Documents in the Firkovich Collection: Valuable Sources on the History of the Jewish Communities in Europe and the Middle East from the 12Th to the 19Th Century
Karaite Archives 2 (2014), pp. 201–220 Documents in the Firkovich Collection: Valuable Sources on the History of the Jewish Communities in Europe and the Middle East from the 12th to the 19th century Olga Vasilyeva National Library of Russia Abstract The paper1 presents a survey of the manuscript collections of Abraham Firkovich, and, in particular, of the handwritten documents it contains in Hebrew, Arabic, West- Russian and other languages. These historical documents belonged to the Karaite (mostly of Lithuania), Rabbanite and Samaritan communities, and reflect their life in Europe and the Middle East from the 12th to the 19th century. These historical sources were included in different library funds and described in several inventory hand- lists; some archival materials have been presented in printed catalogues, and many items have been published and translated into European languages. In the paper, a brief survey of the documents is given, as well as the history of their acquisition by Firkovich and the history of their cataloguing and research over the past 150 years. Keywords Abraham Firkovich, Karaites, documental sources, Troki. The manuscript collection of Abraham Firkovich (1787–1874),2 which is housed in the National Library of Russia in St. Petersburg, numbers 20,395 items, mostly codices and fragments along with a number of documents. I was asked to expand a bit on how I know that R. Barukh Epstein’s story with Rayna Batya is contrived. In this story we see her great love of Torah study and her difficulty in accepting a woman’s role in Judaism. Certainly, she must have been a very special woman, and I assume that she was, for a woman, quite learned. When Mekor Barukh was published there were still plenty of people alive who had known her and it would have been impossible to entirely fabricate her personality. The same can be said about Epstein’s report of the Netziv reading newspapers on Shabbat. This is not the sort of thing that could be made up. Let’s not forget that the Netziv’s widow, son (R. Meir Bar-Ilan) and many other family members and close students were alive, and Epstein knew that they would not have permitted any improper portrayal. It is when recording private conversations that one must always be wary of what Epstein reports. A good deal has been written about the Rayna Batya story, and Dr. Don Seeman has referred to it as “the only record which has been preserved of a woman’s daily interactions with her male interlocutor over several months.”[15] When challenged about the historical accuracy of Epstein’s recollections, Seeman replied “that there is no evidence to indicate that R. -

From my grandfather’s stories I expected to meet someone with the profile of a vulture, with fleshy lips, the lower lip heavily protrud- ing like a Negro’s, deep-set watery eyes, eyelids less open than those of other races, wavy or curly hair, ears sticking out ... Instead, the man I met had a monkish appearance, a fine gray beard and thick bushy eyebrows with those Mephistophelean tufts at each corner that I had seen among Russians and Poles. Religious conversion evidently transforms not just the soul but also facial appearances.”1 Thus, in his novel “The Prague Cemetery,” a fictional story of the emergence of “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion,” the most influential antisemitic text of the twentieth century, Umberto Eco describes Yakov Brafman, the “grandfather” of “The Protocols.”2 Yakov Brafman (1824–1879) – a Russian Jew from Minsk province, who at the age of 30 converted to Protestant Christianity and – a few years later – to Russian Orthodox Christianity, started his career as a pioneering photo- grapher in Minsk. Later, he entered the government service, starting as a Biblical Hebrew instructor at the Minsk Orthodox Ecclesiastical Academy and eventually reaching the position of censor of Polish and Jewish litera- ture in St. Petersburg. Both his followers and opponents doubted Brafman’s traditional Jewish learning, while his obvious lack of general education was not even a question. -

Early in October 2004 I received an E-mail from Mike Ross in Perth, W.A., that he had found some Amdur descendants in Canada that might be related to me. I immediately made contact with Lorraine Bennington in Vancouver and, after a torrid exchange of information, established our relationship – we were, indeed, second cousins. This journey was not made any easier by the fact that there were two brothers who went under the same name – Nathan – so it took some time to establish that there were, indeed, three brothers and two sisters. A little later on, Lorraine‟s mother led us to Boaz Leviant in Israel and he was able to supply a wealth of information about his grandmother, Leah Ben-Gefen (nee Amdur). However we still have almost no information of the other sister, Hannah. who went to Brazil. Special thanks must go to Lorraine‟s mother, Pauline Aronson (nee Amdur), who at 92 has been a fountain of knowledge and a major source of information to help put the puzzle into perspective. -

THE FIRKOVICH ODESSA COLLECTION: THE HISTORY OF ITS ACQUISITION AND RESEARCH, PRESENT CONDITION AND HISTORICAL VALUE Olga Vasilyeva The Odessa Collection is a complex of Old Hebrew manuscripts, not very numerous, discovered by Abraham Firkovich (1787-18'14) in the course of his expeditions to the Crimea and the Caucasus in lE39-40. Some additional discov- eries were made by him in the following years, until 1852. Firkovich transferred these manuscripts to the Odessa Society of History and Antiquities, where they were kept till 1863, when on the orders of Alexander II they were taken to the lmperial Public Library, the National Library of Russia of today. There they were added to the main part of the so-called First Firkovich Collection, which the Library had acquired a year before.l The main aim of the expedition of lE39 was to find as much information as possible about the history of the Karaites. On January 3l (February 12) the Governor of Tavria, M. M. Muromtsev, wrote a letter to the Karaite Spiritual Consistory where, on behalf of the Govemor-General of the Novorossiysk region, M. S. Vorontsov, he put the following questions: the origin of the Karaites, the time when they settled in the Crimea, the time of and reasons for their separation from the Rabbanites and the differences between these two branches of Judaism, historical documents confirming the antiquity of their faith. Only written sources, namely, manuscripts that had been kept for centuries among the Crimean Jews and epitaphs, could answer these questions. Thus, a special expedition was organised. -

Adams Introduction Unlike common practice in halakhic Judaism in modern times, waiting six hours between the consumption of meat and the consumption of dairy was not customary in early, post-Talmudic centuries. The Babylonian geonim merely rinsed their mouths after eating meat and transitioned to dairy right away. It was only in the eleventh century that halakhic authorities imposed a multi-hour waiting period after eating meat. A careful analysis reveals that these changes in rabbinic law parallel reverse developments in Karaite law, suggesting anti-sectarian intent formed the base for the amendments in halakha. No rinsing or waiting was required by the Talmud, geonim, or rishonim between the eating of poultry and dairy until Maimonides required it in his Mishneh Torah . At approximately the same time, Ashkenazi Jews began refraining from eating dairy after poultry in one meal. Possible local non-Jewish cultural influences, as well as anti-sectarianism, will be considered as potential motivations for these changes in the halakhic attitude towards poultry. This paper will argue that the waiting periods common today between meats and dairy are not of Talmudic origin, but rather evolved in the Middle Ages and continued to develop late into the 14 th century.
