Rosh Chodesh and the Transformation of Ritual A GREAT JEWISH BOOKS TEACHER WORKSHOP RESOURCE KIT Teachers’ Guide This guide accompanies resources that can be found at: http://teachgreatjewishbooks.org/resource-kits/rosh-chodesh-and- transformation-ritual. Introduction Rosh Chodesh means “head of the month,” and refers to the minor Jewish holiday that occurs at the beginning of each new month in the Hebrew calendar. The ancient Rabbis interpreted the Biblical verses Exodus 12:1-12:2 as requiring that the new month be determined by eyewitness testimony. Just as God showed Moses and the high priest Aaron the new moon, witnesses were supposed to testify before the judges of the Sanhedrin, the Great Court in Jerusalem, that they had seen the new moon. The officiants at the Holy Temple would then mark the occasion with a sacrifice, feasting, and fanfare. After the destruction of the Second Temple, this eyewitness procedure was replaced by astronomical and mathematical calculations that were used to determine when each month began. Bonfires were lit on the mountains between Jerusalem and Babylonia to announce the arrival of the new moon. In later years, as witnesses and messengers were replaced with a fixed calendar, few Rosh Chodesh rituals remained, although it continued to be marked liturgically by the birkat ha-chodesh (or, in Ashkenazic pronunciation, birkas hakhoydesh), the blessing of the month, which is recited on the Saturday before each new month begins. Because of associations between women and the moon, Rosh Chodesh has long been considered a special holiday for women. This association was taken up by Jewish feminists in the 1970s as they innovated to create Jewish rituals that affirmed women’s strength and created empowering female community within Jewish ritual life. -

Touching the Memory By William Eaton Zeteo is Reading, September 2014 My father usually invited an oirech (a poor person) from among those who had lined up at the door of the Beit HaMidrash to join us for [a Sabbath] meal. These were itinerant beggars, of whom there were, unfortunately, many in Poland. I was fascinated by these vagabonds who lived at the margin of our society, and their presence at our table added excitement and mystery to the celebration. This from a memoir by the former rabbi and director of Harvard-Radcliffe Hillel, Ben-Zion Gold. In the Introduction, Gold says that he wrote this memoir, The Life of Jews in Poland before the Holocaust, to rectify an “imbalance in the way we remember the Jews of Europe.” That is, we focus on the Holocaust and ignore how Jews lived, the “vitality and richness of Jewish life” in Europe before the most deadly wave of anti-Semitism—and of mass murder of people of many backgrounds. (See, please, Timothy Snyder’s Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin, and I would also here recommend Tzvetan Todorov’s La Conquête de l’Amérique: La question de l’autre — The Conquest of America: The Question of the Other — which speaks powerfully of human savagery on our side of the Atlantic.) That said, I must also note that Gold’s memoir came most to life for me in its antepenultimate chapter, which tells how he, unlike his parents and three sisters, escaped: avoided being murdered by the Germans. Reading this chapter I was reminded of how my William Eaton is the Editor of Zeteo. -

Wisse Kelly Scott Johnson Sholem Schwarzbard: Biography of a Jewish Assassin Abstract The thesis represents the first complete academic biography of a Jewish clockmaker, warrior poet and Anarchist named Sholem Schwarzbard. Schwarzbard's experience was both typical and unique for a Jewish man of his era. It included four immigrations, two revolutions, numerous pogroms, a world war and, far less commonly, an assassination. The latter gained him fleeting international fame in 1926, when he killed the Ukrainian nationalist leader Symon Petliura in Paris in retribution for pogroms perpetrated during the Russian Civil War (1917-20). After a contentious trial, a French jury was sufficiently convinced both of Schwarzbard's sincerity as an avenger, and of Petliura's responsibility for the actions of his armies, to acquit him on all counts. Mostly forgotten by the rest of the world, the assassin has remained a divisive figure in Jewish-Ukrainian relations, leading to distorted and reductive descriptions his life. -

From my grandfather’s stories I expected to meet someone with the profile of a vulture, with fleshy lips, the lower lip heavily protrud- ing like a Negro’s, deep-set watery eyes, eyelids less open than those of other races, wavy or curly hair, ears sticking out ... Instead, the man I met had a monkish appearance, a fine gray beard and thick bushy eyebrows with those Mephistophelean tufts at each corner that I had seen among Russians and Poles. Religious conversion evidently transforms not just the soul but also facial appearances.”1 Thus, in his novel “The Prague Cemetery,” a fictional story of the emergence of “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion,” the most influential antisemitic text of the twentieth century, Umberto Eco describes Yakov Brafman, the “grandfather” of “The Protocols.”2 Yakov Brafman (1824–1879) – a Russian Jew from Minsk province, who at the age of 30 converted to Protestant Christianity and – a few years later – to Russian Orthodox Christianity, started his career as a pioneering photo- grapher in Minsk. Later, he entered the government service, starting as a Biblical Hebrew instructor at the Minsk Orthodox Ecclesiastical Academy and eventually reaching the position of censor of Polish and Jewish litera- ture in St. Petersburg. Both his followers and opponents doubted Brafman’s traditional Jewish learning, while his obvious lack of general education was not even a question. -

Built in the 17th century, the synagogue was named after Rabbi Shmuel Eliezer Eidels (1555 – 1631), author of the work Hidushei Maharsha. In 1795 the Jews of Ostrog escaped death by hiding in the synagogue during a military attack. A Haven from Persecution YIVO’s dedication to the study of the history of Jews in Poland reflects the importance of Polish Jewry in the Jewish world over a period of one thou- sand years, from medieval times until the 20th century. In early medieval Europe, Jewish communities flourished across a wide swath of Europe, from the Mediterranean lands and the Iberian Peninsu- la to France, England and Germany. But beginning with the first crusade in 1096 and continuing through the 15th century, the center of Jewish life steadily moved eastward to escape persecutions, massacres, and expulsions. A wave of forced expulsions brought an end to the Jewish presence in West- ern Europe for long periods of time. In their quest to find safe haven from persecutions, Jews began to settle in Poland, Lithuania, Bohemia, and parts of Ukraine, and were able to form new communities there during the 12th through 14th centuries. -

Provincial ghetto in a lens of Gentile photographers Lucia Morawska RIASA Richmond University in London (RIAUL) 219 Priestley Hall Leeds, LS6 3QS, United Kingdom E-mail: [email protected] Abstract: This paper focuses on the collection of some pre-war pictures and Holocaust photographs from a provincial Polish town. Located in two photographic studios hundreds of pictures spanning several decades supply the token presence of discontinued life and coexisting communities: Jewish and Gentile. The Jewish past of the town just like that of many other Eastern European shtetls is often presented separately from that of other local communities. This creates the notion of ‘theirs’ and ‘ours’, with the latter extenuated by the absence of one of the parties. The pictures reflect everyday life, not as separated by cultural, religious or language variants but very much an intertwined. The likeness of people captured on a photographic film is one of the few pieces of proof that they existed, a silent reminder but also, a form of witnessing. The photographs can also be seen as a meeting space. This paper, therefore, will look at how visual evidence allows us to track traces of people, places and objects that are no longer there addressed from a perspective of a photographer, the witness and participant of the dreadful events. It will also ask the question of how the latter can helps us to ‘materialise’ memory, understand the past through visualisations and make us secondary witnesses.
