3 SETTING

The First Bondson is set in a pre-Noahic (Genesis 6) flood world. The entire universe is reimagined in a fantasy setting that fills in the gaps of the Biblical narrative with the fictional world of Nod. It is filled with dinosaurs, nephilim, different races, and the epic struggle of good versus evil.

God, El in the Old Testament, is reimagined as Ol in The Waveschool Chronicles. Some of Ol’s dragons (angels - an allusion to the book of Revelation), fall from grace and mix with mankind to produce draka. Draka are dragon-like creatures roughly the size of an elephant and can be ridden and domesticated like a horse.

Many of the stories and themes of scripture resonate throughout the series. The main character Avortovar Maligtonay, is an amalgamation of many Old Testament prophets and heroes. He is a small shepherd boy (David-like), who rises from his meager birthright to become the greatest warrior (Gideon-like/Samson-like) in all of Nod. His heroics change the face of the world forever.

PASSION BEHIND WORK

As a pastor who has worked with over 1000 students and children over the past few years, Cyle became frustrated at the lack of non-portal, non-time travel Christian fantasy. So he set out to create a world rooted in the Old Testament and investigate many of the concepts, characters, and stories of scripture through a new venue and amalgamated characters.

The Bible contains the greatest stories of all time, and his goal was to include elements from the entirety of God’s word that engage the hearts and minds of my readers. The reimagined high fantasy setting contains a plethora of biblically inspired stories ranging from dinosaurs to dragons, magic to miracles, and warriors to wrongdoers.

Each waveson must compete in a series of scored challenges to determine their rank for the “choosing”. A few of the boys attempt to dissuade Avo and force him out of the waveschool. Avo persists and places last just behind his archenemy, Perci Feldrake.

During the choosing, each waveson, in turn, selects a draka egg that will hatch into a powerful draka. Avortovar believes his egg to contain a lifeless draka. To his surprise, and everyone else’s, it hatches hours later and he receives the rarest most powerful draka of all, a thunder draka.

7 SYNOPSIS

Avortovar Maligtonay, a sixteen-year-old draka rider, has finally arrived at the verge of attaining his lifelong dream—to become one of the great draka riders of the Northern Reaches. He rides, Meeta, a golden thunder draka, the smaller offspring of the great ancient dragons of Ol.

The First Bondson begins with Avortovar visualizing the waveschool’s training course run while seated on the banks of Greenbriar Creek. He is interrupted by a young boy and his father who owns the land. Avortovar introduces himself and allows the pair to touch Meeta. In appreciation of the gesture, Master Greenbriar offers Avo respite any time he needs to get away. Avo promptly departs to chase the training course record of ninety-eight sil. To claim the record would be an astounding feat on his thunder draka. He longs for his family to see him beat the record. Avortovar promised he would visit often, but in four years he hadn’t been home once. The guilt from his broken promise derides those thoughts.

Avortovar, commonly referred to by his friends as Avo, notices his best friends Jessup and Sanka in the crowd. Sanka, an older waveson and resident playboy, is lost in flirtation with the young ladies of the court. He finds Jessup staring at Nydia Feldrake. Nydia is Avo’s secret girlfriend, and she is the daughter of Avo’s greatest enemy, the Lord Regent Feldrake.

The elder Feldrake and his son, Perci have long been adversaries of Avo’s. Four years prior, Perci mistakenly chose the last of two eggs in the waveschool’s choosing ceremony. Perci received the weakest of the draka, a mud, and Avo received the rare and powerful thunder.

In an awe-inspiring run, Avo decimates the record. As he awaits a glorious celebration, alarm bells ring throughout the capitol city of Durban. The Bogrin army, an ogre-like horde riding giant tyrasors, have invaded the Eastfold, Avo’s home region. Jessup, Sanka, and Avo meet to devise a plan to gather more information. They decide Sanka and Avo will visit Sanka’s cousin, the wing-rider Gessel’s wife Iolba, to learn more. They will have to sneak out after dark to avoid the guards.

The two boys sneak out and Jessup stays behind to help them get back into the school. The boys meet the half-olf Iolba and play with her children. Iolba reveals that the Eastfold is burning. The boys become distraught with the news that Sanka’s home town is most likely in ashes.

They leave and return to the school. When they climb back in, Perci cuts their rope, thwarting any assistance Jessup can provide from inside. The boys have to recruit the help of a friendly guard, Lars Poder.

The boys enter the compound and threaten Perci. They decide to take a vote on leaving the waveschool to check on their families. Leaving the waveschool could result in expulsion and the loss of their draka mounts forever. With a unanimous vote, all three will leave. Sanka and Avo vote to go, but Jessup votes to stay, because his family is most likely not in the direct path of the attack.

