(I Reis 03:05-14) RESUMO Esta dissertação analisa o contexto de transição dos séculos XII-XIII na Dinamarca, em particular sua atuação no Báltico Oriental, na Estônia, Livônia e Curlândia, nas chamadas Cruzadas setentrionais, baseado nas interpretações e contruções de Saxo Grammaticus. Este, por sua vez, foi clérigo danês que escreveu no mesmo período. Sua obra, chamada posteriormente Gesta Danorum, tornou-se história oficial e de referência na Dinamarca pelos séculos posteriores. Escrita inicialmente por encomenda do Arcebispo Absalão, consta de dezesseis livros, e divide-se tradicionalmente em duas partes chamadas arbitrariamente chamadas de “mítica” (livros I-IX) e “histórica” (livros X-XVI), sendo que a maioria das opiniões aponta que a segunda parte teria sido escrita antes que a primeira. Duas temáticas diferentes foram instrumentais em tal análise, a saber, o esquema das quatro virtudes cardinais, estudado pioneiramente na Gesta Danorum por Kurt Johanesson, e a Temática do Conselheiro, detectada primordialmente no estudo das passagens selecionadas acerca das regiões do Báltico Oriental. As Virtudes Cardinais propiciaram os valores primordiais e estruturais; a temática do conselheiro contemplou o núcleo narrativo principal, inserindo tanto os valores anteriores quanto concepções políticas e as idéias fundamentais de Saxo; ela significa basicamente que não é suficiente ao rei ser forte; ele necessita também ser sábio, e ter um homem sábio para guiá-lo. Este obviamente representa o Arcebispado. As conclusões do entrelaçamento das temáticas com o contexto de escrita apontam para a defesa na obra de concepções hierocráticas, mesmo nos livros míticos, onde há ausência da Cristandade nos eventos narrados. Aponta também a defesa de um projeto de hegemonia danesa no contexto Báltico, sob tutela e conselho do arcebispado, e fundamentado nos movimentos de Cruzada na região Báltica. Tal movimento é apresentado, por fim, como aglutinador do imaginário acerca de um passado glorioso, ao projeto de glória e hegemonia no presente de escrita; presta-se também como canalizador de tensões e contradições externas, em processo paralelo ao fortalecimento das instituições monárquica e da Igreja danesa. ABSTRACT This dissertation analyzes the transition context of the centuries XII-XIII in Denmark, particularly its actuation in Eastern Baltic, Estonia, Livonia and Kurland, in the called “Northern Crusades”, and based in interpretations and constructions of Saxo Grammaticus. This, by his time, was a Danish clerk that wrote in the same period. Their workmanship, called posteriorly Gesta Danorum, became official and referential history in Denmark for several centuries after. Initially wrote under commission of Archbishop Absolom, it has sixteen books divided traditionally in two parts, arbitrarily called ‘mythic’ (books I-IX) and ‘historical’ (books X-XVI), but the most opinions agrees that the second part was wrote before the first one. Two different thematics were instrumental in such analysis; the scheme of the Four Cardinal Virtues, studied first in Gesta Danorum by Kurt Johanesson, and the Thematic of the Counselor, detected primarily in this study of selected parts concerning Eastern Baltic. Cardinal Virtues provided referential and structural values; Thematic of the Counselor covers a principal narrative kernel, inserting since the previously mentioned values as politic conceptions and fundamental ideas in Saxo; it means basically that it is not sufficient to the king to be strong; he needs to be wise, and have a wise man to guide him. This wise man obviously represents the Archbishopric. Conclusions obtained from the interweaving with the write context points to defense of hierocratical conceptions, even in the mythical books, where there is absence of Christianity in the narrated events. Points too to the defense of a Danish hegemonic project in the Baltic, under guidance or Archbishopric, grounded in crusade movements on Baltic region. Such movements are presented as agglutinative of the imaginary about glorious past with the projects of glory and hegemony in the present of the write process; serves too to canalize internal tensions and contradictions, in parallel process to strengthening of the monarchic institutions and the Danish Church.     Saxo and his younger cousin a study in the principles used to make Gesta Danorum into Compendium Saxonis Marko Vitas Supervisor: Arne Jönsson Centre for Language and Literature, Lund University MA in Language and Linguistics, Latin SPVR01 Language and Linguistics: Degree Project – Master's (First Year) Thesis, 15 credits January 2017 Abstract Saxo and his younger cousin a study in the principles used to make Gesta Danorum into Compendium Saxonis The aim of this study is to offer as detailed analysis as possible of the Compendium Saxonis, a late medieval abridgement of the famous historical work Gesta Danorum, written towards the end of the XII century by Saxo Grammaticus. Books I–IV and XVI have been used for this purpose. The study contains an introduction, two chapters and a conclusion. In the introduction, scarce information known about life of Saxo Grammaticus, author of the original work, is summarized and briefly discussed. Further on, general information about Compendium and its dating are referred to. Second part of the introduction deals with the theoretical background concerning ancient and medieval abridged version. In this discussion, we rely on Paul Grice’s Theory of Communication and its reinterpretation by Markus Dubischar. In the First chapter, called Treatment of the content of Gesta Danorum in the Compendium Saxonis we analyse the way the author of the shorter version dealt with the content of the original. Particular attention is payed to the abridgment’s treatment of four distinct episode types frequent in the original. These are episodes pertaining to the supernatural, episodes pertaining to the moral and didactical issues, episodes pertaining to the upbringing, legal activity and death of a Danish king and episodes pertaining to war and destruction.

Already at the beginning of the Christian era the name Germans was applied by the Romans and Gauls to the many clans of people whose main habitation was the extensive territory east of the Rhine, and north of the forest-clad Hercynian Mountains. That these clans constituted one race was evident to the Romans, for they all had a striking similarity in type of body; moreover, a closer acquaintance revealed that their numerous dialects were all variations of the same parent language, and finally, they resembled each other in customs, traditions, and religion. The characteristic features of the physical type of the Germans were light hair, blue eyes, light complexion, and tallness of stature as compared with the Romans. Even the saga-men, from whom the Roman historian Tacitus gathered the facts for his Germania—an invaluable work for the history of civilisation— knew that in the so-called Svevian Sea, north of the German continent, lay another important part of Germany, inhabited by Sviones, a people divided into several clans. Their kinsmen on the continent described them as rich in weapons and fleets, and in warriors on land and sea (Tac.,Germ., 44). This northern sea-girt portion of Germany is called Scandinavia—Scandeia by other writers of the Roman Empire; and there can be no doubt that this name referred to the peninsula which, as far back as historical monuments can be found, has been inhabited by the ancestors of the Swedes and the Norwegians.

The human race, or at least the Germanic race, springs, according to the myth, from a single pair, and has accordingly had a center from which their descendants have spread over that world which was embraced by the Germanic horizon. The story of the creation of this pair has its root in a myth of ancient Indo-European origin, according to which the first parents were plants before they became human beings. The Iranian version of the story is preserved in Bundahishn, chap. 15.1 There it is stated that the first human pair grew at the time of the autumnal equinox in the form of a rheum ribes2 with a single stalk. After the lapse of fifteen years, the bush had put forth fifteen leaves. The man and woman who developed in and with it were closely united, forming one body, so that it could not be seen which one was the man and which one the woman, and they held their hands close to their ears. Nothing revealed whether the splendor of Ahura Mazda - that is to say, the soul - was yet in them or not. Then said Ahura Mazda to Mashia (the man) and to Mashiana (the woman): "Be human beings; become the parents of the world!" And from being plants, they got the form of human beings, and Ahura Mazda urged them to think good thoughts, speak good words, and do good deeds.
