La prima sezione, curata da Francesco Gaetano Moiraghi, si concentra sull’analisi di Cosa nostra. La seconda sezione, che sposta il focus sulla ‘ndrangheta, è curata da Andrea Zolea. Come si potrà notare, le due sezioni non sono state realizzate secondo uno stesso modello, ma analizzano le due organizzazioni con un approccio differente. Ad esempio, la parte su Cosa nostra avrà un orientamento maggiormente diacronico, diversamente da quella sulla ‘ndrangheta, basata su un approccio sincronico. Il presente testo ha infatti l’obiettivo di offrire due proposte di analisi differenti che riescano a mettere in luce le analogie e le differenze delle strutture delle due organizzazioni mafiose.

LEOLUCA ORLANDO + SIMON PARKER LEOLUCA ORLANDO is the Mayor of Palermo and interview + essay the President of the Association of the Municipali- ties of Sicily. He was elected mayor for the fourth time in 2012 with 73% of the vote. His extensive and remarkable political career dates back to the late 1970s, and includes membership and a break PALERMO OPEN CITY, PART 1 from the Christian Democratic Party; the establish- ment of the Movement for Democracy La Rete (“The Network”); and election to the Sicilian Regional Parliament, the Italian National Parliament, as well as the European Parliament. Struggling against organized crime, reintroducing moral issues into Italian politics, and the creation of a democratic society have been at the center of Oralando’s many initiatives. He is currently campaigning for approaching migration as a matter of human rights within the European Union. Leoluca Orlando is also a Professor of Regional Public Law at the University of Palermo. He was the second prosecutor to meet that fate in two months; in May, another bomb had killed Giovanni Falcone. The assassinations made news around the world, and the second one made the Mafia a new enemy: Rita Borsellino, Paolo’s younger sister. Before her brother’s death she was a pharmacist. After it, she became a leading crusader against the Mafia’s longstanding, often ruthless grip on life in Sicily, where small businesses were routinely extorted for protection money and killings were commonplace. Ms. Borsellino was often frustrated over the years as she waged that fight. In 2006 she ran for governor of Sicily and lost to Salvatore Cuffaro, the incumbent, who had been linked to the Mafia and later went to prison. In 2009 at an anti‑Mafia march, she told Agence France‑Presse, “I am angry and less optimistic than 17 years ago, when my brother was slain.” Mafia influence remains a vexing problem in Sicily and elsewhere in Italy. Yet Ms. Borsellino, who died on Wednesday in Palermo at 73 after what Italian newspapers said was a long illness, lived to see some successes as well. Among others was that when Salvatore Riina, the head of Sicily’s notorious Cosa Nostra crime syndicate and the man who ordered the murders of the two prosecutors, died last year, he was serving 26 life sentences.