The boys go to bed, but during the night Sanka leaves anyway. Avo follows soon after, intent to find his friend. When Jessup learns the news, he also leaves, but not before sending word to the schoolmaster in an attempt to save himself from expulsion later.

8 The boys race to catch each other. Sanka, unaware of the pursuit, comes upon a farmhouse under attack by Bogrin scouts. He engages the enemy—with his soul draka—in an attempt to save the family. Sanka’s draka doesn’t survive. It is ripped apart by the attacking Bogrin tyrasor riders.

Avo comes upon the battle late and watches in horror as Sanka is hunted down and killed by the Bogrin. He engages with his draka, Meeta. They easily dispatch the first few Bogrin but are unaware of an aerial counterattack.

Jessup arrives and assists in the battle as Avo is severely wounded. After dispatching his pursuers, Avo spends the night in a cave with his draka.

Jessup gets separated from Avo in the darkness and returns to the farmhouse. He stays all night to protect the family.

In a weary state of shock, Avo cuts a piece of skin from his wounded draka. He uses the the skin graft as a makeshift bandage to cover his shredded forearm. The draka graft adheres to Avo’s skin, becoming part of his flesh and healing his wound.

When he wakes from his sleep, Avo hears a voice.

He searches everywhere, only to learn the voice belongs to his draka Meeta, who reveals that he has a different name, Pia’ ka’. The skin graft provides a telepathic bond to the highly intellectual creature.

After learning that he can telepathically speak to his draka, Avo decides to keep it a secret, even from Jessup. He returns to the farmhouse, where he finds Jessup. An elite group of wing-riders known as The Soul Swords arrive. The Soul Swords take the young boys under their wings until it is safe for them to return to the capitol. They escort the two wavesons and the smallest of the farmer’s children back to the city of Hiffendale. When the farmer never shows, the children are placed in an orphanage. Avo forms a special connection with one of the orphans, Elice. He takes care of her like she is his own sister.

In Hiffendale, the commander of the Soul Swords institutes training for the two boys. They quickly become adept with the weapons given to them by the Swords. Avo trains by day and visits Elice as often as he can at night. One evening, Avo discovers terrible neglect and abuse by the orphanage Marm toward the children. When he physically confronts her, she reports him to the authorities, and they attempt to arrest him. Commander Knopp orders Avo to stay in the city keep, where the city watch has no jurisdiction.

The next morning, Lord Regent Feldrake arrives in the middle of a surprise attack. He tries to check on the progress of the war, but instead his troops are routed. Jessup attempts to rescue him but is knocked unconscious. Avo saves the Lord by killing his Bogrin attackers and then rescues Elice from the corrupt orphanage. Afterwards, he departs with Elice for his family’s homestead south of the city in Coldcreek.

The Lord Regent refuses to give the credit of his rescue to Avo and instead gives it to Jessup. They return to the capitol together. As the boys travel, war wages north of Hiffendale.

9 Meanwhile, Avo delivers Elice to his family in Coldcreek. He spends the night catching up at home. The family welcomes Elice with open arms. They are very proud of their son.

The next day, Avo returns to Hiffendale. On his way to the capitol, he runs into Johan, one of the Lord Regent’s personal guards. Johan had participated in the battle and was to report their victory to the capitol. They ride together and Johan becomes Avo’s friend.

Johan revealed that he witnessed Avo’s heroism when he saved the Lord Regent. He also shares with Avo that a blood draka rider gave information to the Bogrin about how to defeat the North Wing Army. Avo wonders if it was The Lord Regent, but keeps those thoughts to himself.

Back at the capitol, Avo arrives in time to witness Jessup hailed as hero for the rescue of the Lord Regent. Jessup is made a hold lord and Feldrake betroths him to his daughter, Nydia.

Avo feels betrayed. Through his journeys, he realized that family is most important thing. He’d became a great draka warrior, but he still missed his family. One day he could create his own family—with Nydia.

In a daring late-night rendezvous, at a masquerade dance, Avo and Nydia attempt to run away. As they attempt to escape, guards find them. Avo flees alone and Nydia is captured. The next day he discovers he is allowed to stay in the school, on probation. When news breaks that he snuck out for the dance, he is expelled as a consistent rule breaker.

He sends a note to Nydia before he leaves the capitol, and Pia’ ka’ is given to Perci. Through their telepathy, Pia’ ka’ and Avo plan to meet up at the remote Greenbriar Creek. It was the only place to avoid detection, and the location from which they’d devise a plan for Avo to reunite with Nydia.

