Studied without interruption for a milennium and a half, it is surprising just how significant an eftèct the invention of printing, a relatively late occurrence, had upon the Talmud. The ramifications of Gutenberg's invention are well known. One of the consequences not foreseen by the early practitioners of the "Holy Work" and commonly associated with the Industrial Revolution, was the introduction of standardization. The spread of printing meant that distinct scribal styles became generic fonts, erratic spellngs became uni- form and sequential numbering of pages became standard. The first printed books (incunabula) were typeset copies of manu- scripts, lacking pagination and often not uniform. As a result, incunabu- la share many characteristics with manuscripts, such as leaving a blank space for the first letter or word to be embellshed with an ornamental woodcut, a colophon at the end of the work rather than a title page, and the use of signatures but no pagination.2 The Gutenberg Bibles, for example, were printed with blank spaces to be completed by calligra- phers, accounting for the varying appearance of the surviving Bibles. Jewish fortunes improved with the granting of a variety of legal privileges culminating in full Roman citizenship for Jews. The enjoyment of these privileges and the peace which Jewry enjoyed in the Roman Empire were·· interrupted only by the invasions by the barbarians in the West 10 and the instability and economic decline they caused throughout the empire, and by the Parthian incursions against Roman Mishnah: The New Scripture territories in the East. The latter years of Roman rule, in the aftermath of the Bar Kokhba Revolt and on the verge of the Christianization of the empire, were extremely fertile ones for the development of . Karaite Archives 2 (2014), pp. 201–220 Documents in the Firkovich Collection: Valuable Sources on the History of the Jewish Communities in Europe and the Middle East from the 12th to the 19th century Olga Vasilyeva National Library of Russia Abstract The paper1 presents a survey of the manuscript collections of Abraham Firkovich, and, in particular, of the handwritten documents it contains in Hebrew, Arabic, West- Russian and other languages. These historical documents belonged to the Karaite (mostly of Lithuania), Rabbanite and Samaritan communities, and reflect their life in Europe and the Middle East from the 12th to the 19th century. These historical sources were included in different library funds and described in several inventory hand- lists; some archival materials have been presented in printed catalogues, and many items have been published and translated into European languages. In the paper, a brief survey of the documents is given, as well as the history of their acquisition by Firkovich and the history of their cataloguing and research over the past 150 years. One of the important topics is the permissibility of Chilul Shabbos in order to prevent someone from losing his sight. In this essay, we will discuss a number of the considerations of the Poskim. Chaza”l considered diseases of the eyes and eye injuries extremely serious. The Gemara in Avoda Zara 28b discusses this in some detail: R’ Zutra bar Tuvia said in the name of Rav: One may apply ointment to an “Ayin sheMarda”1 on Shabbos. [Those in attendance] thought that this is only true if the herbs [from which the ointment is prepared] were already crushed on the previous day [and therefore there would only be an Issur d’Rabbanan of Refua], but to crush them on Shabbos or to carry them [to bring them to the patient] through a Reshus haRabim [which are Issurim d’Oraisa] would not be permissible. [The reason they thought this was that the person was only in danger of losing his eyesight, not his life – Rashi]. One of the Rabbis, R’ Yaakov was his name, said to them – The ruling of R’ Yehuda was explained to me: It is even permissible to crush the herbs on Shabbos or carry them in a Reshus haRabim [as it is considered a matter of Pikuach Nefesh].
