ASHPRINGTON WI NEWSLETTER March 2017

Hello Everyone,

Our Open Meeting for this month is about The Mercy Ships. Everyone welcome. Visitors come at 8pm.You can read about the work they do in the minutes of the 2016 Group meeting we recently forwarded to you as an attachment to the information from WI about this year’s Group Meeting as detailed below:

Group Meeting- Diptford Parish Hall- Speaker: Ann Widdecombe- Thursday 16th April. Open Meeting!!!!!!

Chairman’s Message Board. Denman Appeal for unwanted scarves. Please take freshly laundered ones to the Spring Council meeting to be sold off for this good cause, Dementia friendly committee- anyone interested? Contact [email protected] The DFWI resolution votes:27% of vote went to Plastic soup. Only 12% to FGM. Disappointing.See notice board for more details.

Treasurer: The Lloyds bank account is open and all money transferred from CAF bank. Signatories are Kathi, Cathy, Julie, “Patricia” and Anne. The £20 cheque for the quiz was presented too late so Kathi will write a new cheque from the Lloyds account. £2,367.82 on account. Expected expenses for the year: Insurance £50, speakers £320, WI fees £780, WI Newsletter £100+, hire of hall £220, Coins for Friendship £36 = £1,506.

NFWI News Coins for Friendship – We send a £1 per member donation. This is in aid of the ACWW. Kathi will write a cheque and send it off if members vote to continue with it. (It is something we have always done). Food Waste Campaign, NFWI, 19th – 21st May. We shall send off for the action pack.

DFWI News and Events

Spring Council meeting - Wednesday April 12th 2017. Speaker is/was a female Tornado fighter pilot. Clashes with DFWI trip to Denman, an example of good planning!. Closing 17 March. It should be really interesting and entertaining. WI fair at Ali Pally-29th 30th March- no-one going unfortunately. DFWI Denman Autumn Break- 29 Sept-1 Oct. Closing date 28 Feb but might accept late bookings if under subscribed. ACWW lunch in Barnstable- 10th May- closing date 21st April. See Table Good food Show- Birmingham- Thurs 15th/16th June closing date 31st March £145 sharing a twin room. See table Sing for fun- TeignValley- 27th April- £15 including lunch- - EX6 7NA – Closing date Thurs 13th April.

Heritage & Historic Houses of the Peak District & Cheshire, 22 May 2017, £399, 5 days- see table Sing for Fun: Teign Valley, Thursday 27th April, £15 including lunch, Christow EX6 7NA. Closing 12th April. See table ACWW Lunch in Barnstable: 10th May, closing 21st April. See table Springtime in your garden: Monday 24th April from 11.00am, Longdown (about 40 minute drive), £10 members, £12 non-members. Open Meeting, but must apply for tickets. Closing 10th April Sign up and bring cheque books to this meeting please to help our treasurer out. Food, Craft and Skills. Cathy has typed up slips to take away detailing the Courses for 2017 so that people can book for themselves. Please note that there are two evening sessions: ‘Gardeners’ Question Time’ and ‘A Crab Evening’ which might also appeal to members.

Ashprington WI Forthcoming Events: Powderham Castle garden show 28th April-12 people so far can take more. Bob the Bus booked.

 March walk to Huccaby Woods, led by Jill. Postponed from 3 to 10 March. Start & lunch at Forest Inn, Hexworthy (PL20 6SD). Dogs must be on a lead. Also visit to & talk about St Raphael’s Chapel.  Bird-watching and walk at Topsham on Tuesday 14 March. Dep 10.30am, early lunch (sandwiches?). Low tide 13.20pm Bring binoculars.  April walk- Durnsford Woods to see the daffodils(we hope!) Fri 7 April. Pam Macey to lead. See table for details of these walks and to sign up.