He hasn’t seen them since he left four the waveschool four years earlier. In secret, he carries out a relationship with Nydia, his long time adversary’s younger sister. JESSUP SMITH: a sixteen-cycle old waveson born of modest means. His dark black hair stands in stark contrast to the golden blonde of his best friend and fellow waveson, Avortovar. Jessup’s wirey frame makes him a natural at sword combat. He holds the title of first swordson in his waveclass, and an outspoken admiration for the beautiful Nydia Feldrake. SANKA BAKER: is on the verge of graduating the waveschool. His husky frame has not deterred the seventeen-cycle old waveson from a lifestyle of dancing and flirting with all the nobles’ daughters. Sanka wants more out of life than the warfare afforded by the title of waverider. He desires a life of prestige in the court. NYDIA FELDRAKE: the striking beauty with long red hair, green eyes, and freckled skin. Her secret romance with Avortovar has gone unnoticed by even their closest friends. She longs for her family to end their hatred of Avo and embrace his ability as a draka rider and waveson. The wealth of her family provides for an otherwise carefree life of a noble’s daughter. PERCI FELDRAKE: the long time-adversary of Avortovar. Perci is not a fan of Avo’s success. His father, the Lord Regent, rules the Kingdom of the Northern Reaches. His father encourages him to make Avo’s life difficult in an attempt to humiliate the boy. Perci harbors a bitterness all the way back from their “choosing” day when Perci incorrectly chose the weakest draka and Avo received the grandest. MEETA/ PIA’ KA’: Avo’s golden thunder draka is one of the fastest draka to ever fly the skies of Nod. The four-cycle old draka is maturing at a rapid rate and his scales are hardening quickly. The adept flier and offspring of the drakakim—alpha draka—shows signs of great intelligence and fighting ability. THE WAVESCHOOL: the site of all draka rider training in the Northern Reaches. Promising twelve-cycle old boys from all corners of the kingdom are removed from their families and trained as great draka riders and protectors of mankind. The demands of the waveschool limit a child’s interaction with their family and many boys long for home. It is an honor to be chosen, and any boy who leaves the school faces expulsion and becomes an outcast in society.

12 COMPETITIVE WORKS

Eragon by Christopher Paolini (2005, Knopf Books for Young Readers) Over 35 million copies sold. sales rank #7,800. Eragon continues to sell well. Eragon brought the personal connection between a boy and his dragon to the forefront of many imaginations. The First Bondson exhibits that same unique closeness between a boy and his draka, but it differs on its reliance on magic.Magic is prevalent in Eragon, but highly uncommon in The First Bondson. My novel deals with the inherent tensions and passion of a sixteen-year-old, friendship, dating, family, and finding a place in the world. The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien (1937 reissued 2012, Del Rey) Over 100 million copies sold. Amazon current sales rank #72,383. The Hobbit is one of the greatest fantasy books of all time. It is timeless. It engages new readers to the genre, but also limits those new readers because of the difficulty of connecting with an antiquated language. Readers who become enthralled with fantasy require more outlets, more immersive worlds which they can devote their imaginations too. The First Bondson, reimagines many of the familiar staples of the fantasy genre and pulls readers into the high tension struggle of a teenager trying to find love and his place in the world. The Pirate by R.A. Salvatore (2009, wizards of the Coast) Over 30 million books sold in this 13+ book series. Current Amazon sales rank #101,000. R.A. Salvatore is one of the best –selling authors in modern fantasy. His books are amazing but they are skewed to the Dungeons and Dragons audience. The books are high on magic, sorcery, and demons, which can be off putting to many readers, especially parents selecting books for their child. I believe my book can find success when pared with books like The Pirate King, because it offers and low magic fantasy that steers away from demons and focuses more on the relationships between the characters in the book as they journey through life, war, and romance together. The Rise of the Wyrm Lord by Wayne Thomas Batson (2013 2nd edition, Thomas Nelson) Over 250,00 copies sold of the trilogy. Current amazon rank #347,200. This successful book is probably the most directly competitive book to The First Bondson. The Rise of the Wrym Lord is a portal, where modern day persons are pulled into a fantasy realm through a portal. The First Bondosn differs because it is a fantasy book set on an alternate version of historical Earth. The characters co-exist in their own time and place. Readers can fully immerse in the high fantasy world bound by familiar animals, plants, and physics. Raising Dragons by Bryan Davis (2004 5th edition. Living Ink books) Current Amazon sales rank #45,800. Best selling four book series. Raising dragons is another portal fantasy. The First Bondson is able to completely flesh out the high fantasy realm in which the story exists and draws the reader into the exiting adventures of Avortovar and his friends. My book covers difficult issue like suicide, dating, war, bullying, and family.
