Each year on July 4th, also known as Independence Day, Americans celebrate this historic event. NEWSLETTER: Conflict between the colonies and England was already a year old when the colonies convened a in in the summer of 1776. In a June 7 session in the State Cindy Meadows House (later ), of presented a resolution with the famous words: "Resolved: That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, cindymeadows62@ that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between gmail.com them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved."

Lee's words were the impetus for the drafting of a formal Declaration of Independence, although the resolution was not followed up on immediately. On , consideration of the resolution was postponed by a vote of seven colonies to five, with abstaining. However, a Committee of Five was appointed to draft a statement presenting to the world the colonies' case for independence. Members of the Committee included of , of , of Pennsylvania, Robert R. Livingston of New York and of Virginia. The task of drafting the actual document fell on Jefferson. On July 1, 1776, the Continental Congress reconvened, and on the following day, the Lee Resolution for independence was adopted by 12 of the 13 colonies, New York not voting. Discussions of Jefferson's Declaration of Independence resulted in some minor changes, but the spirit of the document was unchanged. The process of revision continued through all of July 3 and into the late afternoon of July 4, when the Declaration was officially adopted. Of the 13 colonies, nine voted in favor of the Declaration, two -- Pennsylvania and -- voted No, was undecided and New York abstained. , President of the Continental Congress, signed the Declaration of Independence. It is said that John Hancock's signed his name "with a great flourish" so England's "King George can read that without spectacles!"

Today, the original copy of the Declaration is housed in the National Archives in , D.C., and July 4 has been designated a national holiday to commemorate the day the United States laid down its claim to be a free and independent nation.

Community Players: Trivia! http://www.clar ksvilleplayers.we bs.com/ Born on the Fourth of July

Maybe two of the best-known Americans to be born on Independence Day were identical twins

whose professional careers remained oddly parallel. MALA WEBSITE: Esther Pauline "Eppie" Friedman took over the Chicago Sun-Times' nationally syndicated advice

http://merifieldac column in 1955 and for the next 47 years, was better known as "Ann Landers." She died in 2002 res.org/ at age 83.

Her twin sister, Pauline Esther Friedman — note the reversed names — was hired by the San

Francisco Chronicle in 1956 to write an advice column similar to her sister's. For the next 46

years, she was better known as "Dear Abby." She died in January 2013 at 94.

Your stars and stripes are made in China

In 2013, Americans imported $4 million worth of U.S. flags. $3.9 million of this — 98 percent — Clarksville Lake came from China. Country Chamber of Commerce: Bonus fact: The U.S. exported $781,222 worth of U.S. flags in 2013. The biggest customer: The clarksvilleva.org Dominican Republic, which bought $160,000 worth.

And your fireworks, too

Americans shoot off almost a pound of fireworks each year for every man, woman and child in the

country. This number has nearly doubled since 2000. It's increased by about ten since 1976.

About 96 percent of these fireworks — about $218 million in 2012, the most recent year for which

data is available — were imported from China.

In 2012, the U.S exported just $11.7 million of fireworks. Twenty-one percent of that went to

Israel. Clarksville 4th of July Parade

I will be riding in Bike a.org/Home.ht MS Historic New Bern with my team, Missing Spokes to raise money for the National MS ml Society. Last year I raised over $1500 about half of that came from Merifield residents--some of whom I don't even know. A big THANK YOU to all who supported me. I know begging for money makes me sound like an NPR fundraiser, unfortunately I don't have any coffee mugs or tote bags to give out, just thanks.
