Washington D.C. is Washingtonthe capital of the United States and wasD.C. founded after the Revolutionary War. The DC stands for the District of Columbia and is named after Christopher Columbus. Washington was named after the first President of the United States and Found- ing Father, George Washington. The city of Washington D.C. holds some of the most important political events in the world and is visited by more than 20 million tourists annually. The National Archives located in Wash- ington D.C. is home to thousands of some of the most important The White House documents in American History. Some of these include the Declara- tion of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. If you are in Washington D.C., you can view many famous monuments and historical sites like the Washington Monument, the White House, or the Capitol Building. You can find memorials dedicated to notable presidents such as Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, Franklin D. Roosevelt, or John F. Kennedy. Visit the Smithsonian museums, the Air and Space Museum, The Lincoln Memorial or and the National Zoo. You can also see the Library of Congress, the largest library in the world! The motto of Washington D.C. is, “Justitia Omnibus” which means “justice for all.” It has a diverse population and a growing economy. Around Washington D.C., you will see beautiful cherry blossom trees. In 1912, Japan sent over 3,000 cherry trees to the United States as a gift of friendship. Every spring, D.C. hosts the Cherry Blossom Festival that features cultural events and other events. The Washington Monument Many of the locations throughout National Treasure take place in or near Washington D.C. The group steals the Declaration of Independence in Washington D.C. One of the most important scenes in the movie takes place on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial when Ben discusses possibly going to jail for their plan to steal the Declaration of Independence.

Fun Fact: George Washington never lived in the White House. It was completed a year after he died. TheAfter a year ofDeclaration fighting during the American Revolutionary of Independence War, America’s thirteen colonies had had enough. They wanted independence (freedom) from Great Britain. They decided to create the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4th, 1776. This document announced that the United States would no longer be under Great Britain. It was one of the first steps America took to fight Great Britain. There are five parts of the Declaration of Independence. These include the Statement of Purpose, Statement of Rights of People, Statement of Government, List of Complaints, and final- ly, the Statement of Independence. Five men wrote the Declaration of Independence. This group was called the Committee of Five. These men were Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Robert Livingston, Roger Sherman, and Thomas Jefferson. Thomas Jefferson wrote the first draft of the document. Jefferson later became the third president of the United States. John Hancock, the President of Congress, was the first man to sign this special document. His signature is the biggest and is nearly five inches long! In total, fifty six men from all thirteen colonies signed the Declaration. The Declaration was adopted at Pennsylvania State House in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, which is now known as Independence Hall. After it was signed, it was sent to the king of England and all of the colonies. It was printed in newspapers and read aloud to the public. One of the most important statements in the document says, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Unlike National Treasure, there is no secret map on the back of this document. The only thing written on the back says, “Original Declaration of Independence dated 4th July 1776.” Today, we celebrate our freedom on July Fourth, which is known as Independence Day! People celebrate with parades, fireworks, barbecues, picnics, and other celebrations.

Did you know: John Adams (2nd US President) and Thomas Jefferson (3rd US President) were the only two men who signed the Declaration who later became United States Presidents. They both died on July 4, 1826.

3. Who is Silence Dogood? Silence Dogood was a pen name for Benjamin Franklin. He used the name to get published in his brother’s newspaper, the New-England Courant.

4. What’s on the back of the $100 bill? Like in the movie, the back of the $100 bill has Independence Hall and a clock. The bill’s clock says 4:10, but it has been debated to be 2:22. The $100 bill was later released and the time is 10:30.

5. What does the Liberty Bell have written on it? The Liberty Bell has Leviticus 25:10 written on it, which says, Benjamin Franklin “Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the Inhabitants thereof.” On the front of the bill has three lines: Pass and Stow / PhiladA and MDCCLIII. MDCCLIII is Roman numerals for 1753. John Pass and John Stow cast the bell.

6. Who invented Daylight Savings? New Zealand scientist George Hudson and British builder William Willett were the first to come up with the idea of Daylight Savings Time in 1895. Benjamin Franklin created a similar concept in 1784, so he’s often credited with the idea.

7. Where is Trinity Church? Trinity Church is on an intersection at Broadway and Wall Street in New York. There is no secret tunnel passageway there, since the underground has been turned into a subway system.
