Modern Slavery and Climate Change
SCIE IA NT EM IA D R A V C M A S O A I C C I I A F I L T I V N M O P MODERN SLAVERY AND CLIMATE CHANGE: THE COMMITMENT OF THE CITIES 21 JULY 2015 NEW SYNOD HALL VATICAN CITY Modern Slavery and Climate Change: The Commitment of the Cities #MayorsCare Esclavitud moderna y cambio climático: el compromiso de las ciudades Introducción oy día afrontamos dos urgencias dramáticas que, en cierto modo, están relacionadas: la crisis del cambio climático y las nuevas formas de esclavitud. -

Copenhagen Business School, July 2008 Advisor: Susanne Gram Larsen By Ditte Roslyng Tastesen © Ditte Roslyng Tastesen 2008 Acknowledgements When first starting this project in Sicily, I experienced many obstacles, and doubted that I would succeed in completing this project. However, later in the process I was met with the kindness, which Sicilians are known for. Therefore, I would like to thank all of my interview people – they will be named later in the thesis – for taking their time and sharing so honestly their experiences and knowledge with me. Without them, this thesis would not have been possible. Particularly, I would like to thank Salvatore Costantino from University of Palermo for his guidance during my stay in Palermo. I would like to extend my thank you to other people that have crossed my way in Sicily, their openness and willingness to share have been of great use for a complete picture of the situation in Sicily. I would also like to thank Thomas Harder for his guidance in the beginning of the research process, and especially in connection with the mafia. Finally, I would like to thank Susanne Gram Larsen for guiding and encouraging me throughout the process. Her professionalism, knowledge and personal support have been invaluable and have helped me produce a project that I am proud of. The Power of Images in the Age of Mussolini Abstract The year 1937 marked the bimillenary of the birth of Augustus. With characteristic pomp and vigor, Benito Mussolini undertook numerous initiatives keyed to the occasion, including the opening of the Mostra Augustea della Romanità , the restoration of the Ara Pacis , and the reconstruction of Piazza Augusto Imperatore. New excavation campaigns were inaugurated at Augustan sites throughout the peninsula, while the state issued a series of commemorative stamps and medallions focused on ancient Rome. In the same year, Mussolini inaugurated an impressive square named Forum Imperii, situated within the Foro Mussolini - known today as the Foro Italico, in celebration of the first anniversary of his Ethiopian conquest. The Forum Imperii's decorative program included large-scale black and white figural mosaics flanked by rows of marble blocks; each of these featured inscriptions boasting about key events in the regime's history. This work examines the iconography of the Forum Imperii's mosaic decorative program and situates these visual statements into a broader discourse that encompasses the panorama of images that circulated in abundance throughout Italy and its colonies. -

The intensity of this revolutionary intellectual activity started to wane at the beginning of the 1980s. The exhibition La Presenza del Passato curated by Paolo Portoghesi at the first Venice Biennale of Architecture held in 1980 and Manfredo Tafuri’s publication of the book Storia dell’architettura italiana 1944-1985, through different ideological assumptions, marked the inception of a structural crisis in architecture and opened new horizons for the discipline in Italy. In the last decade scholars have dedicated their studies to the recovery of Italian architectural history of the ‘’60s and ’70s. On the contrary, less attention has been paid to the development of Italian architecture in the following years.
