Remediation of Le Letten waste disposal site

Project details Region: Alsace / France Client: HIM GmbH (On behalf of GIDRB) Involved parties: ARE Deutzen GmbH Construction period: 2011 Contract value: 4.5m EUR

Work completed • Pre-treatment of 35,000 tonnes of material at the soil treatment facility in Deutzen • Thermal treatment and subsequent disposal of a total of 35,000 tonnes of excavated material

Background The former Le Letten waste disposal site in Hagenthal le Bas in the Alsace region of France is around 300m from the Swiss border and Schönenbuch in the Canton Basle-Country. In the 1950s and 1960s, excavated materials, rubble and waste from the various industries were disposed of here.

HIM GmbH was contracted by GIDRB to remediate the former Le Letten waste disposal site. The main focus of the work was to remove the contaminated contents of the disposal site. The heterogeneous contents of the site were classified as “mixed layer“. An estimation of the amount of “mixed layer“ materials calculated there was around 20,600 m³ (approx. 35,000 t).

Preliminary testing determined that the “mixed layer“ material mostly consisted of polluted mineral materials (soil, construction and demolition waste), mixed with production waste from the chemical industry.

Depending on the level of contamination, the underlying alluvial soil had to be removed and disposed of as well. The amount of material from the waste disposal site and the surrounding areas was estimated to be around 3,000 m³ (approx. 5,100 t)

Remediation work HIM GmbH’s disposal concept envisioned decontaminating the “mixed layer“ material and the contaminated alluvial soil, depending on the level of pollution, at the thermal soil treatment facilities of ARE Deutzen GmbH in OT Deutzen/ , . The soil, excavated by a third party, was put into containers using a lock system and then transported for thermal treatment to the ARE Deutzen GmbH facilities near . The transportation of the material from the Le Letten waste disposal site to Deutzen was intermodal (road-rail-road) using gastight containers in accordance with acceptance limits. 35,000 tonnes of soil were delivered and pre-treated between 02/2011 and 10/2011 and this was disposed of by the end of 2011.
