1 KRISTENSEN, Thorkil, Danish politician, third Secretary-General of the Organization for European Economic Cooperation (OEEC) 1960-1961 and first Secretary-General of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) 1961-1969, was born 9 October 1899 in Fløjstrup, close to Vejle, Denmark, and passed away 26 June 1989 in Birkerød, Denmark. He was the son of Niels Kristensen, farmer, and Anne Kirstine Thorkilsen, farmer. On 17 July 1931 he married Ellen Christine Nielsen, teacher. They had one daughter and one son. Source: OECD Paris Sound recordings: http://lccn.loc.gov/92788675 Kristensen was born the second of three children in a farming family in rural Jutland in Denmark and went to school in Veijle and Odense. While his family was quite well off in his early childhood, his parents were forced to sell the farm in 1907 and lost much money due to the inflation of the 1920s. His parents had close ties to the liberal-conservative party Venstre (literally: Left, in the sense of Liberal), the traditional Danish farmers’ party. Kristensen became a member of Venstre’s youth organization in 1918. For several years he worked as a bookkeeper, but, unlike his parents, he decided to continue his education at the age of 21, for which he first needed to successfully complete his secondary school exam. With the exam achieved in 1922, he went on to obtain a degree in Political Science and Economics at the University of Copenhagen in 1927. He then taught at a business school in Aarhus, but due to the continuation of childhood hearing problems he had to give up his desired occupation.

THERE is a passage in one of the Frankish annals which has not received the attentionwhich it deserves, and which I believe throws a great deal of light on the historyof the Danish revolutionsof the early part of the ninth century. This chronicle was writtenin verse by a Low Saxon monk some time during the reign of Arnulph, who died in 899.

  • Denmark Has a New Government Nordea Research, 30 June 2015
Helge J. Pedersen Denmark has a new government Nordea Research, 30 June 2015 Denmark has a new government with Lars Løkke Rasmussen of the Liberal Party as prime minister. After more than a week of negotiations between the Liberal Party and the other parties of the centre-right bloc, the Danish People’s Party, Liberal Alliance and the Conservative Party, it was clear that the parties were too far apart to form a broad coalition. Denmark is now led by a pure Liberal Party minority government comprising 17 ministries. Minority governments are by no means unusual. In fact most governments in Denmark have been minority governments. A one-party government is not uncommon either. But what is unusual is the fact that this is a pure Liberal Party government. The last time this happened was under the premiership of Poul Hartling (1973-75). It is also unusual that the prime minister is from the country’s third-largest party. The last time this happened was with the coalition comprising the Liberal Party, the Conservative Party and the Social Liberal Party (1968-71), when Hilmar Baunsgaard of the Social Liberals held the post as prime minister. Obviously, given the political realities, the new government must work with different partners among the parties in the new parliament to implement its policies. In this light it is no surprise that the new government has presented a broad platform (“Together for the future”). According to this, the new government’s key priorities can be summarised as follows: • More private sector jobs through a sound and responsible economic policy supporting growth and prosperity.

  • Doing Their Own Thing Stockholm During the 1970S Squatting Movements in Copenhagen and Stockholm During the 1970S
Social Movements in the Nordic Countries since 1900 89 Natasha Vall links: Natasha Vall rechts: Squatting Movements in Copenhagen and Doing their own Thing Stockholm during the 1970s Squatting Movements in Copenhagen and Stockholm during the 1970s Abstract This article offers a comparative assessment of squatting and urban occupation in two Nordic cities, focussing upon the much profiled example of Christiania in Copenhagen and the lesser moment of squatter agitation in southern Stockholm during the 1970s. Firstly it examines the two cases against a backdrop of crises in the Nordic welfare state, and especially its housing model. Secondly the article places the experience of Chris- tiania and Stockholm within the context of both the 1960s counterculture, as well as the community activism of the 1970s. Finally the comparison of Christiania Free Town in Copenhagen and the quarter Mullvaden in Stockholm emphasises the importance of creative practices to squatting and community activism during the 1970s. This theme has often formed the background of traditional studies of the political struggles mobilised by squats. However, the following discussion reveals that creative activists often played a significant role in forging international networks that carried the ambitions of alternative living beyond their local contexts. During the 1970s grass roots movements emerged in European cities whose protagonists occupied and squatted vacant and forgotten buildings. City spaces in flux, abandoned or awaiting redevelopment by municipal governments distracted by their preoccupa- tion with the newly emerging problem of suburban anomie, were rich pickings for a youth movement that gave expression to a sense of urban dislocation symptomatic of the transition to post-industrial society.

Under konferencen var Prag ved at kvæles af en hedebølge med temperaturer op over 40 grader. • The Hostages of the Northmen: from the Viking Age to the Middle Ages
Part IV: Legal Rights It has previously been mentioned how hostages as rituals during peace processes – which in the sources may be described with an ambivalence, or ambiguity – and how people could be used as social capital in different conflicts. It is therefore important to understand how the persons who became hostages were vauled and how their new collective – the new household – responded to its new members and what was crucial for his or her status and participation in the new setting. All this may be related to the legal rights and special privileges, such as the right to wear coat of arms, weapons, or other status symbols. Personal rights could be regu- lated by agreements: oral, written, or even implied. Rights could also be related to the nature of the agreement itself, what kind of peace process the hostage occurred in and the type of hostage. But being a hostage also meant that a person was subjected to restric- tions on freedom and mobility. What did such situations meant for the hostage-taking party? What were their privileges and obli- gations? To answer these questions, a point of departure will be Kosto’s definition of hostages in continental and Mediterranean cultures around during the period 400–1400, when hostages were a form of security for the behaviour of other people. Hostages and law The hostage had its special role in legal contexts that could be related to the discussion in the introduction of the relationship between religion and law. The views on this subject are divided How to cite this book chapter: Olsson, S.
