will you finish your dissertation?“ During the last two years where I lived the usual, isolated life of analyzing data and writing up, many people have been involved and their names could fill pages. I would like to thank everyone who sat through the many beer-drinking sessions where I discussed ideas, got excited, thought of giving up, complained about my life as a Ph.D. student and about writing the dissertation. Their contribution has been invaluable because they kept me sane through this process. There are institutions and people who were involved in a more direct manner and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them. First of all, this project would not have started without a scholarship from the Danish Social Science Research Council. Special thanks to those grant-reviewers who believed in my project. I hope they will like the result. A special thanks to Danish Refugee Council who granted me free access to their newspaper archive on immigrants and

  • Denmark Has a New Government Nordea Research, 30 June 2015
Helge J. Pedersen Denmark has a new government Nordea Research, 30 June 2015 Denmark has a new government with Lars Løkke Rasmussen of the Liberal Party as prime minister. After more than a week of negotiations between the Liberal Party and the other parties of the centre-right bloc, the Danish People’s Party, Liberal Alliance and the Conservative Party, it was clear that the parties were too far apart to form a broad coalition. Denmark is now led by a pure Liberal Party minority government comprising 17 ministries. Minority governments are by no means unusual. In fact most governments in Denmark have been minority governments. A one-party government is not uncommon either. But what is unusual is the fact that this is a pure Liberal Party government. The last time this happened was under the premiership of Poul Hartling (1973-75). It is also unusual that the prime minister is from the country’s third-largest party. The last time this happened was with the coalition comprising the Liberal Party, the Conservative Party and the Social Liberal Party (1968-71), when Hilmar Baunsgaard of the Social Liberals held the post as prime minister. Obviously, given the political realities, the new government must work with different partners among the parties in the new parliament to implement its policies. In this light it is no surprise that the new government has presented a broad platform (“Together for the future”). According to this, the new government’s key priorities can be summarised as follows: • More private sector jobs through a sound and responsible economic policy supporting growth and prosperity.

  • Denmark 2019 Human Rights Report
DENMARK 2019 HUMAN RIGHTS REPORT EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Kingdom of Denmark is a constitutional monarchy with democratic, parliamentary rule. Queen Margrethe II is head of state. A prime minister, usually the leader of the largest party of a multiparty coalition, is head of government and presides over the cabinet, which is accountable to a unicameral parliament (Folketing). The kingdom includes Greenland and the Faroe Islands, which are autonomous with similar political structures and legal rights. They manage most of their domestic affairs, while the central Danish government is responsible for constitutional matters, citizenship, monetary and currency matters, foreign relations, and defense and security policy. Observers deemed national elections on June 5 free and fair. On June 27, the center-left Social Democratic Party formed a single-party minority government headed by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. The National Police maintain internal security and, jointly with the Danish Immigration Service, is responsible for border enforcement at the country’s ports of entry. The Ministry of Justice oversees both services. The Armed Forces report to the Ministry of Defense and have responsibility for external security in addition to some domestic security responsibilities, such as disaster response and maritime sovereignty enforcement. The Home Guard, a volunteer militia under the Ministry of Defense but without constabulary powers, assists the National Police in conducting border checks. Civilian authorities maintained effective control over the National Police, the Danish Immigration Service, and the Armed Forces, and the government has effective mechanisms to investigate and punish abuse. There were no reports of significant human rights abuses. The government took steps to identify, investigate, prosecute, and punish officials who committed human rights abuses.

The Political Elites’ Discourse of Right-Wing Populist Parties in Denmark and Sweden Written by Mia Lund Bekke Denise Helt Persson Development & International Relations Dissertation Supervisor: Wolfgang Zank Aalborg University, 2015 Page 1 of 99 Preface The dissertation finishes our master degree in Development and International Relations with the headline “The Political Elites’ Discourse of Right-Wing Populist Parties in Denmark and Sweden”. The dissertation has been carried out as a comparative study of Denmark and Sweden, focusing on the mainstream parties' acceptance of right-wing populist parties in each country. It is examined by a discourse analysis based on Laclau and Mouffe's discourse theory supplemented by Fairclough's concept ‘order of discourse’. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our supervisor Wolfgang Zank for his educational inputs and dedication. Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 rnsse F 686 X c2I ABSTRACT The public sector of all western developed countries has become increasingly involved in financing health care during the past century. Today, thirteen OECD countries have passed landmark legislative reforms that call for compulsory prepayment and universal entitlement to comprehensive services, while most of the others achieve similar coverage through a mixture of public and private voluntary arrangements. This study carried out a detailed analysis of why, how and to what effect governments became involved in health care financing in eight of these countries. During the early phase of this evolution, reliance on direct out-of-pocket payment and an unregulated market mechanism for the financing, production and delivery of health care led to many unsatisfactory outcomes in the allocation of scarce resources, redistribution of the financial burden of illness and stabilisation of health care activities.

  • Mimicking News How the Credibility of an Established Tabloid Is Used When Disseminating Racism
NORDICOM REVIEW Mimicking News How the credibility of an established tabloid is used when disseminating racism Johan FarkasI & Christina NeumayerII I School of Arts and Communication, Malmö University, Sweden II Digital Design Department, IT University of Copenhagen, Denmark Abstract This article explores the mimicking of tabloid news as a form of covert racism, relying on the credibility of an established tabloid newspaper. The qualitative case study focuses on a digital platform for letters to the editor, operated without editorial curation pre-publication from 2010 to 2018 by one of Denmark’s largest newspapers, Ekstra Bladet. A discourse analysis of the 50 most shared letters to the editor on Facebook shows that nativist, far- right actors used the platform to disseminate fear-mongering discourses and xenophobic conspiracy theories, disguised as professional news and referred to as articles. These pro- cesses took place at the borderline of true and false as well as racist and civil discourse. At this borderline, a lack of supervision and moderation coupled with the openness and visual design of the platform facilitated new forms of covert racism between journalism and user-generated content. Keywords: racism, letters to the editor, borderline discourse, digital journalism, fake news Introduction Publish your own text on the biggest news website. The People’s Voice is for people who are passionate about a cause – and want to say their piece. (Ekstra Bladet, 2016)1 This quote was placed on the front page of The People’s Voice [Folkets Røst], an online platform operated by the Danish tabloid newspaper Ekstra Bladet from 2010 to 2018.
