the homeless and unemployed in San Francisco's breadlines, labor demonstrations, and soup kitchens led to a job with the FSA. From 1935 to 1939, Lange's arresting FSA images—drawing upon her strength as a portrait photographer—brought the plight of the nation's poor and forgotten peoples, especially sharecroppers, displaced families, and migrant workers, into the public eye. Her image "Migrant Mother" is arguably the best-known documentary photograph of the 20th century and has become a symbol of resilience in the face of adversity. Lange's reports from the field included not just photographs, but the words of the people with whom she'd spoken, quoted directly. "Somethin' is radical White Angel Breadline, 1933 wrong," one told her; another said, "I don't believe the President (Roosevelt) knows what's happening to us here." Lange also included her own observations. "They have built homes here out of nothing," she wrote, referring to the cardboard and plywood "Okievilles" scattered throughout California's Central Valley. "They have planted trees and flowers. These flimsy shacks represent many a last stand to maintain self-respect." At the age of seven Lange contracted polio, which left her right leg and foot noticeably weakened. -

She told me her age, that she was thirty-two. that they had been living on frozen vegetables from the surrounding fields, and birds that the children killed.” —Dorothea Lange Dorothea Lange's poignant image of a mother and her children on the brink of starvation is as moving today as when it first appeared in 1936. Lange took five pictures of this striking woman, who lived in a makeshift shelter with her husband and seven children in a Nipomo, California, pea-picker's camp. Within twenty-four hours of making the photographs, Lange presented them to an editor at the San Francisco News, who alerted the federal government to the migrants' plight. The newspaper then printed two of Lange's images with a report that the government was rushing in 20,000 pounds of food, to rescue the workers. Lange made this photograph while working for the Resettlement Administration, a government agency dedicated to documenting the devastating effects of the Depression during the 1930s. Her image depicts the hardship endured by migratory farm workers and provides evidence of the compelling power of photographs to move people to action.
